Tools for Reading

Throughout the district, there are many tools for reading that are available to ALL students.

Kurzweil 3000 Firefly

Kurzweil 3000 firefly is a tool available to ALL students that can support reading comprehension and written production. Kurzweil has a text to speech feature that can read documents to students. It also has additional supports, such as highlighters, dictionaries, and picture dictionaries to support comprehension and study skills. In addition, Kurzweil can support written production by offering word prediction, graphic organizers, and text to speech.

ALL Students and teachers in Humble ISD have Kurzweil accounts.

Teachers- go to and select "forgot password". You will then be prompted to enter your email address. An email will be sent to your junkmail with your username and instructions for changing your password.

Students- Contact the SPED Key Contact or ALT at your campus. They should have a list. If students are not on the list. Please contact Elizabeth Sampson.

Rewordify is a free on-line tool that can be used to simplify text from on-line sources.


How do we determine appropriate reading accommodations for students? The Universal Protocol for Reading Accommodations (UPAR) is a tool that helps determine what accommodation a student requires.
