Fall Play Information
An Evening of Comedy at City High
(Iowa City, Iowa- 10/01/2018)
Charlie Chaplin once said, “A day without laughter is a day wasted.” Nobody wants to waste these beautiful fall days, so come laugh with City High Drama in An Evening of Comedy--a showcase of seven short comedic plays on October 26-28.
The short, comedic pieces range from a two-minute monologue about a dead cat (Rosa’s Eulogy by Richard Strand) to a 36-minute play that offers a hilarious and heartbreaking look at the madness of auditioning and the actors who brave the process for the perfect part (The Audition by Don Zolidis). City High Drama has also been invited to perform Zolidis’s play at the Iowa Thespian Festival at UNI in Cedar Falls on Nov. 9th.
Another two-minute piece, Ties That Bind by Eric Coble will keep you laughing in a fast-paced, physical vaudeville act where a man’s entire life is comically told in two minutes.
Controlling Interest by Wayne Rawley is a ten-minute piece that takes a poke at the corporate world. In this underage corporate boardroom comedy, eight-year-old men/boys make a business deal to finally like girls -- and to stop eating their boogers.
Playwright Adrienne Dawes explores the connections between beauty and identity when two female patrol officers try to prevent Rebekah, a multi-racial teenager from cutting off her hair. Aptly named, Heritage, Her-i-tage, & Hair-i-tage, the six-minute satire will bring much laughter and contemplation of societal conceptions of African-American beauty.
Most people have experienced at least one bad date in their lifetime, so the hilarious compilation of mishaps on a series of blind dates in Check, Please by Jonathan Rand will resonate with many. A bad date can seem like an eternity, but these twenty minutes of laughter fly by.
Speaking a different language can prevent people from completely understanding each other. However, David Ives in The Universal Language proves that language barriers can be overcome when a teacher who only speaks “Unamunda,” the language he created, successfully teaches the language to a young woman. The 15 minutes of “verbal pyrotechnics” create the language of true love.
City High Drama’s collection of plays in An Evening of Comedy will take the stage October 26th and October 27th at 7:30pm, and October 28 at 2:00pm in Opstad Auditorium at City High School. The auditorium is located at 1900 Morningside Drive in Iowa City. Ticket prices are $6 for students and $10 for adults. Tickets can be purchased in the City High Main Office from October 22-26 during regular business hours, or at the Opstad Auditorium box office beginning 30 minutes before each performance. Seating is general admission.
