"Celebrating Superheroes!"

October 16, 2015

From the Principal's desk. . .

Dear Shady Brook Families,

I cannot believe that the first six weeks of school has already come to a close. We appreciate the partnerships you have created with us to ensure that your student has the best experience at Shady Brook Elementary. As we move into the second six weeks, please help us with in the following areas so that we can continue to have great things happen:

  • It is extremely important that your student is at school and in his or her seat by 8:00 a.m. in order to start the day of learning off right.
  • Remind your student to wash his or her hands with soap and water. We are coming upon the season of colds and flu. This will help your student to remain healthy so that he or she can make it to school each and every day.
  • If your student must have an appointment, please do your very best to have the appointment after school. Any time that your student misses during the school day is a time of instruction that is missed..

We feel privileged to work with your students daily. Again, please do not hesitate to let us know if you need anything.

Counselor's Corner

I just finished visiting classrooms for the 1st guidance lesson of the year! In Kinder, we did an introduction lesson learning about who the counselor is, and our 2nd lesson will be about bucket filling. In 1st-6th, we read the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud and talked about being bucket fillers vs. bucket dippers. A bucket filler is a person who is kind and does nice deeds for others, while a bucket dipper is mean to others. Students were able to complete a bucket filling activity, in which they were given a bucket page and were able to write one nice bucket filler word about every student in their class. Students were also challenged to do one bucket filler act (aka—an act of kindness) per day. I encourage you to talk with your student(s) about our lesson and how they can be bucket fillers.

Fall into Healthy Habits

As we head toward flu season, it is important to remember our healthy habits! Practicing good habits will help keep your student safe and in school. Let’s work together with our students and reinforce these ideas at home and school!

  • Hand washing! Encourage your student to wash hands before meals, after using the restroom and playing outside. Sing Happy Birthday twice while washing your hands to ensure that they are clean

  • Cover your mouth when sneezing and coughing

  • Throw away used tissues right after use

  • Avoid touching your eyes and mouth

  • Use hand sanitizers when soap and water are unavailable

  • And last but not least, be sure to get a good night's rest and healthy breakfast

Getting to Know our Staff...

Lisa Pickens, sixth grade science teacher, graduated from Texas Tech. Not surprisingly, science was her favorite subject when she was in school. She has lots of pets - 3 dogs, 3 cats and 2 chickens. Her hobbies include walking her dogs, watching movies and swimming. Some of her favorite things include country music, the author - Jerry Spinnelli and Buffalo Wild Wings. One interesting fact about Ms. Pickens is that she likes to sing, but says she's not good at it. Whether she is a good singer or not, we are so glad she is a part of our Shady Brook family.
