The Lincoln Memorial
History
The Lincoln Memorial was built in 1914 - 1917 and designed by Henry Bacon and styled after a Greek temple and it's in Potomac Park, Washington D.C. Inside the building is a heroic statue of Lincoln by Daniel Chester French and two murals by Jules Guerin.
The Lincoln Memorial statue is 19 feet (5.8 meters) tall. The Lincoln Memorial was built with stone from several states, including Colorado, Indiana, and Georgia. Henry Bacon wanted the Lincoln Memorial to look like the Parthenon, an ancient temple in Athens, Greece. The building features 36 marble columns. Each column stands for a state in the union at the time of Lincoln's death in 1865.
