Mid-Year Orientation K-5th Grade
Thank you for joining our school community!
Please look through the resources, links and videos collected below to learn more about how to communicate with your teachers and engage in learning at FLEX.
Online school is different. Give your family time to adjust and learn all the new tools and systems. There is no need to worry about getting everything figured out in the first week. Our school staff are here to help you as your student and learning coach get settled into new schedules and learning routines.

Important daily habits
What should I do on a school day?
Log into Canvas
Hit attendance button (You must first be logged into Google with your BSD account to gain access to this form)
Begin working … this may mean looking at the calendar, checking out your teacher’s pacing guide or going straight into FLVS lessons (Your teacher will help you with suggestions on a daily plan)
Show up to meetings with my teacher (I can find these on my calendar in Canvas)
Use the Canvas inbox to message my teacher if I have questions or need help outside of scheduled meeting times
BSD student account
The username for this account is the six digit student ID number followed by @bsd48.org
Example: 123456@bsd48.org
If your student was enrolled in a BSD school earlier this year, their password will be the same.
If your student is new to the district or has forgotten their password, you can locate the original password in ParentVue under Student Information at the very bottom. If the password was ever changed, you need to request a reset by emailing flex-support@beaverton.k12.or.us.
Canvas
Canvas is our learning management system where students can see their assignments, manage due dates on a calendar, turn in assignments, message with teachers and see graded work and feedback.
All parent/guardians with an active ParentVue account can also log into Canvas here with the same username and password. The parent/guardian account is an 'observer' account which gives access to the student's courses, student calendar and access to grades & feedback from teachers. Parents have their own inbox where they can message with any teacher associated with a course their student is enrolled in.
Videos to help get started:
*For students using iPads, please use Safari or Chrome rather than the Canvas app.
Logging in on a Chromebook or computer
Sending messages through Canvas Inbox
Video Meetings
The teachers at FOS use video meetings to check in with students around both academic and social or emotional needs.
With all students progressing through the lessons at different speeds, the meetings with teachers are not a whole-class lesson. Elementary teachers do whole group read alouds and class meetings. Video meetings are mainly used for small groups and for one-on-one instructional coaching.
Middle & High School students can connect with each subject teacher during help sessions on an A/B schedule or during advisory on every B day. Students should also request individual sessions as needed with their teachers.
Florida Virtual
Florida Virtual is the curriculum our K-5 grades use. The lessons can all be seen from within the Canvas courses.

Attendance
Teachers will track attendance for students every day
In Canvas, students have a form to fill out each day that is called "Attendance"
Please fill out the form to be counted as being present (Must be logged into student BSD Google first to access the form)
If you forget, or if you are engaging in school in the evening (since we are a FLEXible school), simply send a message to your teacher through Canvas to let them know.
To report your student’s excused absence (e.g. if your student is ill and will not be engaging in schoolwork that day)

If you received an automated phone call or email stating your student was absent:
Login to StudentVUE or ParentVUE to view the specific class absence.
Then:
Message your teacher to check-in
Call the main office 503-356-3720 (wait for prompt for attendance), OR
Respond to the automated email.
Schedule for Success
With FLEX, your school schedule can be whatever best fits your family! We have seen this work beautifully for many families already! Some tips for success when planning your school schedule are listed below:
Make a schedule, adjust as necessary but try to keep it consistent. It can be easy to think “We’ll just fit it in where we can”, unfortunately this often leads to inconsistency, which makes it hard for students to stay engaged and focused.
A graphic organizer or visual schedule can be very helpful. In a classroom, the teacher manages a lot of the executive functioning and transitions from one activity to the next. Students may need your support in this.
Set clear expectations
Consider what is developmentally appropriate for your student. As adults, we may think. “Let’s just whip through these lessons”, but it is normal for children to struggle with focus. Setting a timer and scheduling movement breaks throughout the day is important. Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint.
REACH OUT. If you are struggling to find a schedule that works for you or are encountering other barriers, please reach out to your student’s teacher or school counselor. We are more than happy to help! We can work with you and share ideas that have worked for other families and students.
Who is your student's counselor
On your student's Canvas Dashboard you will see a course titled "FOS Elementary Students". Please take a moment to explore this course, as this is how your student's school counselor will post announcements, resources and counseling lessons centered around social-emotional well-being. The lessons provided here are not graded but encouraged.
