6th Grade - Unit 1, Week 5
Root words and context clues can help you understand the meaning of unknown words in text.
What are root words?
Root words are the basic parts of words that give the word its meaning.
What are prefixes and suffixes?
Prefixes and suffixes are words parts that are added at the beginning and end of a root word that change the word's meaning.
How can this help the reader?
The reader should find the root word by taking off any prefixes or suffixes. Then, he or she should think about what they know about the meaning of the root word and combine that with the meaning of the prefix or suffix.
