Celebrated from September 15 to October, National Hispanic Heritage Month honors the rich cultural heritage and extraordinary contributions of Hispanic Americans from Central and Latin America, Spain, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
At RJ, our students have opportunities to learn more about the contributions of notable Hispanic Americans during Hispanic Heritage Month with a collection of exciting lessons, books, and Latin history activities/guides that bring the richness of these cultures alive for young learners.
Covering a wide range of fields, from science to sports to politics, students can discover the inspiring contributions made by notable Hispanic Americans. The list includes Lin-Manual Miranda, Americo Paredes, Oscar De La Hoya, Rita Moreno, Ellen Ochoa, and many others.
Here's a link to Google Slides to learn more at home about the valuable contributions made by notable Hispanic leaders and difference makers:

RJ Attendance Information: Absences Add Up!
Attendance @ School Matters! RJ's Mission to Make EVERY school day count!
State Attendance Parameters for Parents:
- The state requires students to attend school for at least 90% of the days the class is offered. This part of the law is commonly referred to as "the 90% rule". The average school year is 180 days. So, your child can only miss 18 days of school before the 90% rule impacts his/her credit. Take special note that excused and unexcused absences count toward the total number of absences in regards to the 90% rule.
- The state also tells us that children must attend school unless there is a valid excuse explaining the student's absence. If your child is out for a doctor's appointment or an illness, be sure to send a note so that the absence can be excused. You can send notes for your child to turn into the office OR you can directly contact our registrar/attendance clerk @ csarubbi@burnetcisd.net
- Should you need to sign-your student out early during the day, please have your ID.
- All parents/guardians will be asked to sign your student out as we are required to track student attendance and parts of day out of school. We will be able to code and excuse your child's early checkout with a doctor's note returned the next day.
- Excessive check-out earlies do affect student attendance and can accumulate for days missed from school.
Submitting an Absence Note?
- You can send your child with an absence note to turn-into the front office. There is an "absence note" box where all students can place their absence letters or doctor's notes.
- You can also scan in doctor's notes and/or send parent communication regarding your child's absences to our attendance registrar @ csarubbi@burnetcisd.net

BCISD Traffic Reminders for SGE & RJ Richey
Dear Parents,
As you may have noticed, the District and the Burnet Police have been working together the past few weeks to gather data and make adjustments to the traffic patterns at Shady Grove Elementary and RJ Richey Elementary, especially in the morning during drop off. Because both the traffic patterns for both campuses are interconnected, we have to take a holistic approach when addressing the issue. Below are a few reminders of things that will help make the traffic flow at both campuses work as efficiently as possible.
At RJ Richey Elementary and Shady Grove Elementary:
• As you enter the drive, please have your children prepared to exit the vehicle as quickly and safely as possible on the right (passenger) side of the vehicle.
• Please pull forward as far as possible, leaving as little space as safely possible between cars before unloading.
• After dropping off your children, please pull forward without leaving large gaps between cars, and be considerate by allowing people to merge as needed to exit.
For vehicles traveling from Shady Grove Elementary to RJ Richey Elementary:
• When leaving Shady Grove Elementary, please look for and follow the directions of the police officer stationed at 200 and 963.
• Please lower your speed to 20 mph while in the school zone on 963 when approaching the RJ Richey Elementary entrance drive (We have requested with TxDOT to formally change the school zone speed). This will allow more opportunities for cars to safely exit RJ Richey Elementary. School buses on 963 have also been instructed to travel 20 mph while in the school zone in front of RJ Richey Elementary.
• If you are driving past the RJ Richey Elementary drive entrance and exit, slow down enough to let a car or two exit from the drive.
• If you are entering the RJ Richey Elementary drive, please activate your right turn signal very early to let cars exiting RJ Richey Elementary know that you are turning right.
By everyone doing their small part, we can make the traffic flow easier for everyone. Thank you for your assistance!
Finally, a BIG thank you to our elementary staff members who are rock stars! Not only do they spend all day teaching classes, but they are working hard before school and after school making sure students safely load and unload buses and cars. Like the postal service, they are on duty rain or shine. Kudos to them!
Sincerely,
Burnet CISD
