Judgement & Acceptance

Who's to Judge?

I feel that in today's society we are all so quick to judge. The first time we see someone we automatically think of what type of person they are. "He just looks dumb!" "Oh, she looks like a slut!", "I bet he's gay.", "He looks like a cool dude", "I think he's poor.", "She looks so basic.", "I can tell that they are weird." these are all examples of they types of things we think when we take our first look at them. We judge them so quickly because we don't want to take the time to meet them and learn what type of person they are and their interests. In stead of being lazy, and labeling people right away, we should take the time to get to know them and look past their outer appearance. You never know, you just might end up liking them.

Something that goes along with Judgement is acceptance. Instead of judging someone so quickly, we should learn to accept others for who they are. Judgment leads to gossip, and that could lead to bullying and sometimes even something worse. One way that we can prevent this judgement thing is by accepting the fact that everyone is different, even ourselves. Things like judging, gossiping, and bullying can cause internal pain, and can cause us to not be accepting to others, not even ourselves.

“We but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents. “ ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

This quote is saying how we are scared to be who we really are, because of the things people say or assume. When people judge you it makes you want to change who you are, usually to please others around you so that they can accept you.

"Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members. Society is a joint-stock company, in which the members agree, for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

The quote above says how we should not conform to the world by ignoring who we really are and changing ourselves to please others. If we reach out and accept others despite how they look or what we assume of them, then we would be able to be ourselves and enjoy life instead of feeling scared or misunderstood. Through this we can make friendships and other relationships. We can be ourselves and express ourselves how we chose, and that is a wonderful thing.
