Murray's Gifted Gab
May 2019
A Note From Mrs. Shook
The school year is starting to dwindle down, and with that we are in a flurry of concerts, performances, testing, and prep for the next school year. Our 8th graders will soon be transitioning to high school, it's time for all grades to select electives, and this Thursday evening we will talk about what classes are available for 7th graders to take next year.
Gifted students often experience emotional intensities, which can make this time of year stressful. "The pressures of school, friendship, family expectations, and the myriad activities [they] are involved in can all create more tension in [their lives]. This tension can translate to stress. Headaches, stomachaches, nervousness, anxiety, a short temper - these are all common reactions to stress" according to 101 Secrets for Gifted Kids. I often talk to students about their "hula hoop." Everything inside the hula hoop is what you can control and everything outside of the hula hoop is what you cannot. It's important for gifted kids to learn the difference and to learn to practice self care, find ways to relax, and learn to do deep breathing.
This week I will meet with the elementary and high school gifted specialists to transition our 6th and 8th grade students. As we move into the last weeks of school, please reach out if you have questions and/or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Shook
