Rick Hansen Public School

January Newsletter

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. I would like to say thank you to everyone for your support of the Scholastic Book Fair. It was a huge success with over $5000 in sales. The funds raised went towards the purchase of new books and future items for the Makerspace. I am planning to hold another book fair in the spring. Another big thank you for following up with students with overdue books.

A Vision for the Learning Commons

The Ontario Library Association published a document called Together for Learning School Libraries and the Emergence of the Learning Commons in 2010. This document identifies four key components of the Learning Commons. I use these components to guide what happens in the Rick Hansen Learning Commons as well as listening to ideas from staff and students. Below are the components and how some are being applied in the Learning Commons in the new year.

  • physical and virtual space - Transforming the seminar room into a green screening studio and creating an inquiry space in the LC in partnership with the intermediate classes.
  • equitable access - A new Learning Commons sign-up timetable accessible through Google Docs, extended opening times during recess and after school.
  • learning partnerships - I am very excited to continue partnering with staff and students. I hope to be able to attend your division meetings.
  • technology in learning - Technology, when used correctly, can inspire and connect teachers and students, and open up new ways of learning and sharing learning that can be more efficient, effective and engaging. There are so many new technologies it can be very overwhelming to choose the best tool to meet your and your students needs. The good news is that I can help you with selecting one or two tools that will help you accomplish your goals with your students. I hope to have the green screening studio up and running and would love to partner with a class. Get in touch!
