May 12-18, 2019 is Food Allergy Awareness Week
Food allergies are serious and are a potentially life-threatening medical condition. About 1 in every 13 children has a food allergy - that's about 2 students in every U.S. classroom. Every 3 minutes, a food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency room. In the U.S., the eight most common food allergens are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, egg, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish. Food allergies are not the same as food intolerances and it is important to have your food allergy confirmed with an allergist. There is no cure for food allergies.
A food allergy may occur in response to any food, and some people are allergic to more than one food. Food allergies may start in childhood or as an adult. All food allergies have one thing in common: They are potentially serious. Always take food allergies—and the people who live with them—seriously.
Food allergy reactions can vary unpredictably from mild to severe. Mild food allergy reactions may involve only a few hives or minor abdominal pain, though some food allergy reactions progress to severe anaphylaxis with low blood pressure and loss of consciousness.
So, now that you have all of this information, what can you do to help?
- Always read food labels! Even if a food has been safely eaten in the past, ingredients can and do change.
- Prevent Food Allergy Reactions: Always use soap and water or wipes to clean hands after eating. Hand sanitizers do not remove food proteins.
- Never tease or harass someone who has allergies.
- Know that allergies are very serious.
- DON’T SHARE FOOD! You may not know if someone has a food allergy.
- BE SUPPORTIVE, SHOW KINDNESS, AND RESPECT OTHERS’ NEEDS.

Community resources and opportunities
SUMMER ENRICHMENT AT MANN SCHOOL: Mann Power Summer Session! Summer Bump Up. After conversations with other PTO presidents, we, the Mann PTO presidents Dot Roche and Aimée Eubanks Davis, decided with our community to open this program to students in other D97 schools. This summer program will offer advanced math and reading for students whose MAP test scores typically are between the 80th – 95th percentiles, and who with additional, small group instruction, may accelerate their command of challenging math and/or reading concepts. We are mirroring this after Julian's summer bump up in math.
Students who register must be driven personally and excited about this opportunity to grow and realize their full potential within. Homework is expected and at the end there will be an assessment to see how much of the content has been mastered. The advanced math and reading courses will run for three weeks from June 10 to June 24, Monday through Friday at Mann School. The cost will be $360.00 per course for all three weeks. Students who are doing both the morning and afternoon courses may stay for a supervised lunch, at no extra charge.
Math: 9:00 – 11:30 AM (Pick up at 11:30 AM, if student is not attending the afternoon
reading course.)Lunch and Recess Break: 11:30 AM – 12:25 PM (Please bring a peanut-free lunch and
water bottle.)Reading: 12:30 – 3:00 PM (Drop off at 12:25 PM, if student is not attending the
morning course.)
To enroll, create an account and sign up here via Class Track. When you see Instructor click on your D97 school (e.g., Holmes, Irving, Lincoln, etc.). If you need support, email Mann Power (MANN.POWER@LIVE.COM). We look forward to our children learning alongside and forming friendships with other students in D97!
