First Grade is Fabulous!
April 2017, Room 109
Fundations and Grammar
We explored contractions; words that are a combination of two words and shortened. An example would be "can't," it is a combination of "can" and "not". The children were really excited to use apostrophes in their writing, it made them feel very grown up!
In Fundations, we spelled words with consonant blends. Blends are a collection of two or three different consonant sounds that are each heard when the word is produced. An example of this would be the word: vest. The /s/ and /t/ sounds are both heard, but they blend together. This is different from a digraph because the two letters make an entirely new sound, for example, the /th/ sound "them". You cannot hear the /t/ sound or the /h./ sound separately. Are you confused yet?! This is very tricky for First Graders, but we are really using are listening skills!

We continued our non-fiction unit this month and began to work on our Animal non-fiction books. The children had so much fun shopping around the classroom, looking for the perfect animal to write a book about. I had all of the animal packets laid out and they needed to pick ONE. Thank you so much for all of your help regarding the researching of your child's animal. This information is a very important resource for your child while they are composing their rough drafts. We really focused on adding an "author's voice" to our writing with this assignment. When your child eventually brings this book home, you may see some parts where he/she added some funny phrases like, "Wow, that's awesome!" That is their author's voice shining through! We also focused on using capital letters at the beginning of our sentences and punctuation at the ending of a sentence.
We continued meeting with our reading groups this month and worked on our Reader's Workshop centers. Some of our groups even started literature circles and are reading chapter books! It's VERY EXCITING!! We had a lot of fun working on St. Patrick's Day, Easter, and Spring based centers!
Here are some of the centers we completed this month!

- Easter Egg Compound Words
- The Easter Egg by Jan Brett, comprehension and egg designing center
- Signs of Spring Observation and Writing
We began our unit on Landforms and Map Skills this month. We kicked off the unit with a Prezi I created! I think the most popular landforms were the most extreme ones, especially volcanoes and the Grand Canyon! We created a landform dinosaur where we needed to label all of the hidden landforms that we found in the dinosaur. We also matched conditions for specific landforms and climates. To assess the class' knowledge of landforms, the children participated in a Kahoot! quiz, using the Kahoot! app. They really enjoyed identifying landforms and waterforms without even knowing that it was more like a quiz!
