Welcome Back to School

Dear Colleagues,

As I said at Convocation, "Welcome Back!" It's great to kick off the 2015-16 school year and work with all of you in our effort to provide our students with the best education possible. As I mentioned, our overall responsibility is teaching and learning. Our profession is about motivating our students to learn. But as we do that, we need to Connect, Learn, Collaborate in ways that go beyond our general understanding of those terms.

We should Connect with all students but assure that those students who are struggling with school, the subject, or something else, Connect with at least one staff member in our schools so they feel a sense of belonging in school. We can do this when we Connect with them in a way that encourages their interest in learning and school. Here is a link to the video I showed during Convocation about this topic. This is the full video, not the segment I showed.

We should develop educational environments where our students Learn even when they think they are not. We can do this by motivating our students to Learn and helping them understand that sometimes we crawl before we walk, walk before we run, or fail before we are successful. All of this is part of the learning process. Here is a link to the video I showed during Convocation. Again, this is the full video, not the segment I showed.

We should Collaborate beyond students working together on an assignment and make it part of the learning environment. We can do this by harnessing the power of educational technology so that our students can Collaborate with both our students and students around the world. We need to make collaboration part of the learning environment and our own educational environment with our colleagues in district, in the state, and around the world. Here is the full video I referenced in the segment I showed to you.

Finally, as I said to you, our profession continually asks more of educators. But what students need remains the same; a caring and dedicated staff member to help them Connect, Learn, Collaborate in our schools. We can do this... Welcome back to school and I look forward to a great year.

Sincerely,

Scott
