A New Year - New Reflections
This school year, our theme has been Passion and Purpose. I kept thinking about those two words as I took some time for reflection over break. It's been a challenging year so far, and at times I have lost sight of both of those words. My own personal ONE WORD for the year is Passion. I was reminded of a paragraph from one of my favorite books - The Passion Driven Classroom.
"Passionate learning is more than a fleeting moment of motivation and excitement...passion-driven learning involves more than liking what you do or the project you are working on. Passion is present when youhave a willingness to attend to the work when it's not so fun. Passion is present in your learning when you are willing to persevere across the obstacles you face in order to succeed at the learning. Does the learning you describe have attributes of courage, perseverance, tenacity, and a 'whatever it takes' feel to it?" (page 12)
This is a learning year for ELA, as it was with math last year. I encourage you to take some time to reflect, and consider how your passion for teaching, for kids, for literacy lights the way through the difficult parts of implementation. Go back to your core purpose. Why are you here? What do you believe about learning and what that experience should be for students? What new learning for yourself do you hope to embrace over the next semester? In a task that's overwhelming, what ONE THING can you commit to pursuing with all of your passion and purpose? What do you need from me, from Jen, from Maureen, and from your teams in terms of support, guidance, and encouragement to keep moving through the tough days?
At the end of the year, we're going to celebrate the amazing literacy learning that has taken place for our kids, and ourselves. I can't wait to continue this journey with you.
Happy 2016!
