Placement Process for 2023-2024 (Incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade)
We have finalized mathematics recommendations for all rising middle school students and an email was sent to parents with information about math course placement. Please see the below link for a presentation on the process and the courses that we will be offering next year.
Summer Practice and Enrichment
We believe that it is absolutely essential for students to practice their mathematical skills over the summer. Please see our district summer assignment below as well as the additional links at the end of the newsletter.

IXL and iReady Online Instruction
For many of our middle school students using either IXL, iReady, or both, students will continue to have access to personalized practice for the majority of the summer (rosters start to switch over to the new school year in August). They should build on their progress with these tools to strengthen their individual skills.
KenKen Puzzles are a type of puzzle created by a Japanese math teacher named Tetsuya Miyamoto. They are similar to Sudoko but require more mathematical thinking and, with a varying range of difficulty, they can be fun for ages 5 to 100+. Sophie Kudler is a graduating Senior at Hall High School and she is a local expert and champion of KenKen puzzles. She has shared that these puzzles have helped to improve her math fluency and problem solving and she works with students and teachers to help them use the puzzles in this same way. Her YouTube channel is linked below.
All of our games have been carefully designed and tested to maximize learning and fun. We focus on number bonds - also called fact families - and use multiple representations to model numbers, ten frames, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, identifying and forming equations, money, fractions, measurement and conversions, composing and decomposing numbers, and more.
As a department, we are encouraging students to become more interested and aware of the many connections between the study of mathematics and computer science. At the high school level, we offer courses in computer science, but we also encourage students to learn more throughout their years about the importance and excitement of computer science. Check out some of the links below.
