Great Things Going On In Third Grade

We can not believe that this is the last week of school before Winter Break! The year has flown by! During the holiday season, it is a time to reflect and give thanks for all of our many blessings. We are so thankful to have each and every student in our third grade. We are so proud of each of our sweet third grade Bennett Bears. They have grown so much since the start of school and have displayed all of the characteristics we look for at Bennett: hard work, perseverance, trustworthiness, honesty, friendship, enthusiasm and dedication. We are truly thankful for each student and the wonderful smiles and great attitudes they bring with them each day. They make our Bennett family absolutely wonderful! Thank you for sharing your sweet angels with us everyday!

In Math this week, students will work on solving multi-step word problems. We will work on solving complex word problems using a variety of strategies such as skip counting on a number line, counting by tens, strip diagrams, and employing input/output tables.

In Reading students will continue to study dramas/plays. Students will learn the vocabulary associated with a drama and how to read a drama. Students will learn to determine the plot of a play and help use clue to find meanings in a play. Students will also work in small groups to perform a winter play in the class. In Writing, students will review the format of writing a friendly letter as they compose a letter to Santa.

This week in Science, students will finish their ELM over Magnets. Students will complete their DIY's and labs to learn about the properties and uses of magnets. Students will create a super hero suit for Benny the Bear that incorporates magnets in the suit.

Multiplication Facts

Over the holidays, we highly recommend that students continue to practice their multiplication facts. At this point in the year, all students should be finished, or nearing completion of mastering multiplication facts (0 - 12). We will be wrapping up our study of multiplication and division and moving on to other math concepts. We will be begin going deeper to solve complex, multi-step word problems. Word problems are always challenging for students. Students that do not have their facts, are really put at a disadvantage in math, when trying to solve word problems. We hate to see students struggle because they do not know their facts, and are able to solve a word problem because they are stuck trying to figure out what 5 X 3 equals. Please give your child the gift of spending time with them to help them learn their facts! There are lots of great ways to help a child succeed with math facts. We highly recommend you play games with your child over the holidays, such as SKUNK or Multiplication War! It is a great way to spend quality family time, while helping your child build their math knowledge. If your child is struggling with learning their facts, please contact your child's teacher. She will be happy to help provide you with materials, or ideas to help!
