Assistant Principal's Message
Wow! It's the end of the school year already! And yes! Robert has entrusted me with not burning down the building...... check...√ AND writing the final message of the school year!!! WHAT WAS HE THINKING?! LOL....
Robert is thinking right now, "What was I thinking?"
It has definitely been an arduous and EPIC school year, but one that I am sure none of us will soon forget. We have faced many trials and tribulations together this year, many firsts and as we move into a new school year, our "new normal".
I count myself extremely blessed to work among each and every one of you. In my career, I have worked in several districts and at several school sites. Each one with its own challenges and highlights. However, Jefferson is a special place. It is filled with some of the most dedicated educators that I have ever had the privilege to work with. You work diligently to create relationships that matter with our students, relationships that matter with parents, relationships that matter with one another and this year RELATIONSHIPS mattered more than ever before! Students needed to know that they mattered, that you weren't going to give up on them and YOU - ALL - did this for them! You connected with your students and their families, you showed up for them in ways no one else could! Each of you were CHAMPIONS for your students.
I selected this video, even though I know we have all seen it a million times, and because I can always watch it a million times more.... because it truly defined for me what I believe to be our driving force at Jefferson.... RELATIONSHIPS. Rita Pierson says it best, "You were born to make a difference," and each of you do every single day. THANK YOU for all you do to connect with our students and to be champions for them!
Hope you all have a restful summer and time to connect with your families and loved ones.

Principal's Message
I found this open letter and video and thought of each of you. Thank YOU for all that you do.
Last spring, you made the shift from face-to-face teaching to pandemic pedagogy. In a matter of days, you found innovative solutions to huge challenges. You designed virtual lessons with limited time and resources. There was no roadmap or blueprint. It wasn’t perfect. There were some mistakes along the way. But you were there for your students. Every. Single. Day. You’ve proven that social distance doesn’t mean relational distance. Despite the roadblocks, you have built a classroom community on empathy and kindness where students engage in meaningful collaboration. You’ve done check-ins and partnered with families. You helped find resources for students who were struggling. You’ve experimented with new approaches and taken creative risks. You’ve continued to learn. You’re reading books, watching videos, listening to podcasts, and reading articles. You’re curating content and engaging in professional discussions. You’re crafting meaningful lessons that empower students with voice and choice, like that awesome scavenger hunt or the maker project or the blogging project or that choice menu or the game-based learning activity. 2020 has been hard. We’ve seen wildfires and natural disasters and an economic downturn. Oh and apparently murder hornets. Seriously. Murder hornets. Meanwhile, teaching is especially challenging right now. It can feel draining when you have a barrage of emails to answer or when you do a video conference and face a wall of black screens. Meanwhile, some of the social media comments about teachers have been downright toxic. But know this, you are impacting lives. Right now, there’s a student who feels known and heard because of you. There’s a student who is passionate about learning because of you. There are students who will remember you forever, as someone who was there for them in these dark times. You are changing the world, even when you can’t see it. So, thank you.

PLACEMENT DIRECTIONS AND FILES
Placement Guidelines: (June 9th)
Goal: At Jefferson School, we continue to work together to ensure our classes are leveled as best as possible into three categories- High, Medium and Low in Language Proficiency, Academic Levels and Behavior.
The following criteria will be used to make classes on June 9th:
ELA: H, M, L
Student Data: Star/Dibels/Literacy Assessment
Math: H, M, L
Behavior: O, S, N, U
Work Habits: O, S, N, U
Engagement: H, M, L
# of Attendance:
(more for lack of instructional access vs. chronic attendance patterns)
Teacher Comments: (we will format the box for wrap text, hoping for no glitches)
Directions of Creating Class
Spread out the low performing students
Friendly reminder to plan your class SPED students as LOWS, not add them on top of existing lows. This helps create a class with better overall balance.
Spread Out Behavior
Spread out “key parents”
Consider Speech students as IEP students.
This year more than any other year, expect to have a lot of low students. We want to make sure that we are clear. When we are giving our staff a guide to replace our Special Ed Students with a low student, we mean the very low students that are scoring or have very low scores in student data.
Other Balance to Consider:
Retention Candidates
Gender balance, where possible
# Boys
# Girls
Math Level
When all classes are complete at your grade level: (Please email Admin Team)
Dear Teachers,
Here is your grade level Scholastic Google Sheet. Please add the necessary data and or label needed for each of your students. Please do not delete. If something happens or is deleted, it will be deleted for all. Please keep your comments short and sweet. The office is working on adding the number of attendance for each student. Our Special Ed Teachers are working on labeling our Speech and SAI students. Thanks for your time and efforts. Your data is due by June 9th.

Summer School
The district has extended the deadline to apply. If you are interested please follow-up with Michele Lopez at the District Office.
We would like to offer Summer School to each grade level. As soon as I get the list of the staff that has applied, I will forward it to the staff.
Thanks for your consideration.
21-22 Staffing Update
We need to understand as a staff that placement of teachers is more fluid than ever and will continue to be moving forward due to declining enrollment and how it impacts our numbers and needs. We need to move staff where we feel the students will benefit the most and will continue to follow the contract as our guide. For some there might be a perception that if you are moved, it is a punitive measure. This is absolutely not the case.
I share this with the staff in advance, not to stress out any of our staff members, but rather to keep our staff members informed on the dynamics that are causing these coming shifts in the next several years.
Below is the Contract Language we are using for assignments:
Your preferences will be taken into consideration. However, your tentative assignment may change due to the uncertainty of student enrollment, reorganization, and budget. Your preferences will be taken into consideration. However, your tentative assignment may change due to the uncertainty of student enrollment, reorganization, and budget. And follow the Contract under 8.2 ASSIGNMENTS/REASSIGNMENTS. 8.2.1 All assignments and reassignments shall be made to serve the best interest of the District, school, and student population, and shall be subject to a final decision by the Superintendent. 8.2.2. Each unit member shall be given written notice, no later than six (6) working days prior to the end of the current school year of the following year's tentative assignment. Such assignments shall specify the school, grade level, or grade level combination, subject area, and room. Assignments shall be made through a fair and equitable process based on criteria, such as credentials, training and experience, bilingual needs and ability, the previous year's assignment, and teacher preference for school, grade level, subject area, team partners, and room. All other qualifications being equal as determined by the District, seniority will prevail.
Master Schedule Update
This year's complexities have given us a few curve balls.
1. We don't know what the district's plan will be for the fall, we are expecting an announcement in the coming weeks.
2. Our Special Ed Department may go from 3 teachers to 2 teachers. We need to create a master schedule that allows the team of 2 or 3 to co-teach with their designated Gen Ed Teachers during ELA and/or Math.
3. RTI may look different next year, we will have 2 teachers and having aides in their classroom and our Gen Ed Classrooms is essential to our staggered RTI Schedule.
4. PE may change next year, we have not received a final word on their schedule.
For these reasons, we wanted to inform our staff that we will work on the Master Schedule during the summer and you will have it at the beginning of the school year with an explanation and rationale for it's creation.
This next year will be a year for our school's team to really try to get back to our NEW Normal and this will take time for all of us to figure this out.
Thank You in Advance for your patience while we work on this process. Until then, we will continue to keep you updated.

Principal's Message:
We are full of joy welcoming back our students this week. The campus is once again full of sounds of laughter and excitement! This is our purpose! This is why we exist! This has not been an easy journey, however, we move forward with the joy and passion knowing that we are slowly going back to our new normal.
As we continue in our second week of in person and distance learning, I ask that we each take a moment to breath, reflect and appreciate that we each are an important piece of the Amazing Jefferson Elementary School Puzzle!
Thank you for all that you do!
21-22 Looking Forward to our Future!
Academic Focus for the 2021 and 2022 School Year!
In the 2021-2022 School Year, we will focus on three areas of support to close the learning gap, engage student learning and finally to provide our students continued support in regards to Social Emotional Learning (SEL).
The three areas are:
1) Teachers will be provided with the opportunity to integrate technology through both skills and practice into their daily instruction in multiple forms in order to engage and enrich student learning.
2) Staff will continue to be provided with Professional Development and Professional Growth Opportunities in the area of Social Emotional Learning.
3) Additionally, our staff will continue to identify students with learning gaps and provide students with tiered interventions during small group instruction.
These three areas of focus will provide differentiated instruction for student learning and also provide them with tiered and focused instruction that will give all our students access to more opportunities for learning with a variety of modalities at their level, therefore enabling them to grow as future leaders of the world.
Additionally, we are excited to announce that our very own Patty Varela was approved to be our new RTI Math Teacher! We are excited to have Ms. Varela and Ms. Martin help and support our Tier 3 students next year! Congratulations Patty!

Students Showing Symptoms or Need Medical Attention
Process to Follow if a student needs medical attention:
1. The teacher contacts the office and states that there is a student who has 1 or more symptoms or needs medical attention.
2. The staff informs the teacher to send the student to the quad area where one of the supervision aides will meet and greet the student and take them to one of the 2 isolation rooms. (Please see map above)
3. The Teacher needs to complete the Health Specialist Student Form provided to you by our Health Specialist.
4. The Health Specialist meets the student in the isolation room and provides the student with care.
5. If the student has been confirmed to have one of the symptoms, the health specialist calls the office to inform the parent that the child needs to be picked up.
6. Upon arrival of the parent, the health specialist informs the parents of the district's policy and informs the parent that the child may not return in less than 10 days, or may be given a Covid-19 test and the results are "negative". The child may not return until the child is fever free for 24hrs even with a negative test. In this case, the student did not have a fever, but rather a cough.
Students or Staff with COVID-19 Symptoms Send home students or staff immediately, place in the school site isolation room/area while awaiting pick up accordingly. Recommend COVID-Testing (cannot be mandated). School/classroom remain open. If the test is negative, students or staff may return after symptoms resolve. If the student or staff member does not test, they cannot return until ten days from symptom onset.
Information on the cleaning/disinfecting:
A cleaning and disinfecting schedule has been established in order to avoid both under-use and over-use of cleaning products. High touch/common areas (tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, elevator switches and buttons, touch screens, printers/copiers, grab bars, and handrails) are disinfected three times daily using appropriate products. The district has purchased various disinfectant machines that include foggers, misters, and foamers to be utilized both indoor and outdoor to sanitize frequently used surfaces and common spaces. Use of shared objects is eliminated wherever possible, for example, water fountains are shut down (refillable water bottle stations are provided as an alternative), high touch playground equipment may be taken out of use and replaced with no-touch playground games, etc. Staff utilize Super 60 (one-step, multi-purpose disinfectant and deodorizer cleaner) to sanitize all school areas. This is an EPA approved product. Custodial and other staff responsible for cleaning and disinfecting school surfaces and objects are trained on manufacturer’s directions, Cal/OSHA requirements for safe use and as required by the Healthy Schools Act, as applicable. Custodial staff and other staff responsible for cleaning and disinfecting are equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves, eye protection, respiratory protection and other appropriate protective equipment as required. All cleaning products are kept out of children’s reach and stored in a space with restricted access. Ventilation is maximized during cleaning and disinfecting to the extent feasible. If using air conditioning, use the setting that brings in fresh air. Replace and check air and other filters and filtration systems to ensure optimal air quality. Steps are taken to ensure that all water systems and sinks are safe to use after a prolonged facility shutdown to minimize the risk of Legionnaires’ disease diseases associated with water. Restrooms, lobbies, break rooms, and lounges and other common areas are being disinfected daily.

Olweus Student Survey
This is for 3rd through 8 grades students only:
Teachers as part of our district funding, we need all 3rd through 5th grade students to complete the survey below. We recommend that the teacher provide time to complete the survey on in person day in the afternoon after all your in person students have returned home in the afternoon. This way, you can ensure that all your students are logged in and can complete the survey.
1. Can we have a copy of the questions beforehand? You can view them two ways. They are listed in the instructions, enclosed or you can go to this website and use the following login information (it is case sensitive).
Username: eSampleSurvey
Password: Olweus
Student Survey Website: (please provide this link to your students)
https://www.obqsurvey.org/school.aspx?sid=3722AFAC-732D-48A0-824B-7345095F6C69
2. How do we know what student completed the questionnaire? Since we are using the URL option, instead of the individual user ID, we are not able to tell who took the survey. We only know the number of surveys completed. Therefore, I recommend that teachers assign the survey and allow them the time to complete the survey. It can take between 20 - 40 minutes to complete the survey.

Principal's Message:
This week marks a special day as we start a week of WELCOMING our students back. I consider this week our soft opening for the fall when we come back in what we hope is a traditional school year.

I am giddy with pride and grateful to each of you for the amount of work you have taken to make our Reopening Magical!
The Preparation for next week's opening reminds me of the work we did to open the new campus in 2015. Below is the caption and remarks that were given on that day and I think they still hold true for our Reopening next week.

SEL WEEK #1
HAPPY FRIDAY. As I'm wrapping up the week, I have not yet received clarity on when the district will make all the SEL files available to you, thus I would like to share week 1 with you before checking out today so I know that you have these available to get started. I am happy to answer any questions and partner with anyone.
The document entitled: SEL Week One Lesson Plan - is meant to have everything you need embedded in that one file. The other attachments are just in case a link does not work.

Principal's Message:
This year we wanted to celebrate our AMAZING staff a bit early! The Jefferson PTA recognizes the amount of work that the teachers and staff have done in order to switch from live instruction to distance learning and the amount of work that our staff will have to do in preparation for our kids' return in May.
You have each gone above and beyond the call of duty to help and support the kids and families we serve. As a small token of appreciation, our Jefferson School PTA will provide each of our staff members with a Jefferson Jaguar Pride Shirt. If you have not already completed your sign up, please take a few minutes to sign up to receive your shirt!
Thank You for all that you do and for all that you will do in preparation of our kids returning May 10th.

Buy Out Deadlines-Updates
Please don't wait until the last minute:
FRIENDLY REMINDER
The last day to turn in your Buy Outs will be:
Wednesday May 19th. (EXTENDED)
Gentle Reminder:
* All purchases have to be from this 2020-2021 school year.
(July 1st 2020-May 2021)
* Buy Outs cannot go over $100. (no exceptions)
* You may include multiple receipts in one Buy Out as long as it does not go over $100.
* List all food items on the right side of the Buy Out form.
* Please specify if you would like your Buy Out to be deducted from your Title 1 or School Allocation.
* Please print your Buy Out form, staple the original receipt on the back of the form and submit it to the office.
This year's Allocation Breakdown: 2020-2021
- $175 School Allocation (all teachers)
- $175 Title 1 (all teachers)
- $175 LCFF (new teachers to assignment)
** In November SCC Approved $175 if we were to open in December. This was before the district purchased all the materials bags for each student and we decided at our last faculty meeting for the school to purchase materials for our students for the 6 times that the students will return.**
I say this because, I don't feel comfortable moving forward with the $175 for reopening for only 6 days and not giving SSC an opportunity to vote. That being said, we can provide the staff with an additional $175 for next year's budget in the 21-22 school year.
Next Year's Allocation: 2021-2022:
-$175 School Allocation
-$175 Reopening Deferral (LCFF)
- PLUS! School supplies bag for each student that the district purchased for this school year, but will use it next school year.
** If next year's SSC Approves $175 Title I Funds, then this will also be an additional allocation.

Playworks Updates
We have been working with Playworks to revamp recess for our students to be more interactive. Starting April 26th recess will be in a regular Zoom format where students can see one another and engage with Coach Forest. In addition, we plan to revive the Junior Coach program such that Junior Coaches can ultimately lead recess activities for their peers.
We would appreciate if you could mention and promote this change to your students and we will also work on getting the word out to students and parents.
Lastly, a new Zoom link will be pushed out after recess on Friday April 23rd so that there is no confusion on which link to use.

Principal's Message:
We hope that you had time to Rest, Relax and enjoy your time with your family and friends in a safe and healthy bubble.
After Break , time seems to go a bit faster as we are nearing the end of the 20-21 school year. This is the time where we ask our staff to get ready for the end of the year assessments, create new classes and prepare for a return to the physical building this school year or next.
We don't know what the future has in store for us, but we can collectively start preparing and working together to be prepared for the future.
As we continue to move forward, we need to continue to work collaboratively, communicate and give each other grace and lot's of patience.
Thank you for all that you continue to do for our kids who are at the core of why we are all here.

UPDATE LA COUNTY REOPENING GUIDELINES
Please take a few minutes to review:
Highlights/Amendments:
1) 4/2/2021: • Amends cohort size and distancing requirements for on-site programming other than full-grade in person instruction (day care for school-aged children, specialized services for defined subgroups of children, and administration of college admission tests or AP testing). • Allows students with IEP or 504 plans requiring specialized services to be pulled from their general education group and placed with students not in their primary stable group while receiving special education services, once school has reopened for full-grade in person instruction.
2) At this time while Los Angeles County is in Red, Orange, or Yellow Tier, all schools are permitted to reopen for all students in any grades TK – 12. Note that the state defines an open or reopened school as one that offers in person instruction at least one day each week to all students in at least one of the grades served by the school. Schools that do not meet that criteria may be providing certain in person services to a limited number of students, but do not meet the criteria of being open or having reopened for the purposes of this protocol. Schools open for in person learning must also continue to offer 100% distance learning as an option for those families that prefer it.
3) Schools that are preparing for reopening or electing to remain closed at this time, may still initiate or continue the following in person on campus activities. These activities may occur regardless of whether the school has reopened or remains closed, and regardless of the County’s Tier placement or adjusted case rate
4) No child may be part of more than one cohort. Students who are part of a cohort may leave the cohort for receipt of additional services. Any additional services, however, must be provided either one-on-one by the appropriate specialist in a secure space that is apart from all other people, or the specialist may pull out a subset of the larger cohort and provide services to that subset together, returning that subset back to their larger cohort before providing services to a student or students from a different cohort. Note that this requirement is specific to the situation where limited numbers of students are being provided specialized services for defined subgroups with high need. When a grade has fully opened for in person instruction, this restriction is adjusted (see below). Schools must agree to cooperate with DPH with regard to screening, monitoring and documentation that will be required to permit careful scrutiny of health outcomes associated with this initial period of expansion.
5) Cohort size should be as small as feasible. Six feet of distance between students in these cohorts is recommended however at no time may students be seated less than 3 feet apart. Distance between students and staff desks, and between staff desks must be at least 6 feet. The maximum size of these stable cohorts is based on the number of students that can be seated within the available program space while adhering to minimum distancing requirements. However, cohort size may not exceed a maximum of 30 students and two supervising adults regardless of the size of the available program space.
There is a lot more, Please review the whole document below as the restrictions are easing as we lower the cases in La County.

Principal's Message
You did it! You made it through the first and second trimester of the school year. You don't need me to tell you how unprecedented this year has been. By now you are probably tired of reading or hearing of the word, "unprecedented". After all, you have all conquered the digital divide and now you can all call yourselves technology experts..right? LOL! We all know we are a work in progress.
Here is a little laughter to get you through the week. What happens when students introduce Tiktok to their teachers?
Thank you for all that you do and more importantly, take some time to rest and relax because you sure do deserve it!

Principal's Message
Dear Staff,
This week's pep talk comes from Carson Byblow a 5th grade student who goes to the Anglo American School of Sofia in Bulgaria.
He was born in Belgrade, Serbia but is from Canada. He wrote his talk about growth and fixed mindsets because he has struggled with them for his entire life of ten years.
"The Mindset of a Champion" - Carson Byblow is a 5th grade student who goes to the Anglo American School of Sofia in Bulgaria.
Take a minute to hear his story about his growth mind set on learning how to read and growing past being in Reading Intervention.
Although his life story is miles apart from most of our struggling students, they all share the same struggles with growth and fixed mindsets.
Enjoy! the 5 minute video.

ELPAC Testing
ELPAC Testing is well underway! We had a few unexpected glitches, but we were able to get out students logged in. We did lose another substitute tester this week, which makes finishing testing in a timely manner much more challenging, but Norma Garcia, Christian Mendoza, Kevin Kronfeld, Sandra Santiago and all the testers are working hard to support the students through the process.
Please don't hesitate to reach to Sandra or me if you need assistance.
Thank you!

COVID Setup Update
Thank you teachers for your patience and understanding as we go into your classrooms and begin your COVID compliant classroom setup for your safety and that of our students.
We are focusing our efforts on rearranging TK - 2nd grade classes at this time with the exception of the sample classrooms that were originally setup, one from each grade level.
You can find an update and status of our progress thus far at this link: Desk Inventory and Movement Chart. On this chart, we are documenting where desks are coming from and going to. Any tables that have been removed from rooms have also been labeled with the room’s number from where they were removed.
If you see a custodian while on campus, please give them a big THANK YOU as they are working diligently to ensure that classrooms are not only being cleaned and disinfected, but also that all the moves are being carried out efficiently!

Principal's Message
This week will mark our one year anniversary of the closing our school due to Covid 19. In one year you have all gone above and beyond the call of duty. Your shift from one environment into another happened over night. Your strengths and limitless love for our kids took over and you each provided a great virtual world for our kids.
No matter what our School Board decides this week, I know one thing for sure, Jefferson will go forward and continue to focus on our kids the best way we can.
There is no one more dedicated to the passion of our kids than the love and experience of Jefferson Staff. This is what makes each of you a SUPER HERO!
I am not alone with this feeling or thought! Please click on the video below and see for yourself.
THANK YOU Jefferson Elementary School!
You truly embody Jefferson Strong!

LCFF Survey
The Lennox School District values the input of teachers and staff as it prepares to develop the Local Accountability Plan (LCAP). As a reminder the LCAP is a state mandated plan that sets goals, plans actions, and leverages resources to improve student outcomes.
Please use the link below to take a brief survey. The data collected in this short survey will help guide our three year LCAP plan. The survey was created in consultation with the District School Leadership Team (DSLT). The results will be shared with DSLT and will be used to prioritize LCAP goals and actions.

All Lennox employees are also invited to attend the LCAP Input meeting on Tuesday, March 16th at 2:00 on Zoom. The zoom link will be sent out the morning of the meeting.
District PD Schedule
GLM meeting with Admin Recommendation Follow Up
Research shows that when students are reading at their level, their Reading, ELD, Comprehension increases and their writing improves tenfold! Also, the gaps we are trying to fill lessen and then there is also a love of reading that takes hold when kids are reading at their level and are incentivized when they pass or grow in levels.
We do this for Lexia and we did this last year with accelerated reader!
Once we come back to school when ever that is, MyOn will be secondary only to the Library being a featured location where students will have access to leveled books. However, we will keep MyOn as an alternative if the students cannot find a book at their level or the Library remains closed due to safety precautions.
This is a huge shift. The end goal is not the use of MyOn but rather the regular use of Accelerated Reader and the Star Assessment. MyOn is an alternative when the library and leveled books are not available to our students.
The PTA approved a reward for students in each class and one in each grade level for the end of the year. We will announce this at the next Celebrate Success Assembly!
STAR TESTING CONTINUES
ELPAC Testing
Below, please find a few reminders regarding ELPAC testing.
Our testing window is March 11th - 18th.
Please have your students watch the videos. They are short videos, but are very helpful in getting them to logout of their Chromebooks and enabling them to rapidly be able to access the secure browser.
Please copy and paste the video links to your virtual classroom via Google Classroom, Class Dojo, Remind etc.
- Send students to their testing sessions on time. Either Ms. Santiago or I will contact you and/or parents to help all students login to the testing session. (This may mean that we will join your Zoom session briefly to sweep up any students that have not made it to their testing session. Thank you for your patience and understanding.)
- Remind parents and students of their scheduled testing time.
- Post testing link in Google classroom, Seesaw, and/or email students. (Sharing the link through the Zoom chat has been a challenge for some students. )
- Remind students to return to the test administrators (substitute's) link if they encounter any issues. We will have zoom open at all times so that we can help all students.
- Help prepare students by going over the enclosed ppt and quick tutorial (These are the same instructions for the SBAC).

COVID UPDATE
REOPENING UPDATES:
On Monday, the custodians will:
1. be moving desks from some classes to supplement those classes that do not have desks.
2. be moving out any furniture that does not fit in the classroom as a result of maintaining appropriate distancing (at least 4 ft.).
3. be moving furniture within a classroom in order to adequately space (4ft. apart) desks.
*Please be sure to remove any items that are on desks and/or tables before Monday, 3/8/2.
**All desks/furniture/chairs will be or have been labeled with the room number of the room that it is being removed from.
*** I will share a document with the staff showing the classrooms that have been completed as sample rooms thus far. This document shows where the supplemental desks come from in the classes that previously did not have desks, but rather had tables.
**** Finally, if you have desks that currently hold printers or any other items, please know that these desks have also been included in our inventory count and will be used for repurposing when custodians come to remove desks from classes.
We will do our best to send out a schedule of the day when a given classroom will be rearranged, but truly, this email is the advanced notice, that as of Monday, 3/8/21, custodians will begin to go into classrooms to rearrange and move desks and tables.

PLAYWORKS
Hello Jefferson teachers!
Thanks again for having me in your classrooms for the second cycle of Playworks class game times. Here are a few notes and reminders as we start cycle 3 next week.
- If you aren't sure when your CGT is, you can check the SEL scheduling doc. I've tried to make this document as accessible as possible, but I understand it might still be confusing - if you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask!
- If you need to reschedule your CGT for any reason, you can also refer to this document and email me with your preferred time/date.
- If your zoom classroom info changes, please make sure to update it here.
As a reference, here are the games we played during CGT this cycle. Feel free to continue playing them in your classrooms and modify them to suit your needs. If you come up with any fun modifications, I'd love to hear them!
TK/K
- jump if you...
- popcorn
- hide and seek
1-5

Sometimes I change games mid-cycle depending on what is/isn't working. If you played a different game than what's listed above and you want to know what it was, feel free to email me.
Thank you again for making time to have me in your classroom! I look forward to seeing everyone again in the next few weeks.

Principal's Message:
This year Read Across America is celebrating diversity through the love of reading. The Instructional Service Department has put together some resources that you can use. Please see below.
Read Across America Day is Tuesday, March 2, 2021. This year’s national theme is Creating and Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers. The Instructional Services Department has created a variety of resources to assist you in planning for your Read Across America festivities, including Dr. Seuss read-alouds presented by our district leaders, Dr. Scott Price, Becki Blanco, Dr. Cynthia Foley, and more. The enclosed resources include these virtual read-alouds, games, and fun classroom activities for your students to enjoy as a part of distance learning. Feel free to share these resources directly with students.

Covid 19 Updates
We have great news! All Lennox School District employees (certificated, classified, and administration) are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine beginning Monday, March 1. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has prioritized school district employees in Phase 1B of their vaccination plan because school employees are “essential” and provide critically important services.
Verification of employment letters were sent to employees in February. When vaccinations are open to school district employees, vaccination sites will require proof of employment (the letter) and a photo ID.
You are encouraged to obtain your COVID-19 vaccination using the following options:
Schedule beginning March 1st with My Turn at https://myturn.ca.gov/
Schedule with your health provider; Kaiser or United Healthcare (UHC)
Receive communication from Lennox School District to be scheduled to be vaccinated by partner Beach Cities Health District (all school districts will receive a limited number of vaccination appointments weekly beginning in March.)
The district recommends that employees use Option 1 or Option 2 as soon as appointments become available after March 1st because with Option 3, the district is allocated only a limited number of vaccines weekly based on supply.
With Option 3, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) requires districts to prioritize vaccinations for employees who are directly exposed to students or the public. Individuals who can do their work remotely or in a separate office space will be accommodated later as more doses become available.
Getting an appointment for the vaccine may be challenging. You can use the links below to find available locations. Until March 1st, many of these systems will not allow school district employees to make appointments; however, these appointment systems should be updated by March 1st.

End of Trimester Rollover for Clever; From Ryan
Trimester rollover is set to occur March 2, 2021.
This means that Clever will begin syncing all apps to Powerschool T3 sections starting March 2. Trimester 1 and 2 sections will not disappear, but teachers will begin seeing an additional section for T3. This is normal. Examples from Lexia and Seesaw are visible here.
In Clever, teachers access students based on Powerschool fields and the sections that we assign to each app. These sections update automatically in Clever. Trimester 3 sections will become visible on March 2. Teachers may report seeing a new section in Seesaw or BrainPop, for example. Rest assured that nothing will be removed, but teachers may need to look for their new T3 section in apps.
Co-teachers and instructional aides access students in Clever based on co-teachers setups. These are set up manually each trimester and I am in the process of setting these up for T3, now.
As a technology department, we have made an effort to reduce the number of visible sections in Clever from last year and we are piloting an approach that will hopefully allow us to reduce this further to just one section for the entire year, next year. I hope that this note helps to know what to expect from Clever trimester rollover on March 2.

Principal's Message:
Last week our nation made history once again in it's race to space. In 1969 the first human landed on the moon. Last week one of NASA's rovers landed on Mars to explore possible life on Mars.
"Perseverance set sail for Mars on July 30, 2020. For seven months, it cruised through space tucked up inside its spacecraft like a bug inside its protective shell. The rover’s six wheels were pulled inward, its mast and robotic arm folded, and a small helicopter named Ingenuity was snuggled beneath its belly. Teams at JPL periodically woke the rover during the flight, testing its onboard systems and grabbing a brief audio clip via its onboard microphones."
I share this information with you because I think it's very exciting and there are some resources that our teachers can use to share this information with our students.
National Geographic LINK has information and a youtube video that is posted below. At 1:33:05 mark the video become very exciting as the rover breaks into Mars' atmosphere and lands within minutes. What's more exciting is the look of accomplishment from the amazing team that worked together to achieve this success!
It's also wonderful that they named the rover Perseverance which is aligned with one of our school's vision for success! This mission started many years ago and not even the pandemic slowed or canceled this amazing collaborative work.
It's great for our kids to see, hear and explore.

Instructional Services Update: Becki Blanco
Hello Teachers,
I hope you are having a wonderful week! Below please find some updates from the Instructional Services Department.
Student Calendars
At last night’s board meeting, the board approved the attached students calendars for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school year. Thank you to the following calendar committee members: Robert Estrada, Priscilla Avila, Tam Premsriath, Ruth Culqui, Jimmy Bova, Becky Ruiz, and Nancy Valle
Parent Survey
Thank you teachers and office staff for helping us distribute last week’s TK-5 parent survey. I have attached the slides that were shared last night with the board. In summary, approximately 60% of the TK-5 grade parents prefer to stay on distance learning if schools reopen. This speaks volumes to the dedication and good work our teachers are doing during distance learning.
Black History Month
Black History changed from a week-long event to a month-long celebration in 1976 when U.S. president Gerald Ford extended the recognition to “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Black History Month has been celebrated in the United States every February since. It is a perfect time to highlight the numerous accomplishments of the Black American community with our students.

National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM)
February is also National Children’s Dental Health month to promote the benefits of good oral health in children. This year’s NCDHM campaign slogan is, “Water, Nature’s Drink!”. Let’s take this opportunity to encourage our students to steer clear of sugary sodas and juices to promote oral health. The American Dental Association is offering FREE digital posters and downloadable materials on the NCDHM website: ADA.org/ncdhm The Lennox School District recognizes the importance of improved dental health and preventive dental care and asks that teachers find a few minutes this month to encourage students to consider the importance of good oral hygiene.
Parent Workshops Available
The Instructional Service department has created some Math Parent Workshops videos to support parents with distance learning. The workshops explain some of the strategies teachers are using to support the concept of number sense and how they at home can engage in discussions and activities that further develop this concept. The videos can be found in the Lennox School District website under the Learning at Home tab.

February 8, 2021
This week marks our 16th President's Birthday. Abraham Lincoln is credited for many accomplishments. However, one of his most touching moments in life did not occur while being President. It happened when he was going to send his son Teddy to school for the first time. Take a moment to hear what he wrote to his son's teacher. It's incredible that even the sitting President who was going through so much at the time was humbled and nervous about his son's education. The letter is sweet and validating to the work that educators do every day to mold the lives of our kids. Thank You for all that you do! Your love, dedication and impact will never change.

Keys to Happier Living
The Ten Keys to Happier Living are based on a review of the latest research from psychology and related fields. Everyone's path to happiness is different, but the evidence suggests these Ten Keys consistently tend to have a positive impact on people's happiness and well-being.
The first five keys (GREAT) are about how we interact with the outside world in our daily activities. They are based on the Five Ways to Wellbeing developed by nef as part of the Foresight Project. The second five keys (DREAM) come from inside us and depend on our attitude to life.

ELPAC & LAPTOP SWAP
Our ELPAC testing here at Jefferson is March 11th -18th for 3rd -5th grades.
A sub will administer the ELPAC to 3rd-5th grade EL students in a separate Zoom class that the EL students will log into and the subs will manage. Teachers will need to share the Sub's zoom link with their EL students. Teachers will receive a list with their ELs and the zoom link for the sub before testing.
Chromebooks are needed for all testing (including SBAC).
Our Chromebook exchange days will be as follows:
3rd Grade: February 16 - 9:00-11:30am, 12:30-2:30pm
(we currently have enough devices to swap for 3rd)
4th Grade: February 17 - 9:00-11:30am, 12:30-2:30pm
(we currently have enough devices to swap for 4th)
5th Grade: February 23 - 9:00-11:30am, 12:30-2:30pm (pending that DO has given us our inventory)
The exchange will take place at the kindergarten gate between the teachers' lounge and the cafeteria. Students must bring their previously-loaned devices and chargers, and anyone picking up a device for the first time will need to sign a form that we will have for them. Again, this is only for students who do not currently have a Chromebook from Lennox.
In order to organize this, Luis will need teachers’ help. He has shared a Google Sheets document below that has information on which students have district devices and which of those are Chromebooks. When you have a moment, please go to the sheet and select the tab pertaining to your grade level at the bottom. Students are organized by their teacher, alphabetically. Please survey your class and check that the checkboxes under "Has School Device?" and "Has Chromebook?" are accurate. If they are not, please check or uncheck them for him accordingly.

Swun Math Update Distance Learning Pacing Guides Reminder
In the distance learning pacing guides teachers are allotted more time to teach the concepts so you do not necessarily need to teach one lesson per day. This year we have only scheduled two benchmarks so you have until the beginning of May to help student master trimester 2 content. We will do our best to cover some of the trimester 3 content and make note of what was not taught this year so that we can address any learning gaps next school year. You can find the most updated distance learning guides in the Instructional Services Department folder (in the Swun Pacing Guides folder).

Problem of the Day (POD) Support
During Tuesday's Swun Math Workshop K-2 (January 26), the math TOSA shared some ways teachers can expose students to some of the trimester 3 content not covered in the distance learning guide. One of the ways you can expose students to some of the content is by using the POD part of the Swun lesson as a way to model and practice with your students. A set of weekly POD plans and other resources to support you with trimester 3 content are now available in the Instructional Service Department folder (in the Swun Resource folder). Currently there are three weekly plans per grade for kinder- 2nd grade. The plans for 3rd to 5th grade will be uploaded and shared at the next Swun Math Workshop for 3rd-5th teachers scheduled for Tuesday, February 2.

Optional NGSS Science Lessons & Videos
The South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) has reached out to our district as they partner with elementary schools in communities that are disproportionately impacted by air pollution. Their complementary program, CAPES provides examples for how students can become ‘Clean Air Heroes.’ The program offers access to a series of three videos for the school year. The videos feature topics such as Air Quality 101, the Air Quality Index (AQI) and becoming a Clean Air Hero. Each 3 - 5 minute video is accompanied by lesson plans, worksheets, and answer keys that meet Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and can be implemented within 20 minutes. The goal is to introduce students to air pollution concepts at a young age to encourage their engagement on air quality issues as they grow older. To find out more information on how to implement this program during distance learning please attend a PD session on February 23, 2021. In addition, South Coast AQMD offers staff for one-on-one assistance with implementation and guest speakers via zoom.

Parents needing to pick up more than one grade level can request other grade level at time they arrive.
All materials will need to be ready by 12:00pm on Feb. 2nd to be picked up by custodians.
LAPTOP SWAP 3rd-5th Grades
In preparation for the state test, we will be providing every 3rd-5th student with a Chromebook.
We have planned dates for students and parents to come to Jefferson and either exchange their non-Chromebook device for a Chromebook or pick one up if they don't have a district device already.
Jefferson's ELPAC testing window is March 11-18. March 11-18 window is for ELPAC. The Chromebooks will be used for this and state testing.
Our Chromebook exchange days will be as follows:
3rd Grade: February 16 - 9:00-11:30am, 12:30-2:30pm
4th Grade: February 17 - 9:00-11:30am, 12:30-2:30pm
5th Grade: February 23 - 9:00-11:30am, 12:30-2:30pm
The exchange will take place at the kindergarten gate between the teachers' lounge and the cafeteria. Students must bring their previously-loaned devices and chargers, and anyone picking up a device for the first time will need to sign a form that we will have for them. Again, this is only for students who do not currently have a Chromebook from Lennox.
In order to organize this, I need teachers' help. I have shared a Google Sheets document below that has information on which students have district devices and which of those are Chromebooks.
When you have a moment, please go to the sheet and select the tab pertaining to your grade level at the bottom. Students are organized by the teacher, alphabetically.
Please survey your class and check the checkboxes under "Has School Device?" and "Has Chromebook?" are accurate. If they are not, please check or uncheck them for me accordingly.
IAB/ELPAC/SBAC Follow Up:
Norma Garcia and Arleen will conduct a follow-up SBAC training to review the Accessibility Supports that are both embedded and non-embedded during testing in order to assist students.
SBAC testing window remains in May.
Chromebooks must be used for SBAC testing. We are in the process of swapping these out for the Lenovos and for ensuring that all our students have these for testing.
Our ELPAC testing window is March 11th - 18th for grades 3rd - 5th and May 12th - 20th for grades K - 2nd.
K - 2nd grade testing will be administered one to one.
3rd - 8th grade testing will occur remotely through the use of Chromebooks.
EL students will login to a separate Zoom class and a sub will manage that class in order to administer the Listening, Speaking and Reading portions of the ELPAC.
Please continue to promote recess! It’s a great way for our students to get up and moving before class starts. Thank you!
Class game time starts next week! We will follow Week One Schedule, see above, so If you are in the Week One Schedule, get ready for some fun with Coach Forest who will come to your class using your zoom link at the designated time.

Change in Your Teaching Schedule- REQUEST
If for any reason your teaching schedule needs to change, please don't hesitate to inform Mr. Estrada directly. Please don't inform Arleen, Emily or Leslie. Mr. Estrada as the School Principal is the only Administrator that can provide the necessary change to the schedule. There are two reasons why communication needs to be consistent.
1. Our educational minutes are mandated by the state of California. We need to make sure we are meeting the mandated minutes.
2. This will ensure that the Admin Team will be up to date with the necessary communication with the office staff who will undoubtedly answer any phone calls that come in from our parents.
Once approved, there are a couple of things that we need to make sure we never tell our parents the following.
1. We are cancelling our class today. What can we say? We are moving our Synchronous (live instruction) to Asynchronous (independent instruction) for the following reason. We can't cancel instruction. The state will run an audit to make sure each grade level provided it's minimum amount of instruction.
2. We are not Teaching Science or Social Studies this semester. What can we say? This semester we are "Formally"assessing Science and or Social Studies therefore we will assign a grade for the following..

New Counseling Assistant
Please help us welcome our new Counseling Assistant Catherine Ayala. She is in school to be a School Counselor. She has worked in Lennox in many roles. She started working in LEAP worked at Jefferson then at Huerta. We are very lucky to have her back in her new role at Jefferson as the Counseling Assistant. Welcome Catherine!
My name is Catherine Ayala and I am the new counselor assistant here at Jefferson. I am very excited to be back! :) I previously worked here as a program leader for morning LEAP and since then I have worked at different school sites within the district. I am a recent CSUF graduate, but I do plan on going to graduate school to pursue a career as a counselor. I grew up in Lennox and my goal is to be able to give back to the community/schools that have helped me become the person I am today. Everyday I am given the opportunity to make a difference in a student's life and that is the most rewarding part of my job. I am here to help in any way I can! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to working with you all! :)

December 4th Distribution and Celebration Day
We wanted to return to this item and provide more clear rationale for the schedule. The reasons for the singular distribution days are:
1) We got a lot of feedback from parents who have children in multiple grades that coming on more than one day was a challenge. Some parents had to request time off work to attend and we want to make it as easy on them as possible. By asking all teachers to have materials ready on Dec 3rd, the day before, we are able to grab materials from multiple teachers without having to interrupt teachers in their rooms or at home.
2) The parents really want to support a teacher celebration lunch, and we are only able to get the In & Out Truck for one day.
3) The set up and staffing for the distribution days takes coordination and people power and is more sustainable on one day.
4) We believe that we can host more than one grade level at a time by using the entire parking lot and creating and distributing the map in advance.
We appreciate your cooperation and support as we implement this schedule. We welcome your feedback after the distribution regarding any changes needed.

Clippers Reading Program: Starts Today!
We are excited to have your school participate in this year’s LA Clippers Read to Achieve Minutes Challenge! Below is information for you and your students to track minutes read using either the online platform OR paper tracking sheets.
The program starts on Monday, November 2.
KEY DATES
Tracking Starts: Monday, November 2, 2020
Tracking Ends: Friday, December 11, 2020
Program Results Due: Friday, December 18, 2020
Using Online Tracking
This year we are working with Beanstack, an online reading tracker, to track your student’s minutes at the website below:
LA Clippers Read to Achieve Minutes Challenge Website:
laclippers.beanstack.com
Parents/guardians can register their student(s) on the site and can easily track the minutes read throughout the 6-week program. On the site they will register under the school name, so that we can keep track of the total minutes read from your school at the end of the program and so every student’s minutes will count!

Students will be assigned books to read at their Lexile level. Once the students finish reading the books they will take the Accelerated Reader test and garner points. This will be a great motivator for our students! Especially those who are not reading on their own.
I look forward to discussing with the staff possible ways to motivate the students. All suggestions are welcomed!

Staff Motivation- Theme Days and Raffles at Meetings
We are going to bring this up at the JLT Meeting but before we did, we wanted to inform the staff first. We would like to spice up our Faculty Meeting by having raffle opportunities and also at time have themed meetings such as JES T-Shirt Day, Hawaiian Day, and Sports Day, etc.ONCE A MONTH or Bi Monthly? We wanted to share this idea with the staff so that if there are any feelings good or bad that you share this with your grade level rep so that they can share this at the JLT Meeting. This is just an idea and we wanted to see what the staff thought.

Materials Pick Up & Staff Celebration in December
We would like to Celebrate with our Staff the HUGE honor that we were given by the Public Schools. We thought about having an opportunity to celebrate our staff at our next scheduled Materials Pick-Up Date. On this day, if you will be participating in the Materials Distribution we would provide our Staff with a Lunch and a memento. This is also an idea that we wanted to bring up to our staff and we will discus this at our next JLT Meeting.

Teachers will not need to do anything to prep for this, only sign up if you would like your kids to have the option, and Emily & Team will come to your zoom class, and stay on after to play social games, host discussions, circle time, lunch and learn with your kids. Parent Survey on Distance and Hybrid Learning
As many of you now know the District sent out a survey to all our parents. The District wants to gather more information on how they feel about their children coming back to the school sites.
I am including the survey that was sent out here. Let's not read into the Tea Leaves. We don't know how or what the District intends to do with the results. More information is coming.

JLT Meeting and Notes
On Monday we had our first JLT Meeting. We had follow up discussion on the topics we discussed at the faculty meeting and we also discussed the issues that were submitted by the grade levels. JLT NOTES LINK HERE!
Please keep in mind our process for collaboration:
1. Principals will introduce new topics at the Faculty meeting so that everyone will hear the same message and explanation.
2. Teachers can give feedback if possible at the meeting or through the following JLT Meeting.
3. If there is still follow up that is needed and they were not addressed in the faculty meeting and or JLT meeting, then the issue can be brought up to the IPD or Professional Relations Meetings at the District Level.
* Remember: It's a professional courtesy and practice to have all issues resolved at the school site level. Please read section on grievance process in union manual.
The Following Principal Items were discussed:
1. Jefferson School Grade Level and Staff Meeting Norms:
Norms were shared and discussed at the faculty meeting and JLT Meeting. There were no recommendations given at either meeting. A clarifying question was asked by an individual staff member regarding having the camera on during faculty meeting due to a personal issue. Response: Our meetings are professional setting and connecting with the entire staff is necessary. Seeing everyone's face is an essential element for the facilitator of the meeting just as it is for the teacher who is teaching the classroom. Faces inform the instruction or in this case how the message is being communicated. However, if there is a situation where the staff member is having technical difficulties or is not able to connect and this is not the norm or pattern, it's OK to have an off day. We only ask that the staff member share this ahead of time with the facilitator of the meeting or a soon as they possibly can.
2. JLT Responsibilities and GLM Meeting Process:
We are asking our JLT Reps to ensure that our Grade Levels Meeting at least ONCE a Week. The purpose of these meetings is to meet to collaborate and calibrate the instructional best practices and resources. Share created lessons and materials. Create pacing and supports for students. Once a month, we ask that the grade level meets to discuss nut and bolts items. We ask that a Collaboration Log is always completed and shared with the Admin Team when the meeting is done. Grade Level Folders were shared with the Grade Level Reps. Link Click Here.
Please fill in your Grade Level Zoom Link Here.
3. Sub Zoom Plans/Log In Update:
Teacher were emailed updated directions on how to give the admin team and Leslie access to your Zoom Sessions without having to change passwords or have to open the class for the sub. Please click on the link for more information. Click Here
4. Perfect Attendance:
We discussed the option to reward students with Perfect Attendance while we zoom. The current system does not allow us to do this because we can only take attendance once not twice. It was decided that we will not move forward with this reward right now and we will revisit this when we all come back to the physical school site.
5. Celebrate Success Assembly Schedule:
When the District created the schedule, it created the 9am to 9:30 block for teachers to provide all of the students with an opening, calendar review and SEL Class Meeting. This is the only time that Special Ed or RTI is taking place. This is the time we will use moving forward. We are working with a grade level to see if another time can work that does not affect any of our special ed or RTI students. Follow up will take place. Thank you for all the teachers for taking the time to submit your student's names. Assembly Schedule Link Here!
Parent Meeting with Principal October 8th 5pm.

ANNOUCEMENTS
Celebrate Success Assembly Update
Thankfully, we have not shared this information with our families. We informed our students and parents that the assembly would be coming at the end of September or the beginning of October for the month of September.
Our current schedule is creating opportunities for our neediest students to miss out on their additional services. We have received some suggestions from our staff on a time that does not interfere with PE, Speech and or RTI.
Additionally, It was suggested that we create a consistent school assembly time so that the teachers can plan a head of time and not have to worry about which service their students would be missing during a Blue Block Time.
We would like to suggest that all the assemblies start at 9am and end at 9:30am.
We would spread the assemblies over 7 days so that each grade can have their own assembly day.
Please discuss this as a grade level and we will make a decision at our JLT Meeting.
Current Schedule:
AVID Celebrate Success Assembly Schedule
9/30: 1st- 9:45am
9/30: 2nd- 1:00pm
10/1: TK AM/PM- 10:15am
10/2: 4th- 9:00am
10/2: 3rd- 10:15am
10/2: 5th- 1:00pm
10/5: Kinder- 10:00am
Proposed Schedule 9am to 9:30am:
AVID Celebrate Success Assembly Schedule
10/1- 5th Grade
10/2- 4th Grade
10/5- 3rd Grade
10/6- 2nd Grade
10/7- 1st Grade
10/8- Kindergarten
10/9- TK AM/PM
This new schedule will also give us time to discuss that Perfect Attendance Award and we will have an opportunity to walk our teachers through the Webinar Zoom Tool.
We will then send out invitations to teachers and families on Tuesday morning. If we keep the original time slots, Since Wednesday is cutting it very close, we can move our 1st and 2nd grade assemblies to 10/1 for 2nd grade and 10/2 for 1st grade.
Thanks for your flexibility while we work collaboratively.
MyOwn Reading and Scholatic News Site Licese
As we continue to do our research we have found two services that would support our students with access to books at their level and a digital scholastic news. Huerta is currently using MyOn Reading. These books like Epic give our students access to hundreds of books at thier lexile level and myOn Reader is connected to STAR and Accelerated Reader as soon as you finish a book you take the test and you get the points.
YouTube Teacher Explanation: Click Here
myON Reader: (Epic Reading)
Renaissance myON® Reader is a student-centered, personalized literacy environment that gives students access to more than 6,000 enhanced digital books. Titles are dynamically matched to each individual student's interests, grade and Lexile® reading level.
myON NEWS: (Scholastic News)
Please see both Links for additional information:
MyON has expanded their literacy ecosystem to include myON NEWS, which publishes five original articles designed for students every weekday, 52 weeks a year. All articles are available at three personalized reading levels, in English and Spanish, and are approved by education experts and child psychologists. What does it help with? & What lesson time does it use? My News (Scholastic News) Click Here for full information!
Both of these services are CLEVER Accessible.

At the Principal's meeting Emergency Plans was discussed and it was shared that in a normal circumstance the teacher has always been asked to have emergency sub plans in the classroom ready just in case. This is also the case if a teacher goes on leave for any length. Now that we are in a pandemic, it is suggested that our staff have emergency lesson plans that can be shared with admin in a google folder where admin/school secretary has access to these emergency plans. If there is an extended case of an emergency your admin team will work with the long term sub. Please add your emergency sub plans in this folder. If your grade level wants to create a generic plan for everyone in the grade level this is OK too. Please name the file your name and grade level.

Google Classroom Follow Up-Why So Many E-mails? I AM SO SORRY!
As you know navigating through Google Classroom has been a journey for me too! I now know why my emails have been coming in 2's or you have been seeing the submit button and getting the you did not turn in an assignment on time notification.
When I share information on Google Classroom if I share the information as an "assignment" you the student (teacher) will receive an email informing you that you have an assignment due.
If I proceed to enter a due date, you will receive an additional email informing you that you turned in your assignment late if you did not click on the submit button before the due date even though you had followed through and emailed me the information that I asked for before the due date.
Again, I want to apologize for the unnecessary stress and anxiety this cause the staff. I am deeply sorry!
If you see below, the pictures show how I have some information tagged as "Assignments" and others as "Materials".
What have I learned? For now on when I want to share information I will share it as a "Material". This does not have a due date function and will not bother you with late notices because you did not hit the submit button. Also, I will only share information once. Either as a Google Email or a Google Classroom Material not both as I have been doing as well.
The sad part is that my learning journey is affecting each of you as you are my collective class in the Google Platform. I will do better and I appreciate all your feedback because it will only allow me to learn and grow as your school leader.
Thank You!

Student Engagement Q & A for Teachers
Daily Participation and Weekly Engagement Report
Q & A For Teachers
SECTION A
•Certificated Employee: All employees must use legal name on weekly engagement log and daily participation to match Powerschool weekly attendance summary report; legal signature.
•Period: If at an elementary school, type N/A.SECTION B
*Teacher: should type date of the week (9/1/2020) under day of the week
SECTION C
•Certificated Employee: All employees must use legal on weekly engagement log and daily participation
•Period: If at an elementary school, type N/A. If at LMS, teachers type class period.
Legend for Participation Codes:
100 - No Participation = Student did not participate in either Synchronous Instruction or Asynchronous Instruction.
You could pair with Code 400 if Student was out “sick” but still completed the asynchronous assignments. It would still remain absent on Powerschool.
You could pair with Code 500 you made contact with the parent but not work was completed. It would still remain absent on Powerschool.
200 - In-Person Instruction = you provide in person instruction. At this time, we are not providing in-person instruction.
300 - Synchronous Instruction = student participated in online instruction in real time.
400 - Asynchronous Instruction = student completed study material that you provided.
500 - Other: If none of the codes apply but you’ve been in contact with the student/parent regarding student participation. (i.e. connectivity issue, device not working properly, student/parent doesn’t understand how to connect, etc.) It could be a phone call, email, reminder/text message, etc.
Q & A For Teachers:
Q: Can a student have more than one Participation Code:
Answer: Yes. Ideally, we’d like for students to connect synchronous and asynchronous.
Q: Can District Office provide teachers and staff examples of Code “500 - Other”
Answer: If none of the codes apply but you’ve been in contact with the student/parent regarding student participation. (i.e. connectivity issue, device not working properly, student/parent doesn’t understand how to connect, etc.)
Q: Can the District Office provide the independent study process during distance learning, if any ?
There hasn’t been “independent studies” assigned during distance learning because a student can participate asynchronously, which is essentially Independent Studies. We want to make sure that students are participating and engaged in some format. Ideally, we’d like to have students participate synchronously and ashychongly, but, for some students, that may be difficult due to other factors. If you have students that are not able to participate synchronously, please check to see if they have the ability to connect and, if not, refer to the school counselor to see if we can help remove any obstacle. But please be aware that some students may not be able to participate synchronously.
Q: Since Monday was a holiday, do I need to put the code 100 for each student?
Answer: No. You would leave it blank since the “Non-instructional Day” is already indicated in Section B - Weekly Assignments.
SECTION C
Q: Do we input the number of minutes of instruction? and if so how many minutes? This is the blank that is provided right above the teacher's signature.
Answer: add in the time value of assignments to those the teacher is certifying. If the teacher is certifying to a full instructional day, then input “a full day” into the fillable section. If the teacher is certifying to a specific time value in hours or minutes, then input the specific number of minutes or hours being certified into the fillable section.
Questions:
Q: During distance learning, are tardies being recorded in PowerSchool. We noticed a teacher recorded “T’s”. It could be isolated but just asking.
A: No. Do not use T on powerschool. If teachers want to keep a separate record for Tardies, that is fine but don’t put it into Powerschool. If you do, you’ll have to keep back up information such as notes.
Q: To match powerschool with weekly engagement log and daily participation for the week of 9/1-9/4, do teachers and/or the office need to record absences for 8/31.
A: You need to record absence on Powerschool for 8/31. You are not required to record 8/31 in your weekly engagement.
Q: Do teacher signatures need to be submitted with a wet signature in BLUE ink?
A: It is preferred that you use Blue ink
Q: Which code should be used for holidays? Or leave blank since it was a non-instructional day?
A: If you are referring to the “Combined Daily Participation and Weekly Engagement Report,” do not include a code. Make sure that “Non-Instructional Day” is checked off on Section A.
Q: Reporting an absence, is it recommended that parents inform the teacher or call the front office.
A: Site specific. Notes must be attached to the weekly attendance report.
Q: Week 1 Logs, 9/1-9/4. To match powerschool weekly attendance summary reports, do we have teachers type August/September in the month box under section A and section B.
A: Type in September, which is when we are officially required to record the information.
Q: Week 1 Logs, 9/1-9/4. To match powerschool weekly attendance summary reports, if a student does not have internet and the student has not completed assignments. Do we code “U” in PowerSchool and code 100 in weekly engagement and daily participation log?
A: You would put “U” and 100 if the student didn’t participate either synchronously or asynchronously and the parent did not state the child was sick or another valid. No reason to indicate an “Excused Absence”.
Q: Can a student be marked absent (100) but also have Asynchronous (400) selected if they submitted work?
A: Yes, ONLY if the student was Absent on Powerschool. (i.e. student was out sick but still completed the assignment).
Q: Is the 100 code no participation during synchronous learning?
A: No. 100 code means they didn't participate in either synchronous or asynchronous.
Q: Is my teacher log supposed to match my attendance in Powerschool?
A: Yes.
100 = Absent
200 = Present
300 = Present
400 = Present
500 = Contact but NO participation via Synchronous or Asynchronous - Absent on Powerschool.
Scenarios
Scenario 1:
If a student did not ZOOM and did not turn in assignments but parents contacted me, then that is a 500? So, on Powerschool I should input "A".
Answer: Yes. You can also check off 500 because contact was made.
Scenario 2:
Part 1: Student does not ZOOM but DOES submit work and parents do call in then I mark 400 but not 300.
Answer: Yes, you would only mark 400. You can also mark 500 because of the parent contact. In Powerschool, student is marked as Present.
Part 2: It will still be a 400 if student's submit work but parents don't call in, right?
Answer: Yes. It would be 400 only. In Powerschool, student is marked as Present.
Scenario 3:
If students DO NOT ZOOM and DOES NOT submit assignments and there is NO parent contact in any way then that is 100. In Powerschool then that is a DEFINITE "A"
Answer: Correct!
Scenario 4:
If students ZOOM and submit work then I will mark BOTH 300 and 400?
Answer: Correct!
Scenario 5:
If a student did not show up for zoom today and the parent did not contact me ....
Is that a 100 for Synchronous but he gets 400 for asynchronous?
Answer: You do not need to put 100. Only 400. The key is, how did the student participate on that day.
Scenario 6:
I am not able to digitally sign the form. It’s asking me for a password.
Answer: Go ahead and date and email without it.

Student of the Month Assemblies
This year we will continue to have our AVID Celebrate Success Assemblies at the end of the month. The Assemblies are scheduled in the school calendar.
We need your input. We scheduled the assemblies during Blue Blocks so that we do not interrupt instruction. We are flexible with the time. If your grade level will like to have the assembly during a green block time, please have your grade level rep email me.
The assemblies will be conducted by grade level. Only the grade level will be invited to each assembly. We will be using the District's Webinar Link.
I will share more information at our Faculty meeting on the 23rd.
This year, we asking our teachers to continue to submit names of students who will be celebrated. The Link to submit names is below.
September Celebrate Success Submission Link: Click Here!
LEXIA: Any student who has earned a Certificate before the Assembly.
Reward: Their names will appear in a special spotlight during the assembly. Teachers will print or email the office the student Certificate.
Student of the Month: Teachers will choose 2 names each month that demonstrated success. This is a teacher's choice.
Reward: Teachers will give a 2 minutes explanation for each student. Students will be given a certificate that they can pick up at the school office.
Perfect Attendance: Teachers will submit names of students who have shown up to both Zoom sessions and are on time. This will be our motivator for our students to Zoom on time every day!
Prize: Students names will be flashed during the assembly and they will also receive a Brag Tag for the month.

Kids without Technology:
We are in the process of replacing the technology for all 3rd-5th grade students who recieved an iPad. Please take a minute to complete this form. Luis is working on swamping the iPad for a Laptop or Chromebook.
PLEASE WAIT FOR LUIS TO CONTACT FAMILIES
Devices are very limited, and we don't want parents to arrive and leave with nothing. We are putting students on a list and will be calling them to come in once a device is ready.
For K-2nd, we have iPads available, but I need at least a day's notice in order to have one ready because all devices are centralized at LMS.
For 3rd-5th, everyone received a list that we are adding names of students to who need to swap or pick up a device if they don't already have one. I am preparing what laptops we have left as well as waiting for a shipment of Chromebooks. Parents will receive a call when they can come in to pick up a laptop.

Best Practices for Securing Your Virtual Classroom Zoom Security Protocol
We found some important information that we wanted to share on keeping your Zoom Link Safe.
Please make sure all your students have their camera on at all times. Tell them that this is how you know they are safe. Student engagement counts when you can see your students and seeing them also informs your instruction. :-)
Security options when scheduling a class
The cool thing about Zoom is that you have these and other protection options at your fingertips when scheduling a class and before you ever have to change anything in front of your students. Here are a few of the most applicable:
- Require registration: This shows you every email address of everyone who signed up to join your class and can help you evaluate who’s attending.
- Protect the classroom: Create a passcode and share with your students via school email so only those intended to join can access a virtual classroom.
- Allow only authenticated users to join: Checking this box means only members of your school who are signed into their Zoom account can access this particular class.
- Disable join before host: Students cannot join class before the teacher joins and will see a pop-up that says, “The meeting is waiting for the host to join.“
- Manage annotation: Teachers should disable participant annotation in the screen sharing controls to prevent students from annotating on a shared screen and disrupting class.
Remove a participant
If someone who’s not meant to be there somehow manages to join your virtual classroom, you can easily remove them from the Participants menu. Hover over their name, and the Remove option (among other options) will appear. Click to remove them from your virtual classroom, and they won’t be allowed back in.
Control screen sharing
To give instructors more control over what students are seeing and prevent them from sharing random content, Zoom recently updated the default screen-sharing settings for our education users. Sharing privileges are now set to “Host Only,” so teachers by default are the only ones who can share content in class.
However, if students need to share their work with the group, you can allow screen sharing in the host controls. Click the arrow next to Share Screen and then Advanced Sharing Options. Under “Who can share?” choose “Only Host” and close the window. You can also change the default sharing option to All Participants in your Zoom settings.

THANK YOU!
Special Education Updates/Reminders:
We wanted to give everyone an update on our Special Ed Program as it changes throughout the year. I want to thank everyone for taking the time to include all our students into our classrooms and making sure that all our students are given the opportunity to Celebrate Success.
IEP students are being supported in a mainstream environment where they are being included in the instruction during the green block and are also being pulled out to meet their IEP Goals during the Blue Blocks. Our Special Ed teachers are working closely with our Gen Ed Teachers to create a schedule that supports instruction for all our students.
Additionally, we wanted to inform all our teachers that IEP meetings will continue to take place via Zoom. An invitation will be sent to our teachers ahead of time. Please make sure to check your emails in the google classroom calendar for invitations.
Lastly, we wanted to inform our staff that all assessments have been placed on hold pending students coming back to campus. Mr. Rodriguez will touch base with teachers when assessments resume.
Thanks for your flexibility with us!
ELD Materials for ELL Student Only:
August 24th to August 28th 2020
Jefferson Calendar Link:
School Materials:
You stuffed bags, lifted boxes, collated materials, labeled bags, answered phones, cut, glued, organized, personalized materials, greeted families, problem solved, smiled, sweat, carted trailers, zoomed, supported one another, lifted each other up, and distributed THOUSANDS of materials with love and care!
At the end of today, we only have 38 unclaimed bags and many of these families reached out and are coming next week!
THIS was a tremendous undertaking. We all should be VERY proud of what we accomplished. It has set the tone for a year of many accomplishments, many new undertakings, and all of us working together for the same goal - giving all our students our very best, even when we don't feel like we are at our very best. They feel your hard work. I felt it and it energized me!
Have a wonderful, much needed weekend of rest! Take time for YOU and next week will be another great week!
Families can come all next week 11-1 to pick up unclaimed materials. (We won't turn them away if they come at other times, but please don't advertise this
Attendance Concerns (3 or more times):
Starting on Monday, Teachers can log in the students who are not logging in, are missing zoom sessions, or are absent 3 or more times. (Missing In Action Students)
1. We need our staff to make the initial 3 attempts before logging in any students.
2. The Counseling staff will follow up with the family and follow up with the teacher.
3. After Back to School Night, we will begin to enforce any legal supports the county will officer school districts.
4. If a child does not have technology or a hot spot, they are not absent.
5. If a child logs in for any amount of time, they are not absent for the time being.
For now we need to have a running log of students who are missing all instruction and teacher and office follow up.
Working Together and Documentation is Key
Thank you in advance for your help!

Star Testing 1st and 2nd
Star Testing will begin on Monday August 24th. Due to the fact that students in grades 1 & 2 have iPads, they must take the Star assessment at home with parent supervision. This is not ideal for so many reasons, but iPads do not support having more than one app operating at a time, so there is no way for us to monitor them in a Zoom meeting. FYI, this is the way all 1st and 2nd graders in the district will be tested. The Intervention teachers are creating an instructional video, as well as written instructions in both Spanish and English which you all need to share with your parents. This will come in a separate email as we are still working on it.
On the day your students are to take the test (see schedule), you will need to invite me to your zoom class so that I can spend a few minutes explaining the Star testing expectations to them. Please make sure to send me the invite the day before to avoid any last minute issues. The testing schedule is attached.
After all of your students have completed the test, I will email you a PDF of your class results. You are welcome (as always) to go onto the Renaissance site for your results, however the site has a new interface that is very different. I am just getting familiar with it myself.
District has extended the window for Star testing to three weeks in order to have time for any issues that we may deal with during distance testing. Intervention will tentatively begin on September 14th. Information coming soon on Intervention.
Therefore, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any concerns and/or questions. Thank you for your help!
Parents should be able to watch it on their phone or other device, but the links below should work if you run into this issue.

Star Prep for Next Week 3/4/5
As you already know we will start the Star assessment this coming Monday, August 24th. Therefore, in order to be well prepared for this, I am providing you with the following list of things to do before your testing day.
· Find out the kind of device your student is using (laptop or iPad). Students who are using an iPad/tablet will still be taking the test with your class but we will not be able to see them while they take it.
· Show your students how to use the reactions on Zoom. We will require them to give us a thumbs up when done.
· Remind them to sit in a quiet place.
· Remind them use the bathroom before starting the test
· Tell students to have a quiet activity (book, paper to draw, etc.) to work on when finishing the test.
· Students cannot add a background on the day of test. We were informed that some backgrounds don’t let you see if someone is standing behind them.
· Remember that you will be creating the Zoom invite and sharing it with me and Kristy Morales. Please share it the day before your test so that I can make sure the aides receive it.
· Stay connected the day your students test in order to help us monitor students.
We are in this together.
Therefore, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any concerns and/or questions. Thank you for your help!
Parents should be able to watch it on their phone or other device, but the links below should work if you run into this issue.

SEL Office Support
Hello again from the Juntos team! As we wrap up the unprecedented first week of a new school year, we can imagine you may be excited/relieved to finally have met your students, drained by a week of trouble-shooting, and exhausted after these hot hot days.
First, we wanted to thank you all again for your participation in the SEL training on Tuesday, and let you know that we’re looking forward to being able to continue to offer support for social emotional learning throughout this year. Below we have a few immediate offers:
We are establishing Drop-in Office Hours:
Through the end of September, our office hours will be Mondays and Fridays from 2:15-3:15
During those times, we’ll be on a zoomline available to answer any questions about brain breaks, the curriculum, connectedness strategies, or whatever is happening with your kiddos. We’re happy to offer strategies or just lend an empathetic ear.
To drop in, please follow the Zoom link below:
Join zoom meeting:
https://us04web.zoom.us/j/73514490128?pwd=V3VVRFdSQzBmbDdta3JhSWRUUjRjZz09
Meeting ID: 735 1449 0128
Passcode: sM7dkh
Of course, you can always contact us outside of these times, but we wanted to schedule times you could easily get someone one the line to respond to any questions or challenges you’re meeting as they arise.
We also created sign-ups for guest visits to classrooms:
These are short time-slots in the next two weeks when one of us is available to join your class zoom call and lead a quick brain break (maybe while you’re taking attendance or as a warm-up?)
Please let us know what would support you (Any requests around timing, if you would prefer a check in, something active, calming, combo, etc.).

DISTANCE LEARNING LEAP
I wanted to give you an update on how L.E.A.P. will be running during distance learning. We will be providing homework and tutoring assistance in the afternoon along with clubs (dance, music and movement, boot camp fitness and others).
I have already emailed parents who signed up for L.E.A.P. electronically., but for those parents who would like to sign up their child they can email/call me. L.E.A.P. will officially begin on Friday, August 21st.
Once everyone has settled in and adjusted to their schedule please keep L.E.A.P. in mind. We will be offering virtual academic support in the afternoon and we still have room to accept more students. If teachers need to refer/recommend a student to LEAP they can email me.

Below is an example of a schedule:
Super Min Day Schedule Reminder:
In consultation with LTA, I wanted to clarify instructional minutes on super minimum days, early dismissal days on Wednesdays and once a month first Friday's. The SB 98 instructional minutes remain the same for the student. Meaning they are still required to be engaged synchronously, asynchronously or with assignments on those days.
For super minimum days, teachers only need to synchronously teach from 9:00 to 10:15. We ask that you provide the students with assignments or pre-recorded lessons for the remainder of the instructional minutes.
For early dismissal Wednesdays please honor the schedule and teach in the morning from 9:00-10:15 and in the afternoon from 12:15-1:45. We ask that you provide the students with assignments or asynchronously pre-recorded/independent work lessons for the remainder of the instructional minutes.
For the first Friday's of the month please honor the schedule and teach in the morning from 9:00-10:15 and in the afternoon from 12:15-1:45. We ask that you provide the students with assignments or asynchronously pre-recorded/independent work lessons for the remainder of the instructional minutes. On this day, teachers will be free at 1:55 p.m. once all professional duties have been completed.

District Reopening Plan: from Dr. Price
Dear Lennox Students, Families, and Staff,
We look forward to starting our 2020-2021 school year by providing students a quality education within a secure and supportive environment; promoting all students’ academic excellence, social growth and responsible decision making;and ultimately preparing our students to lead productive lives in a diverse global community.
The year ahead is full of challenge and promise. The challenge is to do what we
have always done despite using a different medium and learning in a virtualspace. The promise is that by the end of the year, students, parents, and staff
will see the value of what has been explored and taught and will realize that
despite obstacles, there has been personal growth and discovery.
Now more than ever, our Lennox School District educators and leaders have
diligently worked to prepare the best possible education for our students while
keeping safety our top priority. This plan has been established with guidance for
educators provided from federal, state, and local authorities as well as our
Board of Education. Starting the year using distance education allows the safest
environment possible to eliminate COVID-19 transmission.
I want to thank you each beforehand for your extraordinary efforts including
students, parents, faculty, staff, employee organizations, administration, andboard members. With dedication, innovation, passion and patience, we will get
through this together.
Let’s have a successful and safe school year!
Sincerely,Dr. Scott Price

Teacher Key Pick Up Schedule (TENTATIVE)
Please be aware that we may need to cancel the key pick up or change this as LTA Negotiations are taking place to ensure the safety of our staff when they come to campus. However, we do want to get a head start on scheduling a time for the staff to pick up their keys. Again, please be flexible as this may change.
**REMINDER WE ARE ALL PRACTICING SOCIAL DISTANCING, WE MUST ALL WEAR A MASK AND NOT CONGREGATE IN ANY SIZE GROUP WHILE ON CAMPUS**
Use Sign UP GENIUS Below to select a time to pick up your keys from Leslie. The form and keys will be prepackaged so that there is little contact as possible. Please make sure that you are wearing a mask and there is 6 feet or more between you and other staff members while you are on campus at all times.

Teacher Resources/Materials Survey:
We need your feedback on the necessary materials and resources that will be needed to help and support our students while they learn from home. Each teacher will receive $175 for your classroom budget. Additionally the district will continue to provide "Google Classroom" and add "Seesaw" to support the instruction. Our school site will need to add additional resources and materials to our Title I budget that has not been distributed yet. However, I would like to get a jump start in getting your feedback so that when the budgets are sent out, we will be ready to create a P.O. Thanks for taking time during your summer break to complete this survey.

Thank You Amazing Staff
This year was filled with many surprises. We end the school year with some unknowns, but we do know this for sure. Our entire Jefferson Staff is the very best in the District. We are grateful for your hard work, dedication, and most of all love for your students. Thank You Staff!
I also want to acknowledge Mr. Chavez. He did an amazing job leading this wonderful school while I was on medical leave. Mr. Chavez continued our core values both at home and school by ensuring that every child in every home/classroom achieved success. We are excited for Mr. Chavez's new chapter in life with his new position as a Principal. Additionally, I want to thank Emily for all her hard work as she supported the office and Mr. Chavez. We are so lucky to have her on our team!
These last four months have been a challenge for everyone, specifically, our teachers. Each of you flipped your classrooms from a physical space on campus into an innovative, imaginative and most of all a caring environment from your very own home in order to educate our students. We know that it was not easy to juggle your jobs and support the education of your children at home! Our kids are very lucky to have amazing teachers like you!
Our next school year is set to start on August 19, 2020. As things continue to change over the summer, we will continue to send home information using your Lennox Email. Keep your eye out for upcoming emails!

SELPA Special Ed Program at Jefferson
The District will be bringing back our Special Ed students that were in the Los Angeles County SELPA Program. Our school was identified to house the Functional Skills and Behavior Program at our site. Our proximity to the district and child centered philosophy made us the perfect choice! This is a shared program, both the District and the School Site will support these amazing students when they come to us in the fall. The District will provide support to the program, but the school will house all the registration, attendance, IEP, and Administrative Support. As the Program develops, I will continue to keep you posted. Additional support was provided to assist our students. Mr. Ruben Rodriguez, our current Psychologist, will be working at our school 5 days a week. We are still waiting to see if our Assistant Principal will be back filled. Again, I will keep you posted as we get the information.
