What is happening in the music department?

School starts this week! That means that the first band rehearsals are quickly approaching.

The directors are working very hard to get things ready for our students. With all the changes to our program, please bear with us as we implement the changes. We will make every effort to get information to families as quickly as possible.

It's going to be a great year!

Required Books for Band Students

All band students need to have the following books for band rehearsals and Sectionals. These books will be charged through your child's Charms account. Please watch your account for these charges. All students MUST have these books.

4 th/5th Grade - Essential Elements Book 1 (should already have purchased from Quinlan and Fabish or still have from last year) and The Simple Rhythmatician ($6.95) - TOTAL $6.95 (as long as you have your Essential Elements Book 1)

6 th Grade- Essential Elements Book 2 ($9.99), Habits of a Successful Middle School Musician ($9.95) and The Simple Rhythmatician ($6.95) - TOTAL $26.89

7 th/8th Grade- Habits of a Successful Middle School Musician ($9.95) and The Simple Rhythmatician ($6.95) - TOTAL $16.90

When do rehearsals begin?

This bears repeating. These are the start days for band and information about the start date for choir.

BAND

INSTRUMENTS ARE NOT NEEDED FOR THE FIRST DAY OF REHEARSAL

Friday, August 24 First Day of Concert and Symphonic Band (7:00 – 7:30)

Monday, August 27 First Day of Cadet Band (7:50 – 8:20)

Tuesday, September 4 First Day of Beginning Band (7:50 – 8:20)

Remember students should be dropped off NO EARLIER than 6:40 at the Junior High and 7:35 at MIS. The exterior doors of the buildings will be locked until those times.

CHOIR

An informational meeting for new members will happen in the first few days of school. Rehearsals will start after Labor Day (please listen to announcements for information).

Change in Sectional Days for MIS Students

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to change the Sectional days for students at MIS. 5th Grade Cadet Band students will now have Sectionals on Tuesdays or Wednesdays and 4th Grade Beginning Band students will now have Sectionals on Thursday or Fridays.

The Sectional schedule is being finalized and will be distributed soon!

Marching Meteors Field Show Band Registration

We still need a few more students to join if we hope to run this extra curricular activity this year. If your child is a student at MJHS, please consider joining the Marching Meteors Field Show Marching Band. Currently, we only have 19 students signed up! We cannot field a show with that few people.

The Marching Meteors Field Show Band rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 4:00 culminating with a performance on October 13 at the Lincoln-Way Invitational Marching Band Championship at Lincoln-Way West High School.

We are in need of winds, percussion and guard members. If you know anyone not involved in the music program who may be interested in guard (spinning flags), please forward them the information.

What is an IBA Account?

You may hear the term IBA account and wonder "what is that?" An IBA account is an Individual Bank Account. Every student registered in Charms automatically has an account. Funds raised through IBA Fundraisers will be credited to your child's account and can be used to purchase any music related items such as booster fees, reeds, valve oil, and even music department trips, just to name a few!

IBA Fundraisers usually occur once per quarter. Keep watching for more information.

SPAMalot! (Young@Part) Auditions for this year's musical will take place in early November. Listen for announcements. Crew will not meet until approximately March. I will be looking for an Assistant Director and a Dance Captain. Those applications will be available in November.	This week's Sectional Schedule Band sectionals will be held weekly on a rotating basis during the school day at both MJH and MIS. This means that students should not have sectionals at the same time more than once or twice per quarter. As band is now an academic elective course, sectional attendance is mandatory and will be graded. Practice logs are due EVERY Sunday before midnight. Students should enter their time in the Charms Website. Private Lessons It is not required that Mokena music students take private lessons. It is true, however, that the vast majority of students who do not take private lessons tend to have improper playing habits, and never reach their full potential as musicians. SECTIONALS ARE NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR PRIVATE LESSONS. There are still many benefits of private instruction over full band rehearsal and small group sectionals.
