Meet Your ELL Team!
After graduating from the University of North Texas in 1991, I began my career in education as an ESL teacher in Dallas ISD. I worked downtown on Ross Avenue and taught students from Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, China, Thailand, Mexico and South America. As a young teacher, the experience of the cultures, families and community in Dallas was powerful and life-changing. After teaching in DISD, I also had the opportunity to teach ESL students in Alief ISD, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD and Lewisville ISD. I am Reading Recovery trained and currently working on my M.Ed Bilingual graduate degree at Dallas Baptist University. This is my 23rd year in education and my 11th year as a Language Acquisition Specialist in LISD. I love my job, the teachers, students and families I serve!
Please welcome Diane Shank as our new ELL paraprofessional! Diane has a B.S. in business from the University of Dallas and a
M. Ed in play therapy from the University of North Texas. She worked in the business field for 12 years and then decided she wanted to work with children. She spent five years teaching at a Montessori school in Farmers Branch and then was a stay-at-home mom for several years after that. Diane has been married for 34 years and has a 12 year-old daughter, Kyra. Kyra attends Creek Valley Middle School and plays the euphonium in the Honor Winds Band. Diane is also mom to a standard poodle, King. Please say hello to Diane when you see her in the hallway and welcome her to B.B. Owen and Stewart's!

ELL Hot Topics
Did you know that putting your lesson content or key vocabulary to music will make it more comprehensible to your ELLs? Try using the melody of the songs Are You Sleeping?, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, This Old Man and other familiar songs. Guide students to summarize key content and vocabulary into phrases that fit the lyrics of the song. It's a fun way for your students to practice what they are learning!
Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall (to the tune of This Old Man)
Winter, spring, summer, fall
Winter, spring, summer, fall
There are seasons, four in all.
Weather changes, sun and rain and snow,
Leaves fall down and flowers grow.
Winter, spring, summer, fall
There are seasons, four in all.
Look outside and you will see
Just what season it will be!
