Chancellor Charger Weekly Update
News You Can Use for the Week of December 14, 2020
From the Principal
Greeting Chancellor Chargers,
Winter Break is a week away and although COVID-19 continues to be at forefront of many of our minds, I thank you for entrusting your students to us. Students continue to follow COVID protocols in the building and are respectful and courteous to one another and the staff. We are a week away from the end of the second marking period. Thank you parents and guardians for responding to my plea for help in getting our students to follow through with submitting work. Many students have been working hard to submit work this past week. Students still have this upcoming week to submit work. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact your students' teachers. This week is also a holiday spirit week. Students are invited to participate as long as the clothing worn is school appropriate. Friday is an early release day. Have a wonderful week!
Leading the Charge!

CHHS Choir
Congratulations to Mrs. Miller and the Chancellor Choirs. 28 students from Chancellor High made District Chorus. In addition, we had 3 students score number 1 in their section and 5 additional students scored within the top 4 in their respective sections. These students really worked hard for this, and it's especially significant as a large number of them are 100% virtual and never got to interact with (sing for) their teacher in person. Congratulations to the following students:

Athletics Update - Revision
VHSL will not require masks to be worn in games and practices
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – On December 10, the VHSL announced that it “is requiring each school to follow the recommendations of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)” that students and coaches wear masks while participating in sports. This requirement was issued in response to information that the Governor’s Requirement to Wear Face Coverings would include such a provision. However, EO 72 when issued stated that Face Coverings requirements “do not apply to … individuals exercising or using exercise equipment.”
“VHSL apologizes for any confusion created by its original release,” said VHSL Executive Director, Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun. “We ask the public to understand that it is the first mission of VHSL to make sure that athletics are conducted in a safe and healthy environment, and it was that desire that motivated the original decision.”
Accordingly, VHSL is rescinding its “requirement” that face coverings be worn during training and competition and is reissuing its guidance to conform with the intent of EO 72 that face masks are “strongly encouraged” but not required. Each school may continue to exercise its discretion and judgment as to safety steps within its athletics programs as it pertains to face coverings.
Thank you for your understanding of the change in the mask-wearing policy.

Students have the opportunity to interact with colleges and employers from our area, as well as across the state. This year, we have revamped this event to accommodate our current climate.
The sessions will be open to both students and parents/guardians. The event will consist of five sessions designed to provide families with valuable information that will help them with college and career planning.
Once families register, they will receive an email from us including the Google Meet link for each session. I have also attached a copy of the flyer that we are sending out. Please help us share this information, and feel free to encourage your students to attend.
Here are descriptions for the sessions:
5:00-5:20 - Juniors: What are Your Next Steps?
Each year, our school counseling department partners with our English teachers to provide our Juniors with pertinent information regarding college preparation. During this session, parents will receive insight on the information that has been provided. Students and families will also be provided with additional details and tips on how to effectively use your Junior year to plan for Senior year. We will share information regarding the SAT/ACT, college exploration, college visits, and other important topics.
5:25 - 5:55 - Resources for Interviewing
A representative from our Career and Technical Education department will facilitate this session in which students will receive tips on acing the interview process. Students will learn how to properly prepare for an interview as well as how to present their best selves to a potential employer.

A representative from Germanna Community College will provide our families with valuable information regarding college resources for students with disabilities. Students and parents will receive information that will assist them in a successful transition to college.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
As we begin the final week of the first semester, I thank you for your continued patience and support. We have completed a total of 16 weeks of instruction since August (8 distance learning and 8 hybrid in-person).
Below are a few brief reminders as we look to the week ahead:
Announcements & Reminders
After hearing feedback from our teacher advisory, parent leaders and community, we will be maintaining our current schedule as set forth in the instructional calendar through this Friday heading into winter break. We are monitoring the potential for inclement weather in the middle of the week.
January 4th, the first day following winter break, will be a full hybrid-in person learning day instead of a ½ day as currently scheduled.
Please keep in mind that there can always be decisions made at a state level or inclement weather that can potentially alter our schedule moving forward. However, at this time, we are not making any other adjustments to the published instructional calendar.
As a reminder, our COVID-19 Dashboard is updated weekly and can be viewed in the Return to Learn section on each school’s website or by clicking this link: SCPS COVID-19 Dashboard. Also on our webpage is a link to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Dashboard. This site provides data and statistics regarding COVID-19 positivity rates and cases per 100,000 by locality, region, and state.
This past Thursday, December 3rd, we met with our Parent Volunteer Leaders representing school PTA/PTO presidents. As we did with the Parent Advisory, we engaged the group in a discussion regarding the development of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 school division budget. Following a short summary of the process and timelines, parent representatives were given the opportunity to weigh in on preliminary thoughts on upcoming budget priorities as well as information needed for better understanding of the system budget.
Some individual hotspots are still available. We have provided about 800 to families throughout the county and have approximately 100 left. The mobile hotspots have been placed in the following location parking lots throughout the county:

One week to go before Winter Break! Stay safe!
