Peek At The Week
January 25, 2019
Team,
This week teachers were teaching, students were learning, data discussions were held, coaches were coaching and Administration was in classrooms. We saw some solid teaching, heard student responses to instruction which lended us to know that learning was happening. Those were the good things. We also uncovered some things that could be improved upon.
One teacher was ready for Data Talks over CBA ! and 2. This teacher used the shared document, could speak to specific students and what needed to change to capture them. During transition, halls were unmonitored. Two academic teachers were having data discussions. In one PLC, 2 out of 4 teachers were working the work, focused on Professional Learning. I am somewhat concerned about the inattention to nonnegotiable expectations being met. It is your responsibility as an educator to be prepared, met expectations for being on time and to read all emails. Information is given in many different ways, and we have seasoned faculty saying that they 'never knew about that'
We are in IR year 1. There are specific things that MUST be implemented due to this status and District/State expectations. Specifically, Goal Setting and use/teaching of Academic Vocabulary, as they are written in our Turn Around improvement Plan. It is not acceptable to not follow through with stated expectations. In fact, it's unprofessional.
Mrs. Stanley and myself have committed to instructional excellence at Shepherd Middle School. We will begin holding individual staff accountable for not being prepared for meetings, unprofessionalism and following our Schoolwide discipline plan. We really shouldn't have to. Folks, it's time to hold yourself accountable for what is needed for PLC's, Data Talks, Goal Setting and Professionalism.
Thank you to those who are prepared, professional and on time to work and class daily. Thank you for volunteering countless hours to sponsor our students. Thank you for ALL that you do...it's just time for us to tighten up on what is needed for us to be ONE AND DONE for IR.
Be Accountable for you!!

LOOK FOR'S in Walkthrough's- Non-negotiables; written in TIP
- Application of Academic Vocabulary- Invite your appraiser to your class to show us what you are doing!
- Goal Setting with Students, every 3 weeks, on Friday's- you can do this every Friday if you like, to lighten the number of student's you meet with...Teach them how to GET ONE MORE!
- Lesson Objective written on the board, lesson opened by saying what is to be done in class. Class learning outcome: What should students leave the class knowing?
Moving Bodies- Operations and Logistics
Hallway CHAMPS- Teachers out first, then students. The reason for this is because unsupervised students tend to be louder and put their hands on each other. They then take their disruptive behavior into the classroom. This will not help our IR situation. This is a NON-Negotiable. Teachers out first, then students.
CHAMP each transition in your classroom. This will help set the tone for for the expected behaviors!
Students need HALL PASSES when they leave your classroom. Don't be surprised if they are sent back because they have no pass!
Math Interventions within the school day start this week. Students who have Met/Mastered their previous year's STAAR Test, but are missing mastery of instruction for their current grade, will be pulled from an elective to work with their teacher for the next three weeks. Please check your email, as you will be notified by the Math Department as to who will be absent from your class T, W and/or Th. These students are not to be given zeroes for missed assignments due to intervention pull outs.
