Palmer High School
Principal's Post
May is Blooming!
May is one of my favorite months in Alaska. There is a change in the season that can be a magical transformation. The landscape goes from our brown backdrop left behind by our long winter months, to a bright green canopy of leaves and green ground foliage. Enjoy watching this metamorphosis this week.
Dictionary.com’s description of Blooming- adjective., glowing, as with youthful vigor and freshness. How perfect is that in describing our Alaskan outdoors, and our graduating class of 2017 right now?. Test are complete, transcripts are checked twice and commencement ceremonies are set for Tuesday night in Palmer High School's gym at 7:00 p.m.
This is a Palmer High event that truly brings our community together. Family, friends, alumni, school board members, MSBSD administration, and senate and house representatives all gather to recognize and celebrate our graduates of 2017. Former governor Sean Parnell will deliver the keynote address. As always, it should be a warm and momentous occasion.
The seniors wrapped up classes last Tuesday. The remaining students and staff notice the loss of energy in the building now that seniors have left. There is a noticeably different feel in the building. The conversations with your student about using this time to focus on finishing the school year strong are worth the time. For many students, academics tend to wain in the last weeks of a long school year. A strong finish will keep students eligible for activities in the fall, and will help maintain the credit accumulation towards their graduation in the future. There are also good incentives in place for all students to earn their way out of PHARM when the fall semester starts, as well as incentives for juniors and seniors to earn off campus lunch privileges.
The last day of school is Friday, May 19th. There will be an alternative finals schedule the last week of school, with finals for students on Thursday and Friday, May 18th, and 19th. I know we are all looking forward to another long Alaskan summer that's just around the corner.
Proud to be your principal.
