5th Grade Newsletter
Friday, October 25th
Block 1 & 2: Students finished up their opinion piece on whether Christopher Columbus was a Hero or Villain. These turned out great!! I think the students really enjoyed voicing their opinions. Next week we are starting the novel, "Blood On the River Jamestown 1607" to go along with the study of colonial times in Social Studies. We will be looking at cause and effect and some other elements as we are reading.

*Please to remind your child to read each night in order to meet their reading log goal date. They are to be writing their goal date in their planner each day at school, and this info can also be found in the blue reading log folder. *Do not forget Words Their Way contract also.
Science: We are studying single-celled and multi-celled organisms right now. Soon, we will be studying the similarities of parents and their offspring. Key vocabulary: amoeba, bacteria, cell nuceus, microorganism, organelle, protist, cell, cell division, cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, microscope, multicellular, tissue, feature, female, gene, generation, inherit, life cycle, reproduce, trait, transfer.
Block 1 and 2 Math will continue with Unit 3: Read, write, and model whole and decimal numbers and compare and order decimal numbers. We will also be adding and subtracting decimal numbers.
Science: Focus will be on air masses and fronts. We will be exploring how weather can differ in different parts of the country. We will experiment with cold/warm fronts and how they affect our weather.
Science Vocabulary: air mass, front, cold front, warm front
Language Arts- We are going to take our comprehension assessment on Two Kettles early in the week, then begin a new leveled reading book.
Science- We will finish our unit on aquatic biomes and take the unit test either this Friday or early next week.
Math: On Monday we will combine the concept of measurement conversion and finding the area of complex figures. We will review unit 2 and take the test on Tuesday. Students will need to study and know the formulas for finding the area and perimeter of rectangles, squares, parallelograms and triangles. They will also need to know length conversion. We will begin unit 3 midweek. Many students have zeros for not completing Acc. Math. They will be allowed to make up two zeros between Tuesday and Thursday morning of next week. Please encourage your student to take advantage of this opportunity
Science: The class learned about air pressure and will continue to learn about global wind zones. We will finish up the unit and take the test the end of this week.
We will have our Halloween treat on Thursday. Please send in candy by Thursday morning so we can fill the treat bags. Many thanks to Mrs. Allison for agreeing to bring in cupcakes and drinks.
The end of the nine weeks is Thursday. All missed/late work needs to be turned in by Tuesday. We also need auction donations. We will not be able to have the auction if no one donates.

*Please sign planner nightly. Please sign your full name (no initials) and use a pen.
*Be sure to check your childs planner today and every Friday for a conduct grade for the week. Please sign and address any concerns with your child. Teachers will be checking for a parent signature on Monday.
*Tardies and Early Dismissals can affect Success Celebrations* Success Celebration Criteria: -Students cannot have an N or U in conduct in any class. -Students cannot have any office or bus referrals. -Students cannot have any unexcused absences. -Students cannot have more than 3 tardies to school. -Students cannot have more than 3 early dismissals from school.

This is not a requirement but if students and parents choose to participate certain guidelines must be followed to ensure safety and fun for everyone. The following will not be allowed:Face Paint, Masks, Fake Weapons, Costumes that are scary or have blood and gore If you have questions please feel free to call and speak to a school administrator.
