THE WEST MAIN BUZZ

BUZZWORTHY NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Greetings Parents/Guardians,

Can you believe we made it through the first six weeks of school? It has been a very busy school year thus far. Pre-kindergarten students have become acclimated to a new learning environment. Kindergarten through 5th grade students and teachers are getting more comfortable with our new Reading and Language Arts curriculum. All students have access to technology and the Fine Arts Academy is up and running. We also celebrated several holidays and events. The students wrote poems and made crafts for Grandparents Day. Teachers planned different activities to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and we had the honor of celebrating College Go Get It Week with the Superintendent's Executive Team and Campus Principals. Now that Fall is in the air, it promises an even busier second six weeks. Please be on the lookout for upcoming events and activities for the month of October. We have several forms of communication: DOJO, campus and classroom newsletters, and our campus website. Lastly, I want to THANK YOU for all your support. With your help, I know we can take our students to the "NEXT LEVEL".

Our staff is keeping our scholars engaged as we "Race to the NEXT LEVEL"

Vision, Hearing, and Spinal screenings are coming up

Vision and hearing screening will be conducted on Thursday, October 10, 2019 for all Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade students. Only 2nd and 4th grade students new to the district will undergo the screenings. All 5th grade girls will undergo spinal screenings on the same day. Trained screeners will check your child for signs of spinal problems like scoliosis.

The spinal screening is simple. Screeners will look at your child's back while she stands and bends. Students who fail the screening will be sent a letter so that you can follow up with a medical doctor. In preparation for the spinal screenings, 5th grade girls should follow these recommendations:

  • Bring shorts on the day of the exam
  • wear sports bra or two-piece swim top underneath their shirt on exam day
  • If the girl is wearing a sports bra or two-piece swim top, it is recommended that their shirts be removed for the exam

If you have any questions regarding the screenings, please feel free to reach out to Nurse Mitchell at 972-218-1551.
