EMBRACE
Embrace
Embrace: an act of accepting or supporting something willingly or enthusiastically
Curriculum:
The Egg Harbor Township Title 1 Services has adopted the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention : Please watch this short introductory video about the Fountas and Pinnell literacy instruction :
https://www.fountasandpinnell.com/intro/
The design of the program is targeted instruction with fiction and nonfiction high interest stories on the students tested reading level.
How do we determine reading levels? Students are benchmarked (tested on their reading level) twice per year by the regular education teacher and weekly by a Title 1 teacher if the student is chosen for the LLI services. Once the student is identified for services a letter designates their placement.
Students are then placed in small group instruction five days per week , currently (hybrid) 32 minute sessions with students at their same reading abilities.
Emphasis is placed on three areas, Within the text: the ability to summarize important events in a story, about the text: character analysis, author purpose and beyond the text: recognizing genre and supporting this definition with examples from the story, self to text, how the story may relate to a student and text structure (compare/contrast, descriptive, sequential, problem solution) and text features (sidebars, captions, headings, glossary, charts, diagrams)
Lessons are designed to overlap and there is an at level book and an easy book every two sessions. Heavy introduction and book walk are done at the beginning of each short story.

Response to Intervention
By now, you have heard the term Response to Intervention or RtI instruction. What exactly is RtI and why are we calling out Title 1 teachers interventionists now? Letters go home to families to inform them that their children are eligible for Title 1 services. As parents, we trust that getting additional support will help our children solidify their foundational skills as well as obtain new tools to close any gaps in instruction. But, how is that going to happen? Good things happen in threes when it comes to Response to Intervention. The three components of a successful Response to Intervention program include Tiered Instruction and Intervention, Ongoing Student Assessment, and Family Involvement.
Tiered Instruction and Intervention: The RtI Support System
Tier 1: High Quality and Authentic Classroom Instruction
Tier 2: Targeted, Small Group Instruction
Tier 3: Targeted, Small Group Instruction
As a Title 1 student, your child receives instruction on all three levels. Students receive Tier 1 when explicit instruction is given to the entire class. Tier 2 instruction occurs when students are pulled by their teacher into a small group to take part in Guided Reading. These materials are used to support instruction on the child’s reading level. Finally, Tier 3 instruction happens in a small group setting where students are pulled into an intensive, instructional period and receive individualized attention. Below is a link to illustrating the difference between Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction from the publisher of our instructional materials.
