Dear St. Bede School Families,


Welcome to the second half of the 2021-22 school year! I hope you and your children return to school rested and energized by the Christmas vacation. While I enjoyed spending time off with family and friends, eating way too much, and binge-watching a couple of shows on Netflix, I'm looking forward to having our students and staff return to school. The remainder of the school year promises to be great!


One of the things schools do following time off is re-establish and reteach routines, expectations, and behaviors. As we are refreshing and reteaching our students, it is a great time to remind you of some of the safety procedures here at St. Bede School:


  • Please pull as far forward as possible when dropping off or picking up your child(ren).
  • Be sure to have your child's number with you and displayed on your windshield.
  • Your child should leave or enter your car from the sidewalk or passenger's side of the vehicle, not the driver's side. No child should go into the parking lot area to enter a car without a parent or staff member. These procedures are for your child's safety.
  • Students are expected to arrive at the front doors before the 7:55 am bell every day and be in their classrooms by 8:00 am to be ready to participate in the daily morning prayers and morning classroom routines. If a child is tardy for any reason, the parent must accompany the child to the office and sign them in.
  • A parent is requested to contact the School Office by 8:15 am to report a student's absence. A recorded message or an email may be left at any time.


To further mitigate the potential spread of COVID, all schools within the Archdiocese of Chicago must suspend the operation of concession stands at athletic events until further notice. We will also prohibit spectators from bringing any food or drink into the gym until further notice.


Please join us to celebrate National Catholic Schools Week at St. Bede School! This year's Catholic Schools Week Celebration is from January 30th through February 5th. You're invited to attend our Annual School Open House, which will be on Sunday, January 30th, from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. The Open House is preceded by Mass at St. Bede's Church at 9:00 am. The Open House provides an opportunity for prospective students and their parents to tour our school, meet with teachers and staff, and visit with current students and parents. It is also a day for our current students and their families to celebrate and share with everyone what a great school we have! Please bring your friends and neighbors, particularly those who may be considering a Catholic education for their children or grandchildren. Estimadas familias de la escuela St. Bede,


¡Bienvenido a la segunda mitad del año escolar 2021-22! Espero que usted y sus hijos regresen a la escuela descansados y energizados por las vacaciones de Navidad. Si bien disfruté pasar tiempo libre con familiares y amigos, comer demasiado y ver un par de programas en Netflix,estoy ansioso porque nuestros estudiantes y personal regresen a la escuela. ¡El resto del año escolar promete ser genial!


Una de las cosas que hacen las escuelas después del tiempo libre es restablecer y volver a enseñar rutinas, expectativas y comportamientos. Mientras refrescamos y volvemos a enseñar a nuestros estudiantes, es un buen momento para recordarle algunos de los procedimientos de seguridad aquí en St. Bede School:


  • Por favor, tire lo más adelante posible cuando deje ó recoja a su(s) hijo(s).

  • Asegúrese de tener el número de su hijo con usted y mostrar en su parabrisas.

  • Su hijo debe salir o ingresar a su automóvil por el lado del pasajero del vehículo,no del lado del conductor. Ningún niño debe entrar en el área del estacionamiento para ingresar a un automóvil sin un padre o miembro del personal. Estos procedimientos son para la seguridad de su hijo.

  • Se espera que los estudiantes lleguen a las puertas de entrada antes de la campana de las 7:55 a.m. todos los días y estén en sus aulas a las 8:00 a.m. para estar listos para participar en las oraciones diarias de la mañana y las rutinas matutinas del aula. Si un niño llega tarde por cualquier motivo, el padre debe acompañarlo a la oficina y registrarlo.

  • Se solicita a un padre que se comunique con la Oficina De la Escuela antes de las 8:15 am para informar la ausencia de su estudiante. Se puede dejar un mensaje grabado o un correo electrónico en cualquier momento.


Para mitigar aún más la posible propagación de COVID, todas las escuelas dentro de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago deben suspender la operación de los puestos de concesión en eventos atléticos hasta nuevo aviso. Prohibiremos a los espectadores llevar cualquier comida o bebida al gimnasio hasta nuevo aviso.

2022/23 TUITION TAX CREDIT SCHOLARSHIPS


Please mark your calendars and spread the word; it is time to prepare for the 2022/23 Big Shoulders Fund Tuition Tax Credit Scholarship Application.


Year Five of the Tax Credit Scholarship Program, made possible by the Illinois Invest in Kids Act, is right around the corner. Big Shoulders Fund will open their Tax Credit Scholarship Application on January 13, 2022, beginning at 8:00 am.


St. Bede School families are invited to join one of the Big Shoulders Tax Credit Scholarship Information Zoom Sessions. These sessions will outline the application process, show a sample application, and help families prepare for steps one and two of the Big Shoulders Fund application. There will be separate Zoom links for English and Spanish.


Tax Credit Scholarship Information Zoom Sessions:

  • December 23 at 12:00 pm noon
  • January 6 at 7:00 pm
  • January 11, there will be a live Question and Answer Session at 7:00 pm


Families can practice the application during Big Shoulder’s Application Sneak Peak from December 17, 2021, through December 26, 2021. Big Shoulders will send families a special link when the Sample Application opens, and they can practice in preparation for application day.


Do not forget that everyone must reapply each year!

Audio Bible Still Available!

Your family has the opportunity to download a free Bible app. This app is a Christmas gift from the parish and the producers of Truth & Life Audio Bible. It is free of charge and limited to one Bible app per family.


The Truth & Life App is an audio Bible and study Bible. It is a celebrity-voiced "radio drama" of the entire revised standard version-Catholic Edition New Testament. Looking for School Pictures

The Yearbook Committee is looking for your pictures that can be put into the St. Bede Yearbook for this school year. If you have any pictures from events, games, etc., please email them to stbedeyearbook@yahoo.com. When you send in your pictures please make sure to include your student’s name, grade level, and what event the picture is for. Thanks so much!

Box Tops for Education

Remember to get your Box Tops in! We have raised $116.00 so far in the digital box tops app. Our goal is to raise $600.00 for the year for the school! We are doing a school-wide competition for Box Tops. If we can raise $600.00 as a school before the end of the school year, the PA will supply pizza for all of the students as a reward for meeting our goal! You can still turn in cut-out box tops, or scan them into the app. To use the app you need to download the “Box Tops for Education” App onto your phone. The app is free. Shop as you normally would, then use the app to scan your store receipt within 14 days of purchase. The app will identify the Box Tops products on your receipt and automatically credit your school’s earnings. The app is very user-friendly.

Parent Association News

Due to COVID protocols, the next Parent Association Meeting on Wednesday, January 12 at 6:30 pm will be held virtually. Please contact Nikki Brooks at brooks-nicole@att.net for a Zoom link. All are welcome to attend!


The PA Board will have 4 open positions for the next school year. Please see the information below with board position responsibilities. Board nominations will be at our next meeting on January 12th. Please plan on attending that meeting if you are interested in a board position. Elections will be done at our February meeting. Please consider being a part of the board! It is a very fun and rewarding position to help be a part of such a great school and community! If you have any questions, please contact Nikki Brooks at brooks-nicole@att.net

Duties of Parent Association Officers

The President shall preside at all meetings of the Association and closed sessions of the Board and conduct them in a formal order of business. The President shall appoint special committees, help appoint the chairpersons of all committees, and is an honorary member of all committees and events when needed and necessary. The President is responsible for supplying the school office with any updates regarding the Association to be printed in the school bulletin. The President is responsible for changes made to the Parent Association portion of the school website. The President is responsible for any e-mails to the Association. The President shall serve as an advisor to the Parent Association for one year following the President’s term of office.


The Vice-President shall perform the duties of the President in his/her absence, assume the duties of the office until the next annual election if the office of the President becomes vacant, and perform such other duties, as the President shall designate. The Vice-President will oversee the chairs of all events. The Vice-President will have the additional duty of communicating with the Athletic Board to ensure cohesion and collaboration between the two groups.


The Recording Secretary shall keep a written record of all meetings of this Association (both open membership meetings and closed sessions of the board), handle correspondence and send meeting notices. He/She shall provide a monthly report of these records at the monthly Association meetings. He/She is also responsible for having the minutes of each meeting prepared to be shared on the school website for members not in attendance within 7 days of receiving approval. He/ She is for all official correspondence including but not limited to family special occasions, illnesses and deaths, staff birthdays and event thank you cards (when required), and any other significant occasion. He/She shall perform such other duties as the President shall designate.


The Room Parent Secretary shall be responsible for all official correspondence to Room parents including the coordination of school events, fundraisers, and classroom parties. He/She shall perform such other duties as the President shall designate. Section 5. The Treasurer shall be the custodian of all funds including the receiving of all dues and other monies, sign all checks, and make disbursements only as directed upon the request of the Parent Association. The Treasurer will provide a monthly report, including an accounting of monies spent and received at each monthly Association meeting, and provide this monthly report to the business manager of the Our Lady of the Lakes Parish. The Treasurer will also provide information for an annual audit and upon request.


The Volunteer Coordinator shall be responsible for the coordination of all volunteer requests from other board members. He/She shall communicate with volunteers and other board members. He/She shall perform such other duties as the President shall designate.


The Board Liaison shall be responsible for attending both the Parent Association meetings and the School Board meetings each month. He/She shall share relevant information between the groups and serve as the communication liaison between both boards. He/She shall perform such other duties as the President shall designate.


The Parent Ambassador Coordinator shall be responsible for the coordination of all Parent Ambassador training and events. He/She shall work closely with the Marketing Coordinator of the school to ensure Parent Ambassadors have needed materials to give new and prospective families. He/She will be responsible to plan and attend Parent Ambassador events such as new family pizza night, monthly coffees, specific preschool, and kindergarten events, and “Sandlot” park dates over the summer. Section 9. The Board of the Association shall transact all routine business and necessary expenditures up to the sum of $100.00. The Board shall approve all event budgets and necessary expenditures of between $100.01 and $1,000.00. All expenditures over and above this amount shall be presented to the general membership for approval unless prior approval has been given by the general membership.

We currently have 3 board positions open for NEXT school year if you are looking to get involved with a super fun group that works together to run our awesome Athletic Program here at St. Bede. If you'd like to get your feet wet this year, you can start shadowing now in order to learn the ropes while we still have our current board intact!

OLL 50/50 Raffle Due Date Extended to 1/16/2022

Our Lady of the Lakes first 50/50 Raffle deadline date has been extended until January 16, 2022. There is still time to buy your tickets! They are being sold at the rectory or school - pick up yours today! All school families did receive raffle tickets before the Christmas break. If you need more, just let us know!


Turn in your tickets/money by January 14th. The price of the tickets is $10.00 each or 6 tickets for $50.00. The winning ticket will be drawn on January 16th after Mass.


FYI...50% of OLL winnings will be split equally between the Parish and School.

2022 Spring Sports Registration For St. Bede Students in Grades 4-8

Online registration is now OPEN for our Spring Sports! In the event that we do not obtain coaches or enough participants for a certain team, the registration payment will be refunded.


Online registration for our Spring Sports closes at Midnight, Friday, January 7.


Please note, it is important that we honor this deadline because teams are formed based on the number of registrants at this date. We will cancel teams by this date if there are not enough registrants. We will add an additional team if we have enough for 2. The conference is scheduled to meet on January 12 to create all of the game schedules, so it is imperative our teams are set by then. The $65 athletic fee will go up to $75 for any registrations that come in after the deadline.

2. Physical

Students MUST have a valid physical on file with the Athletic Association prior to being allowed to participate. Physicals need to be dated within 395 days of participation. Athletics does not have access to the student's school file at the office - a separate one must be submitted. The physical must be kept current and on file with the Athletic Association and is the sole responsibility of the parent to provide an updated copy prior to expiration.


If you are unable to upload the physical during the registration process, please email a copy to angelakshannon@gmail.com.


3. Fees

Our athletic fees are used to subsidize the cost of uniforms, supplies, equipment, referees, and tournament fees. The athletic fee for this season is $65.00 per sport, per child. The fee goes up to $75 for any registrations completed after the deadline. Payment will be accepted online with your registration via credit card or you can send in cash or a check made payable to “SBAA” to the school office in an envelope marked “Athletics.”


Boys’ Volleyball registration is also subject to a Concession/Gate/Scorekeeper Deposit Fee. Our Concession/Gate/Scorekeeper deposit fee is $300.00 per athlete. The success of our programs and our ability to maintain low registration fees depends on our ability to bring income into the program by hosting home games and tournaments. Therefore, for each individual sports season, we will communicate the number of shifts each parent has to cover in one of the following areas: gate, concessions, scoreboard, and scorebook. Parents who are unable to fulfill their required volunteer hours will be notified via email of the forfeiture of their deposit.


This deposit check should be dated January 1, 2022. If a family meets their volunteer requirements, the deposit check can roll over to a subsequent season or be returned if the athlete is not participating in any additional sports.


Any parent wishing to forgo the required hours can do so for a buyout of $200.00 per athlete per sport. This buyout is required to be communicated and paid within one week of the close of registration, with a current-dated check. This buyout can be completed online in our registration system, or with a check, pre-empted by an email, confirming the buyout to the athletic director.


We use signup.com to manage our volunteer hours for athletics (these hours do not count toward any required volunteer hours for school purposes, rather, they are in addition to those hours). Once the schedules are finalized, all parents will receive communication about their required shifts and a link to sign up.


Volleyball Coaches are exempt from any volunteer hours for the sport they are coaching only.


Certain exceptions due to extenuating circumstances may be made with board approval.


Students will not be issued a uniform until we have a valid physical on file, the boys’ volleyball volunteer deposit OR buyout fee is submitted, and all registration is paid (unless special arrangements have been made directly with the athletic director ahead of time).


Any parent interested in coaching a sport during the season should reach out to express interest. Coaches must be VIRTUS trained and complete all required background checks and protocols.
