There averages is 1000 tornadoes in one year nationwide.

Lightning is a Electric current up in a cumulonimbus cloud or thunderstorm cloud. Way up in the sky many small bits of ice bump into each other as they move around in the air. All of the callisions create a eletrictrical charge.
