PowerSchool:
Course selection for 2013-2014
It’s already time to select classes for next year. Students should keep their progress toward graduation, post-secondary educational plans, their interests, and their career goals in mind as they make their course selections.
Click on the Additional Features icon in PowerSchool to see Graduation Progress. It lists the total credit hours your student has completed toward the 46 credits needed for graduation. Specific graduation requirements are listed on the left side of the page. As your student completes each course, the number of credits earned is listed in blue next to the course name. The courses in which your student is currently enrolled are listed in the next column. They aren’t added to the total earned until grades are finalized at the end of the semester. When the student completes all the courses required, the graduation requirement is marked “Completed”. If the student earns additional credits in that requirement area, those credits are automatically counted in the Directed and Elective Credits area. Be sure to look at this screen before your student selects courses for the upcoming school year so they make choices that will keep them on the path toward graduation.
Hempstead students make next year’s course selections online. Detailed directions for online registration were given to Hempstead students through their 5th period class. They are also available from the Guidance Office and on our school website. Click on Students/Parents and you will find links to the 2013-2014 Course Guide and the instructions for completing selections online. Students can get a hard copy of the Course Guide in the Guidance Office. Review course descriptions carefully with your students so they make wise selections that will keep them progressing toward graduation.
Students should complete their course selections by February 18.

TOUR OF FRANCE
Message from Madame Lyon
TRAVEL TO GERMANY
Hempstead and Senior High Schools will be traveling to Germany in March 2014!! Sign up is right now. You get a $100 discount until Feb. 28, 2013, but you can sign up until Feb. 2014. The sooner the better! We will be gone March 13-23, 2014. This is over Spring Break and conferences, so the students will not miss any school. We will fly into Berlin, spending 2 days touring. In Berlin we will see the Brandenberg Gate, Check Point Charlie, and the Reichstag. Then we will take a charter bus to Dresden. Dresden was completely destroyed during WWII, then re-built into a beautiful German city. We will go to Nurnberg to see the castle ruins. Then off to Munich. In Munich we will travel to visit Schloss Neuschwanstein (Walt Disney Castle), view the Glockenspiel, take a bike tour through the city, as well as visit Dachau concentration camp (a very historical and important piece of history to remember). We will also visit the world’s largest Cuckoo Clock in the Black Forest. Then we will spend time in Lucerne, Switzerland before returning home. Please email Frau Olson (aolson@dbqschools.org) or Herr Blaser (bblaser@dbqschools.org) if you want more information. This is the chance of a lifetime to experience true German culture!

We Care Olympics
We Care Olympics Raises $432.00 for St. Mark's
In memory of the children and adults lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on Dec. 14, the Student Councils of Hempstead and Senior High Schools sponsored a "We Care Olympics" during the half-time of the boys' varsity inter-city match-up. Raffle tickets were sold, with the lucky winners becoming the half-time entertainment. Students participated in musical chairs, three-point shooting, hula hooping, and a three-legged race. Each student also won a Little Joe Pizza from Happy Joe's. With the sale of tickets, the Mad Money Dash, and a donation by the Hempstead Booster Club, a total of $432.00 was raised for St. Mark's Community Center. The money will be used to support the reading program. A letter was sent to Newtown, CT, informing the citizens of the community of our support in their time of need.
Booster Club Bunny Hop
Please support the Hempstead Booster Club by participating in the Bunny Hop 5K Race/Walk on Saturday, March 23, 2013. The race begins at Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School at 8:30 AM. All proceeds will benefit academics, activities, and athletics at Hempstead. Cost of the event is $10.00. T-shirts are an additional $10.00. Easter hams, donated by our sponsor Hy-Vee, are awarded to each age division winner. Door prizes are drawn during the race for easy pick-up. Last year 305 people participated, so join the fun and help us help your student! Register on-line from the Hempstead Booster Club website or call Wanda in the Activities Office at 552-5233. To volunteer, contact Peggy Dolson at pdolson@dbqschools.org.
