6th Grade Weekly Update
5/11 - 5/15
We will challenge you weekly to complete a positive mindset activity and share it with us if you would like. You can share yours through email, our Google Classrooms, or through Barry/Platte County District websites/Facebook/Instagram (email Helen Riley at rileyh@platteco.k12.mo.us or publicrelations@platteco.k12.mo.us).
We just want to connect, share the love, and be optimistic during this time of separation.
Week 8 Positive Mindset Challenge
Self-Care Bingo
Practicing mindfulness is incredibly empowering for children. It can help them better manage stress and anxiety when it does occur. It helps with self-regulation, promotes positive emotions and self-compassion. One way to promote mindfulness is taking care of the self (more popularly known as self-care).
Most of the time, we just forget. Self-care is nothing like an urgent item on your to-do list. When your agenda is all filled up with assignments and deadlines, and chores, self-care has no chance to live.
Here is a way to practice self-care while having a little fun too:
Meditate! (start with a 10-minute session and observe the change in your focus and inner peace)
Take a warm bath! (it is the go-to way to relax to release some nasty toxins in our body and you can bubble or essential oils to promote certain moods as well)
Keep a journal!
Dance! (follow a tutorial on YouTube or just freestyle)
Stretch! (relieve the tight muscles of your neck, your back and your legs)
Do yoga! (focus on poses that center your mind and body - mostly importantly - pay attention to your breathing)
Help someone! (acts of kindness go a long way)
Eat chocolate! (dark chocolate is best)
Take a nap! (stop rushing through your to-do list and take time to recharge when you feel tired)
Go for a walk! (nature has a magical calming power - take a long walk in the park or by the lake)
Listen to soothing music!
Crafting! (embrace your creativity and make something useful from scratch)
Declutter your space! (make room for your body and soul - the more cluttered a space is, probably so is your mind)
Massage! (gently massage on the stiff area of your body before going to sleep)
Cook for yourself! (enjoy the process of meal-prepping and cooking for no one else but you - stay safe, and if needed have some supervision!)
Hug a loved one! (physical contact will bring a sense of comfort and will keep you two closer)
Read a short novel! (allow your mind to have a break from real life and flow as the story goes)
Buy yourself flowers! (because you are the one that deserves your love the most)
Do a brain dump! (list all the things that you should dump from your mind - for our brain to function properly, it’s a must to keep it free from hazards)
Celebrate small achievements! (Learn something new today? Complete a 3k? Buy yourself a gift or treat yourself when small improvements are made - treat yo'self!)
Make a quote list! (keep a list of quotes that inspire you or make you laugh - when you have a bad day, read the quotes and it may help to brighten up your mood)
Watch a random talk! (a TED talk or anything motivational or informative - take it as a dose of inspiration)
Call an old friend! (or send a text message to reconnect)
Drink a cup of green tea! (feel free to switch to any hot drink - lemon water, hot chocolate, coffee, etc.)
That’s why we’ve created this printable self-care bingo game with a list of basic self-care ideas. Print it out and try to get a bingo or better yet a blackout!
We’ve also created a blank template so you can create your own bingo if these activities aren't to your taste.
Share your bingos and blackouts with us! We would love to see you all working on your self-care!
Student Reminders
- Please check AND read your emails coming from your teachers/their Google Classrooms, administration, and the district to stay updated on daily information. If you do have questions, feel free to contact your teachers through email! We would be happy to respond and clarify things. There will NOT be daily emails sent by one of your teachers anymore. I am just going to send the Learning Menus to students at the beginning of next week. The expectation is that you check Google Classrooms for daily updates.
- We recommend that you read your emails to create a "To-Do List" for each day. Tackle one class at a time while taking frequent breaks in-between. Don't try to do everything at once and limit yourself to 30 minutes per class.
- Next week will just consist of only one fun activity each day hosted by a 6th Grade teacher. Since I will be sending out the Learning Menu on Monday, I will also be hosting the first fun activity.
- DO NOT WORRY ABOUT MAKING ACTIVITIES UP! Focus on what is expected during that day only. If you miss a day, you miss a day. It's okay.
- The last day of online learning will be May 22nd.
