Community Based Medical Education Is....
What Community-Based Medical Education at JABSOM means...
That sea of white coats on campus at JABSOM was sure fun to see this week, as our MD 2021's hosted students from Stevenson Intermediate School. In a very cool partnership, the pupils get to hang out on campus with a med student, while the students practice talking to adolescents who could be their future pediatric patients. There were smiles everywhere. Thanks, Stevenson Intermediate!
OUR MEDICAL STUDENTS STOOD UP FOR COMPASSION THIS WEEK IN A NUMBER OF WAYS
University of Hawai'i medical students in the Gold Humanism Honor Society have spent all week in "Solidarity." Solidarity Week events are one way GHHS chapters around the country celebrate their dedication to ensuring compassionate; patient-centered care. Our students baked cookies and then delivered the treats to nurses and hospital staff as a way of saying, "Thank you for letting us be your medical students." (ANOTHER SURE SIGN WE ARE A COMMUNITY BASED MEDICAL SCHOOL AND PROUD OF IT!) They also made signs they shared on social media making the message clear that JABSOM and every place they provide care are safe spaces filled with love and compassion regardless of race, socioeconomic status, sexual identity, disease state, language, religion. Students, we will say it again, you are our SUPERHEROS in training!
"Vaccine hesitancy" as old as vaccines themselves, history shows
The measles crisis in the Pacific Northwest is current — but it is not new. Unwarranted fear of lifesaving vaccines has been around as long as vaccines have, we were reminded this week in a lecture by Emory University professor and infectious disease specialist Dr. Robert Gaynes.
