This week, we introduced new books to our babies. Did you know that language and literacy development begins in the first three years of your babies' life? The important thing to remember now, is that it is not developmentally appropriate to attempt to formally teach our babies how to read, this can actually lead to negative feelings in older children towards books and reading as they can learn to associate reading with failure. What IS important are the interactions between caregiver and baby- a lap to snuggle in and a book that is easy for small hands to turn the pages in. The words on the pages aren't as important as your interaction of pointing at pictures together and talking to your baby. For more information, here is a helpful handout:
