HAPPY NEW YEAR from IAHPERD
Many things have happened since our last newsletter. You'll see below that IAHPERD has hired a new Executive Director. Make that 2 executive directors. Congratulations to Jan Grenko-Lehman and Jennifer Schnell on their co-ed roles. Please read below and meet our new ED's.
We have been making plans and prepping an agenda for our January 18, 2015, executive board meeting. See later in the newsletter for those details. I am thrilled that Bob Nutgrass has agreed to be our parliamentarian for the meeting. That should help the meeting run smooth and faster.
The deadline for nominating a fellow teacher for a T.O.Y. award is JANUARY 31, 2015. Please see the section below for more details on nominations. This is an exciting award to recognized outstanding teachers in our state.
Plans are also underway for travel to Central District Convention in Moorhead, MN, February 5-7, 2015. It's not too late to register! Lots of good sessions, speakers and networking will happen at that convention. President-Elect, Ben Robison and new ED Jennifer Schnell are also planning their trip to Washington DC, for Speak Out! Day February 10-11, 2015.
Then it's on to NATIONAL CONVENTION in Seattle, Washington from March 17-21, 2015. As always, national convention is a week full of great sessions, meetings and to top it off, the delegate assembly on the final day. There is still plenty of time to register for this convention as well.
The tentative date for our legislative council meeting in April 12, 2015, in Oskaloosa.
There is lots of planning going on right now for our IOWA AHPERD JUNE 2015 convention. Please consider bringing, your golf clubs, bike, any disc golf equipment you have, swimming gear........... sounds like there is fun to be had!

SHAPE America National Convention
The national convention is on the west coast this year in Seattle. It is sure to be a fun-filled week! All states will be represented. Last year in St. Louis over 5,000 attendee's joined together for an amazing week.

THE BIG ONE -- Our pride and joy!
Our State Convention-
Oskaloosa is located in the Southeast part of Iowa. A town of around 11,000 people, will be bursting with fun in June.
It's will be a family friendly weekend so bring everyone! Swimming, bike trail, fishing, canoeing, golf, disc golf, shopping, food, and so much more await you and your family in Oskaloosa.

NEW CO-EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS SELECTED
Jan Grenko Lehman
Jan Grenko Lehman has been a physical education teacher for 25 years in the Iowa City Community School district, teaching both elementary and high school students. Jan has taught the past 15 years Grant Wood Elementary. In addition to teaching, Jan is the Physical Education Coordinator for the school district. In this role she oversees curriculum, assist in hiring and scheduling physical education staff, coordinates the district’s elementary track meet and is responsible for equipment orders at the elementary level.
Jan serves on several committees within the district such as the district Wellness committee, Blue Zone committee, and PBIS committee. She has helped her district receive 3 PEP grants and is in year 2 of the most current grant. Jan helped Grant Wood became a Fuel Up to Play 60 school this year and she attending the regional program advisor leadership council. Jan has been a member in IAHPERD since early 1990’s and a national member since 1996 and since 2000 has held a number of positions from vice president of physical education and sport; joint projects chair and currently works as the convention manager. In 2002 Jan was awarded the IAHPERD Distinguished Service award, named the 2004 IAHPERD Elementary Teacher of the Year and in 2012 received the Steve France Outstanding Service Award. In addition, Jan is the joint projects chair for Central District.
Outside of teaching, Jan has coached several sports and currently coaches ninth grade girls’ basketball. She has worked as a Drake Relays official the past 5 years and the scorer’s bench for Iowa volleyball the past 2 years.
Jan looks forward to assisting IAHPERD in restructuring the organization to align with Central District and SHAPEAmerica. Jennifer Schnell
Jennifer Schnell has been a physical education teacher for 16 years at Franklin Middle School in the Cedar Rapids Community School District. Currently, Jennifer is a district PLC leader and a member of the Standards-Based Grading committee. Within her building, she is a member of the Building Leadership team, along with being a team leader.
Jennifer has been a member of IAHPERD since 1999 and a national member since 2000. Currently within the organization, Jennifer is IAHPERD’s treasurer, while having served previously as membership chair and President. Jennifer was named the 2008 IAHPERD Middle School Teacher of the Year, the 2009 Central District Middle School Teacher of the Year and was one of five finalists for the 2009 National Middle School Teacher of the Year.
In addition, Jennifer has coached multiple sports for her school over the past 10 years. Currently, she coaches cross country, basketball and track for Franklin. Outside of school, Jennifer started up and organized her town’s 5K Run/Walk for 5 years, has taught Sunday School for the past nine years and coached several of her son’s teams.
Jennifer looks forward to continuing to work for IAHPERD in a different capacity. Most of all, she wants to continue to work with individuals in accomplishing activities that promote the health and physical activity of individuals in our state. T.O.Y Nominations (Teacher of the Year)
Every year at the IAHPERD convention professionals are honored for the contributions that have been made to their profession and the Iowans they teach and come in contact with. We have a membership filled with talented individuals that have not been acknowledged with an award. I know from experience that being an award winner changes your professional life in a very positive way. It gave me greater credibility among my peers and from administrators. It opened new doors to professional opportunities. I felt validated for all that I had already done and believed in.
Please nominate someone for an IAHPERD award!! Its easy....

If you are nominated, you will be notified by me and receive a packet of information requesting further information. It is a great honor to be nominated and to receive the award provides an educator with more opportunities for networking, recognition, and credibility.
Awards will be given at the State Convention in June 2015 so please submit your nominations no later than January 31, 2015.
