Growing Up

That Was Then, This is Now

Facts and Theme

"Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional." - Chili Davis

- This quote explains that you get old physically but you mature mentally. Bryon shows that he matures when he is done dealing with Mark and ends up calling the cops.

"Growing up happens when you start having things you look back on and wish you could change." - Clary Fray

- I think this quote explains how Bryon starts feeling bad about Charlie's death and other things he has done in the past.

"It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are." - E.E. Cummings

- Bryon starts to grow up and mature and make Mark realize what he has done and is doing no matter if they are friends or not.

- I think growing up is a big theme in the story especially towards the end when Bryon calls the cops and starts to regret things he has done. Now I feel that Bryon is mature and has grown up. Mark has stayed the same kid but Bryon is quickly growing away from his bestfriend.

My thoughts and synthesis

I think this book did a very good job of supporting themes, especially the theme of growing up. I thought Bryon and Mark would be best friends forever, Bryon ended up changing and was tired of what Mark was doing. I think that part in the story shows proof about how people grow apart. I agree with the author about growing up and how people change and grow apart.
