Week 31: Palm Sunday
It’s hard to believe that Sunday is Palm Sunday already. On that day over two thousand years ago, Jesus was preparing to enter Jerusalem. Usually, when He arrived in the Holy City, He would walk in just like everyone else. But Jesus knew His death was approaching, so His entry this time would be different. A few disciples were sent to fetch an animal for Him to ride. Not a mighty steed, like a conquering king would ride, but a young donkey to show He was coming in peace.
The word that Jesus was coming spread quickly through Jerusalem. The man who fed thousands, who healed the sick and lame, and who brought Lazarus back to life was on His way! As we picture the scene, Jesus is humbly riding a donkey as throngs of people fill the streets. People rushed to see this miracle worker. They stripped the date and palm trees of branches to wave high and lay on the road. Their garments were placed on the ground before Him. The waving palms symbolizing victory and triumph and their clothes on the road, an act of loyalty and submission to their king. Their shouts of “Hosanna” (save us) and praise to God, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord” filled the air. What a celebration!
The people were looking for a savior – someone to save them from the hated Romans. But Jesus was not who they expected Him to be. He was not here to topple a government, instead He came to save them, and us, from our sins. We remember the triumphal celebration of Palm Sunday knowing the sorrow and suffering that is coming on Good Friday.
If you are looking for a place to worship this Holy Week, I invite you to join us at Grace Lutheran. Palm Sunday services are at 8:00 and 10:45 am; Maundy Thursday worship is at 6:30 pm; Good Friday worship at 7:00 pm; and Easter Sunday services are at 8:00 and 10:45 am.
