Keeping Your Brain Sharp with Sheryl Kaplan
Every day brings exciting new findings in brain research. We now know that the brain is “plastic” and that we all have the capacity to re-wire brain circuits and to grow new neurons throughout the lifespan. Today Sheryl will speak about ways you can take care of your brain (have a brain-healthy lifestyle) and some simple strategies to improve our ability to learn and remember new things.
Sheryl Kaplan is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Credentialed Prevention Professional with over 30 years of experience providing individual, family and group counseling for children, adolescents and adults. Ms. Kaplan was a school social worker employed by Capital Region BOCES for more than 26 years. During that time, she worked as a Student Assistance Counselor and Prevention Program Provider in elementary, middle and high schools across the Capital District. Ms. Kaplan is now a full time trainer and consultant who specializes in the application of brain-based research for social work and related professions.

Gong Bath Immersion Meditation
Gong Bath Immersion Meditation is an experience in which the sacred healing sounds of gongs and singing bowls bathe the participants with sustained waves of harmonic sound. It does not require a specific belief structure or discipline of practice. All one needs to do is to be present, allowing sound to bathe the body and carry the mind. The sounds of the gongs and singing bowls facilitate the movement of energy through the body, inviting a meditative space that allows for quieting of mental chatter, increased vitality, healing, expanded awareness and higher consciousness. The experience may be different for each person. Universal Sounds will create a clear and safe space supporting each individual's process and healing potential.
Wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or blanket and cushion or pillow -- anything that will facilitate your comfort.

Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body
At any age, there are lifestyle habits we can adopt to help maintain or even potentially improve our health. These habits may also help to keep our brains healthy as we age and possibly delay the onset of cognitive decline.
To help people age well, the Alzheimer’s Association® is offering the Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research program. This workshop covers four areas of lifestyle habits that are associated with healthy aging: cognitive activity, physical health & exercise, diet & nutrition, and social engagement.
In each area, we will discuss what we know, drawing on current research, as well as what we can do — steps to take now to improve or maintain overall health in each area.
