Tips and Tricks for Office 365

Staff had the opportunity to explore different Office 365 applications and see how they can be used in the classroom.

OneNote Classroom

OneNote Class Notebook is an app that helps you set up OneNote in your class. This app will create a class notebook, which includes three types of sub-notebooks: Content Library, Collaboration Space, and private student notebooks.

OneNote Class Notebook Activity

  • Log into Office 365 on the web
  • Go to the App launcher and click on OneNote Classroom
  • Create a OneNote Classroom Notebook. Name it Sample - Last Name (ex. Sample Jones)
  • Add the following students to your notebook:
  • Uncheck the Quizzes section and add a Research section to your notebook
  • Download the OneNote Classroom Add in when you are done
  • Add resources to the Content Library in your OneNote Classroom
  • Distribute your resource page to the student notebooks using the Class Notebook tab

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a platform that combines workplace chat, meetings, notes, and attachments. This is a great tool to collaborate with other teachers.

Microsoft Teams Activity

  • Log into Office 365 on the web
  • Go to the App launcher and click on Teams
  • Create a new Team. Name it Sample - Last Name (ex. Sample Jones)
  • Add the following users to your team:
  • Start a new conversation. Let the rest of your team know how excited you are to have set up your first team
  • In the Files section of your team, add a new folder and name it Resources
  • Add a document to that folder that you feel would be a good resource for the members of your team
  • Use the calendar feature in Teams to schedule a meeting one hour from now

Microsoft Sway Activitiy

  • Log into Office 365 on the web
  • Go to the App launcher and click on Sway
  • Create a new Sway. Title it Sample - Last Name (ex. Sample Jones)
  • Add a background image to your Sway using either one of the preset backgrounds offered by sway or your own image.
  • Add a Heading to your sway. Type Point 1 in the field of your Heading.
  • Choose any two of the following elements to add to your Sway:
    • Text
    • An Image
    • Audio
    • An Embedded element
  • Add any of the following Groups of images to your Sway:
    • Automatic
    • Stack
    • Comparison
    • Slideshow
    • Grid
  • Create a share link for your Sway so that you can share it with people that do not have an Office 365 account
  • Share the link with other members of your team

Microsoft Forms

With Microsoft Forms, you can create surveys, quizzes, and polls, and easily see results as they come in. When you create a quiz or form, you can invite others to respond to it using any web browser, even on mobile devices. As results are submitted, you can use built-in analytics to evaluate responses. Form data, such as quiz results, can be easily exported to Excel for additional analysis or grading.

Microsoft Forms Activity

  • Log into Office 365 on the web
  • Go to the App launcher and click on Forms
  • Create a new Form. Call it Sample - Last Name (ex. Sample Jones)
  • Provide directions for the Form in the "Enter a description" field
  • Add a multiple choice question with four choices to the Form
  • Add a multiple answer question with four answer choices to the form (Hint: In order to create a multiple answer question you have to start with a multiple choice question)
  • Add a text question to your form. Adjust the question so that the respondents have the ability to provide a longer answer
  • Add a Rating Question to your form. Change the levels of the question from 5 to 10. Change the symbol from a star to a number
  • Add a Date question to your form. In the text field type Select a date
  • Go back and make two of the questions in your Form required
  • Create a link for your Form so that anyone with a link can respond to the Form

PowerPoint Mix

Office Mix is a free extension to PowerPoint that makes it easy to turn your PowerPoint presentations into interactive online lessons and share them with your students and colleagues in OneNote, on the web, or in your learning management system. With Office Mix, you can add: Audio and video narration.

PowerPoint Mix Activity

  • Use the following link to download Office Mix onto your PC (Note: Be sure to sign in with your work account):
  • This will launch PowerPoint on your desktop
  • Once PowerPoint is Launched Click File/New to create a new blank SlideShow
  • Add content to your slide show
  • Click on the Mix tab on your ribbon in PowerPoint
  • Click on the Slide Recording button to record your current slide. Add ink notes to the slide recording
  • Add a new slide. Click on the Quizzes Videos Apps button to add a quiz (Note: You may need to open the App Launcher to see different quiz Apps)
  • Add a new slide. Click on the Screen Recording Button the record your screen (Note: This will record whatever program is opened below PowerPoint)
  • Publish your video to Office 365. Please select the Professional Development Channel when prompted

Office Lens

Office Lens trims, enhances and makes pictures of whiteboards and documents readable. Office Lens can convert images to editable Word and PowerPoint files too.

Office Lens Activity

  • Use Office Lens to scan an image of text
  • Export the text into the Immersive Reader tool
  • Use the Immersive Reader tool to change the size of the text
  • Use the Immersive Reader tool to have the text read out load
  • Export the text into a Word Document
  • Save the Word Document into the OneDrive
  • Open the Word Document online
  • Use the immersive reader to review the document
  • Using the Immersive text tool break the words up by syllables
  • Use the immersive text tool to change the color of different parts of speech in the passage.
