Taking a closer look at ELL students
Lets call her Sally
Sally is who I choose for my case study. Her spunky, happy and caring personality was contagious but yet her sadness, frustration and struggle is heartbreaking. Her parents only speak Spanish and that is the language she speaks with her brothers and sisters in at well. This year I could tell her language skills were going to make her academics a struggle and they did. We have done a countless number of assessments and interventions trying to boast her skills.
Beginning of the year writing sample.
As you can see she didn't use any punctuation or capital letters. When she sounded out words she substituted in the wrong sound to make the spelling not even close. Even though she knew she was struggling she always gave 100% She wanted so badly all year to be successful.
The most recent writing sample.
I have praised her for her hard work. She has come so far academically, and also has grown so much as a girl. Even though she will struggle in the years to come, her heart that so badly wants to succeed will push her through and help her get there!
She has come a long way with her writing. The basics of writing have come a long way. In the first writing there isn't any periods or finger spaces. It is obvious when she sounded out words she was flipping around different sounds. She has come a long way. She has can sound out words and spell them so much better than what she used to be able to.
