The first time Burleson faced Granbury in volleyball, the Lady Elks felt they had let a victory slip away.
That wasn’t the case Tuesday night when the Lady Elks and Lady Pirates squared off to open the second-half of district 5-5A play.
Burleson got out to a fast start and never looked back as the Lady Elks swept Granbury, 25-16, 25-20, 25-21, at home.
The win forged a tie for first place in the district between the two squads at 7-1. Burleson (24-9) hosts arch-rival Centennial Friday night and plays at Mansfield Timberview Tuesday night.
The first time the team’s met, Granbury walked away with a five-game win. Since then the Lady Elks had reeled off six consecutive wins to enter Tuesday’s match.
Burleson defeated Arlington Seguin Friday night, 25-14, 25-12, 25-14, to close out the first-half of district play within a match of Granbury.
“We found some redemption tonight,” Burleson coach D’Anna Newton said. “The first time we played them they kind of caught us off guard and we didn’t play our best. It’s taken us the whole first-round of district but we came out and performed the way we should have in the first match against them.”
The Lady Elks didn’t give the Lady Pirates much breathing room most of the night.
In the second game, Granbury held an early 8-4 lead but the Lady Elks fought back to take the lead at 16-15 and eventually won by five points.
“Granbury is a tough team and if you let them get on a roll they will take advantage of it but we were able to perform tonight,” Newton said. “We served tough tonight and got them out of their game and were able to finish in three games tonight.”
The Lady Pirates seemed on the verge of rallying in the third game to force a fourth game but sophomore outside hitter Emily Rich was having none of that.
Rich finished off the match with a backline kill that was just in to give the Lady Elks the sweep. Rich had another big night with 16 kills, two aces and 12 digs.
Tuesday’s win was a team effort according to Newton.
Junior outside hitter Ellie Strebeck finished with nine kills and two blocks. Senior outside hitter Kenady Moore had six kills and sophomore middle blocker Emily White tallied five kills and four blocks. Sophomore setters Mia Smalls registered 31 assists and an ace. Freshman libero Emma Dustin had 15 digs and senior defensive specialist Kyra Smith had 11 digs.
“It was an all-round effort,” Newton said. “We were able to get the job done tonight and I’m very proud of them.”
Friday 10/5:

Lady Elks are now 8-1

Turnovers and mistakes got the best of Burleson Friday night in its annual “Hall of Fame/Boot Game” with the Centennial.
Spartans’ defense forced three turnovers, two of which led to touchdowns, and Burleson missed a couple of crucial first-half field goals as Centennial defeated the Elks, 21-7, at Burleson ISD Stadium.
Burleson still leads the series, 4-3. The Spartans win snapped a two-game Elks winning streak. The 28 points were the least total points scored in a game during the series. The Spartans 21 points were the least by a winning team in the series.
The Elks (5-1, 3-1) erased a 7-0 Centennial lead on their first possession of the second half. On third and three, quarterback Jacob Amador hit Jacob Moss for a 67-gain yard gain to the Centennial 1. Two plays later, Jarrett Austin took a swing pass from Amador for a 10-yard score.
The touchdown tied the game at 7-7 with 6:40 to play in the third quarter.
Amador and Moss had big nights for Elks. Amador completed 18 of 29 passes for 248 yards while Moss caught nine passes for 184 yards.
The Spartans answered back with an eight-play, 71-yard drive. Centennial did all on the ground. Four plays into the drive, starting quarterback Kyle Burns exited the game with an injury. Sophomore Hank Meyer entered the game and finished the drive. The Spartans went ahead 14-7 with 2:35 to play in the third quarter on a 36-yard run by Chris Mosley. Mosley ended the game with four carries for 83 yards.
Centennial’s defense made a big play on the Elks next possession when linebacker Darrell Williams intercepted an Amador pass and returned it 18 yards to the Elks 24. Six plays later, Meyer scored on a three-yard run to put the Spartans up 21-0 with 9:48 to play.
Burleson followed with a 16-play drive that didn’t result in points when Spartans defensive back David Robinson intercepted an Amador pass in the end zone.
The Elks got the ball back one more time but couldn’t score. This time Moss had the ball stripped away and Centennial’s Mykel Parker recovered the fumble. Centennial was then able to run out the clock to regain “The Boot.”
In the first half, Centennial’s first possession resulted in points when Burns found Jaylon Jackson open for a two-yard score and a 7-0 lead with 4:35 to play in the first quarter. Burns finished the game with 12 carries for 80 yards.
Burleson’s next two possessions slowed in Spartan territory and ended with missed field goals by Edgar Zaragoza. Zaragoza, who hit a 45-yard game-winning field goal last year, missed field goals of 32 and 34 yards.
