A weekly update from Carleton Middle School
Heart and Sole
Carleton is rolling out a girls' empowerment and running program through the YMCA called Heart and Sole. This program will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00-4:15. The cost is $110, and scholarships are available. The girls will receive 20 lessons, materials, snacks each week, a water bottle, cinch bag, t-shirt, medal, parent guide, and entry into the celebratory 5K at Lake St. Clair Metro Park on May 21st. See Mrs. Bennett or Mrs. Syswerda for details, or come to an informational meeting after school on Monday, March 13th at 3:00 in the media center.

Parents,
Last week Mr. Kausch and I met with all of our students by grade level to discuss the expectations as they get closer to moving forward a grade level and taking a bigger role as leaders in our school, as well as their homes, and their communities. During these conversations we stressed the importance of finishing the year strong and engaging in behaviors that help them achieve their goals of being successful adults. The 8th grade meeting also included a conversation about the 8th grade farewell, that is being planned by our Booster Club (who would love to see you at their next meeting on March 13th)
and is a privilege for 8th graders. I have attached the text of a memo that was sent home to be signed with our 8th graders. If you have not seen it, please know that this will be our policy for admitting students to the Farewell as we believe it is an earned privilege. The text is as follows:
The eighth grade year is going quickly. Our Booster Club has been working very hard at planning what just might be the best 8th grade Farewell Celebration yet. We here at Carleton would like to reward the deserving students with this special activity.
In order to participate in this event, the following guidelines have been set. Any student who meets two of these criteria will not be permitted to attend the 8th grade Farewell Celebration.
1. Student receives an in or out of school suspension beginning the week of February 27th. (Note: Each suspension counts as an occurrence; therefore, two suspensions will remove a student from the Farewell).
*Any student receiving a suspension that is equal to or greater than 5 total days of in or out of school suspension will not be permitted to attend the Farewell.
*Any student who is suspended on the day of the Farewell may not attend.
2. Students who are not passing the 8th grade. Earning a grade lower than a D- in 50% or more of all classes would be considered not passing.
3. Any student who receives 7 tardies in any one class, or 14 total tardies during the second semester
Cell Phones
On a separate note over the past two weeks I have had to address a few cell phone use issues. Please take some time to discuss your digital footprint with your son/daughter. At this age it is very difficult for students to grasp the permanent nature of their online communication. I'm a big fan of the shirt test for all online communication and ask my middle schooler "Would you be willing to wear what you wrote on your phone today, on a shirt tomorrow?" Thank you for your effort in working to address this challenging issue.
Good News
Our 8th grade band students earned straight Division I ratings from four separate judges last week at District XVI MSBOA Band and Orchestra Festival. This is the highest rating possible and with this rating it allows the Carleton Band to play with other middle schools at an upcoming State MSBOA Band and Orchestra Festival with even higher standards. Good luck at State and congratulations on a job well done!
Tomorrow at 2PM, Moe A., Carson L., Mark B., Akhil M., Mrs. Ciak, and her daughter Renee will all have their head's shaved in downtown Romeo (32 Mile Road and Van Dyke) to support St. Baldrick's Foundation and bring awareness and research dollars for childhood cancers. Thank you for being so brave and raising money for such a great cause. We hope to see some of our Carleton families there to support our students, student council, and Mrs. Ciak and her family.
