The First Amendment

by:Jaylan Williams

Word for Word

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

My Version

All people have the right to say what they want.We all can believe in what we want to believe in.People have the right to gather together for a common cause. We as people can disagree with what we wish.We the people have the right to gather all types of information and share it with the public.

The Fist Amendment was created because of the government's neglect of basic freedoms.Everyone has their beliefs,no one can control that.People are always going to have something to say.People who are alike stick together. If someone dislikes something the so be it.Everyone wants to share news with each other.Without the First Amendment,America would be ruled with an iron fist.

Schenck vs. United States (1919)

Charles Schenck and Elizabeth Barr were writhing letters between themselves and others about WWI.They were going against the Espionage Act of 1917.They were charged with treason because of their espionage writings. The charges were dropped because they were proteced by the First Amendment with freedom of speech.
