Monday Mission: Week of October 3rd
Each week, we challenge students, staff, and parents to a "Monday Mission." These missions are aimed at increasing relational capacity, modeling good social skills, and keeping all members of the Dix Street family connected. Give them a try and encourage your child(ren) to take part in our "Monday Missions!"
Student, Staff, & Parent Mission: Level Up Week. Pick one thing that you need to accomplish this week that normally takes just your average effort to complete and instead give it your ALL! Give it your best effort. Find a person this week, let them know what you are going to level up on, and ask them to hold you accountable to it!

CKH September Leadworthy Trait: Empathy
How to Teach Children Empathy
Model empathy
Any time you want to teach a skill to a child, it’s important to model it yourself. This way, the child understands what empathy looks like, sounds like, and feels like. The more children receive empathy, the more likely they are to offer it to others.
Discuss emotions
Talk openly about emotions rather than dismissing or ignoring them. Make it clear that all emotions are welcome, and learn to manage them in a healthy way through discussion and reflection.
Help out at home, in the community, and/or globally
Helping others develop kindness and caring. It can also give children the opportunity to interact with people of diverse backgrounds, ages, and circumstances, making it easier to show empathy for all people.
Praise empathetic behavior
When your child shows empathy for others, praise the behavior. Focusing on and encouraging empathetic behavior encourages more of it in the future.
DSE is a Schoolwide Title 1 School!
Dear Families,
Each year, Dix Street Elementary holds a meeting to inform families about our Title I programming. At this meeting, parents have an opportunity to provide feedback on the program and our parental involvement plans. We will hold our Annual Title I meeting virtually this year.
To participate virtually, we ask that you complete the steps below by September 26, 2022, so we can review your feedback at our next Continuous Improvement Meeting.
Step 1
Watch the video below. The video gives some background information on Title I and discusses three important documents that we ask you to review.
Step 2
Review the following three documents:
Step 3
After watching the video and reviewing the documents above, please complete this brief survey to provide any feedback on the documents. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions about our Title I program.
Thank you for participating in our Virtual Title I Meeting. This feedback is important to our school, and we appreciate your time.
Sincerely,
Mark VanderKlok
Dix Street Elementary, Principal
IMPORTANT! Meal Charges Return for This School Year
For the last two years, schools were able to provide free breakfast and lunch due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, free meals are ended at the end of last school year.
Starting with the 2022-23 school year, regular meal prices will be charged to student lunch accounts and the costs need to be covered by families. However, you may still qualify for free or reduced meals!
We are asking ALL families to take a few moments and fill out the federal assistance form. This can be filled out online or on paper. Here is the link to fill out online. A paper copy has also been provided to your child in their welcome letter.
If you have any questions, please contact Julie Guthrie, Otsego Food Service Coordinator, at jguthrie@otsegops.org or 269-694-7447.
Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up
A few Key reminders for pick up and drop off.
1. Please do not park in a parking spot.
2. Stay in your car and allow your child to enter your vehicle curb side.
3. If you are a part of the 3:40 Pick-up line do not enter until you are waved in by a staff member.
4. Only walking parents should be picking their child up in the southwest corner. NO parking and leaving your vehicle to pick a student should happen along Dix Street.
For more detailed information regarding drop-off and pick-up, visit THIS LINK.
Again, we really appreciate your patience.
EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION
It is extremely important to have up-to-date contact information available for each student. When emergencies arise, we need to be able to contact parents/guardians. This is also the contact information that is used for school closures and district updates.
Please log in to the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to check that your contact information is current and to make any necessary changes. If you need assistance or login information for the Parent Portal, please contact the Dix Street OfficeThank You!
