Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Myrtle Beach is a coastal city on the east coast of the United States in Horry County, South Carolina. It is situated on the center of a large and continuous stretch of beach known as the Grand Strand in northeastern South Carolina. Myrtle Beach is one of the major centers of tourism in the United States because of the city's warm subtropical climate and extensive beaches, attracting an estimated 14 million visitors each spring/summer/fall.
Geography
Technically a man-made island, Myrtle Beach has been separated from the continental United States since 1936 by the Intracoastal Waterway, forcing the city and area in general to develop within a small distance from the coast. In part due to this separation, the area directly west of Myrtle Beach across the waterway remained primarily rural, whereas its northern and southern ends were bordered by other developed tourist towns, North Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach. Since then, the inland portion of the Myrtle Beach area has developed dramatically and the beach itself is developing westward. Due to strong erosion and tropical cyclones along the Atlantic Ocean, the city is separated from its beach by large dunes populated with sea grasses, which stabilize the sandy soil underneath and act as a natural seawall against storm surge. In conjunction, the city has also renourished the beach's sands several times, with one instance almost immediately followed by the landfalls of hurricanes Hugo and Hazel, necessitating a second replenishment to fill in the quick loss of the first.
Climate
According to Köppen climate classification, Myrtle Beach has a humid subtropical climate or Cfa – typical of the Gulf and South Atlantic states. The city enjoys abundant sunshine year-round with more than 2800 hours annually. The summer season is long, hot, and humid in Myrtle Beach. Average daytime highs are from 83 to 91 °F (28 to 33 °C) and average night-time lows are near 70 °F (21 °C). The coastal location of Myrtle Beach mitigates summer heat somewhat compared to inland areas of South Carolina: Thus, while nearby Florence, SC averages 65 days annually with high temperatures of 90 °F or higher – Myrtle Beach averages only 21. The Bermuda High pumps in humidity from the tropical Atlantic toward Myrtle Beach, giving summers a near tropical feel in the city. The warm Atlantic Ocean reaches 80 °F or higher in the summer months off Myrtle Beach, making for warm and sultry summer nights. Summer thunderstorms are common in the hot season in Myrtle Beach, and the summer months from June through September have the most precipitation. In summer, thunderstorms normally build during the heat of the day – followed by brief and intense downpours. Myrtle Beach has mostly mild winters of short duration: Average daytime highs range from 57 to 61 °F (14 – 16 °C) and nighttime lows are in the 36 to 38 °F (2 – 3 °C) from December through February. Winter temperatures vary more than summer temperatures in Myrtle Beach: Some winters can see several cold days with highs only in the upper 40s F (7 – 9 °C), while other winter days can see highs in the upper 60s and low 70s F (19 – 23 °C). Myrtle Beach averages 33 days annually with frost. Snowfall is very rare in Myrtle Beach and this part of the state, although a few times every decade a trace of snow might fall. In February 2010, a rare 2.8 inches of snow fell in Myrtle Beach and most recently on February 16, 2013 after a rare storm mixing snow and rain with the snow falling after the rain. The Spring (March and April) and Fall (October and November) months are normally mild and sunny in Myrtle Beach, with high temperatures in the 60s and 70s. The beach season in Myrtle Beach normally runs from late April through late October. SST (Sea Surface Temperatures) are often in the lower 80's (26 – 28 °C) off South Carolina in summer and early fall.
Tourism
Hosting over 14 million visitors annually, The Grand Strand is home to an array of tourist attractions, and the area receives a large influx of visitors during all seasons. Myrtle Beach hosts a variety of special conventions, events, and musical concerts. The area's attractions include its beaches and many golf courses, as well as a number of amusement parks, an aquarium, Legends In Concert, an IMAX theater, retail developments and over 1,900 restaurants[6] including seafood restaurants, and a number of shopping complexes. The area also has dinner theaters, nightclubs, and many tourist shops. Myrtle Beach has an estimated 460 hotels, with many on the beachfront, and approximately 89,000 accommodation units in total. Also in the city is Myrtle Waves, one of the largest water parks on the eastern seaboard.
The Carolina Opry is another highly-acclaimed attraction, which features various musical, comedy, dance, and entertainment shows, including The Carolina Opry (variety show), Good Vibrations (best of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s), LIGHT—a Laser Extravaganza. During the holiday season, the venue hosts The Carolina Opry Christmas Special. It is currently housed in a 2,200 seat theater.
The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk opened in 2010 and has been recognized as the nation's #3 boardwalk by National Geographic[7] and one of the best US boardwalks by Travel + Leisure magazine.[8] Scheduled to open at the boardwalk in May, 2011 is The Myrtle Beach Skywheel, a 200-foot (61 m) observation wheel, similar to a ferris wheel, with glass gondolas that look over the Atlantic Ocean. This will be the first wheel of its kind in the U.S. Myrtle Beach State Park, established in 1935, has just under a mile of Grand Strand beach and is a prime location for swimming, hiking, biking, and fishing.

Surfside Beach celebrates 50 years
SURFSIDE BEACH — It was a night of reminiscing at the Surfside Beach Library, where the town kicked off a series of events to celebrate 50 years since its incorporation in 1964.
A ceremony Friday night was the first anniversary event of the year. The next event will be in May.
Current and former residents who helped the town develop since its incorporation on March 14, 1964 were honored and given a historical picture book designed by Stephanie Spratt, a former Horry-Georgetown Technical College student.
“Surfside Beach is a great place to live,” said Mayor Doug Samples. “It’s a great place to raise children. But, most of all its a great place to call home.”
Attendees of the ceremony all agreed with the mayor about their love for the town.
Henry Meeks, one of the town’s earliest police chiefs, was head of the department for 16 years starting in 1974. Meeks still lives in town, because “There ain’t no better place to live,” he said.
Meeks said the police department operated on a small budget during his tenure and had only five officers and two patrol cars. The staff has quadrupled since, with 21 full-time sworn officers including the chief, command staff, evidence custodian and detectives.
Rutilla Ford was born in Aynor and lived on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach for while before she and her husband moved to Surfside Beach. She said she told her husband they were either going to move to Aynor or set up a home in the woods. They ended up surrounded by woods on Sparrow Drive in Surfside Beach 58 years ago.
Ford, 78, said Friday that she hopes to live out her life in Surfside Beach, and wouldn’t know how to begin packing if she ever left, having only moved three times in her life.
Howard Barnard addressed the crowd during the ceremony Friday. He and his wife Connie purchased their home on the second row in from the beach in the 1980s while he was stationed at the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base for $115,000. Barnard said he remembers telling his wife they were wasting their money, but now wishes he had purchased more homes in Surfside Beach.
He said he was told when he first arrived in Myrtle Beach that once his toes got in the sand he could never look back.
“We found we never wanted to leave,” Barnard said. “And we were anxious to come back if we did.”

Nelson-Atkins Museum installs glass labyrinth
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has begun installing a triangular walk-in glass labyrinth that's scheduled to open to the public in May.
The work, called Glass Labyrinth, is by Kansas City native Robert Morris and weighs more than 400 tons. It's made up of dozens of of 7-foot-high, 1-inch-thick glass panels that will form a 50-by-50-by-50-foot glass triangle with a maze of interior glass walls, The Kansas City Star reported. Crews began installing sections Tuesday at the museum's outdoor Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park.
The work is scheduled to be open to the public May 22 during a celebration inaugurating a yearlong series of activities marking the Sculpture Park's 25th anniversary.
Other Morris works have included labyrinths over the years, from an 8-foot-high, gray-painted, wood version he created at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia in 1974 to a chain-link labyrinth in the courtyard of Sonnabend Gallery in New York.
"Within the 'labyrinth' a paradox is allowed: We lose ourselves to find ourselves," Morris has said in a statement.
Morris, born in Kansas City in 1931, is widely known for his use of industrial materials. Before moving to New York in 1959, Morris took art classes at the Nelson-Atkins and at the Kansas City Art Institute. He earned a master's in art history from Hunter College.
In 1992, another of his works, Bull Wall, a pair of 120-foot-long steel walls with cutouts of bulls, was installed at the American Royal.
Jan Schall, the Nelson-Atkins' curator of modern art, said the Morris labyrinth is a "true labyrinth," with one way in and the same way out.
"His interest in the labyrinth is about a sense of confinement and creating a bit of anxiety," she said.
The Nelson commissioned the Glass Labyrinth with funding from the Hall Family Foundation. Unlike a temporary Morris labyrinth in Brazil, the Nelson version will be permanent, which meant months of planning and testing for Steve Waterman, the museum's director of presentation.
"It looks like a big line floating up in the air," Waterman said. "It's quite powerful.”

Proposals to halt the use of the popular beach tents have been discussed and implemented along the Grand Strand’s beaches amid much debate following concerns that they pose a hazard for emergency response teams.
Monday’s vote was the final reading for the issue in North Myrtle Beach. Voting for the ban were: Mayor Marilyn Hatley; Nicole Fontana; Terry White; and Fred Coyne. Those against were: Bob Cavanaugh and Jay Baldwin. Hank Thomas was out of town and did not attend the meeting.
Under the new rule, shading devices other than umbrellas are prohibited during the summer season. The law defines an umbrella as having a collapsible “circular shade no greater than 9 feet in diameter.”
Myrtle Beach and Horry County are also in the process of enacting similar rules. In its current form, Horry County’s ordinance would bar the use of the tents year-round. Myrtle Beach must vote on the measure again and may amend theirs to match the county’s. The county’s rule must survive two more votes.

The 40-member choir recorded the video earlier this month, MLive.com and the Detroit Free Press reported. As of Wednesday morning, a version posted March 7 on YouTube had been viewed more than 460,000 times. And it's prompted requests for TV appearances.
The cellphone video was recorded by Edward Bone, whose daughter is among the choir's third to eighth grade students.
"Really, it was just me being proud of my daughter ... and wanting people to see what a good job they're doing," Bone said. "It's like the song says, happy. I'm happy to be a proud parent of one of the students."
Choir director Angela Kee said the video was made after a producer for NBC's "America's Got Talent" requested a recording. The students helped create the choreography and Kee said she's "tickled and pleased and amazed" by the positive response.
"I picked the song because it is a favorite of the children," she said. "It's catchy. It's easy to teach, and the lyrics are positive. It drives negativity out of your heart. "I can hear the children singing and whistling the song in the hallway after they've left class."
The video of the children singing the Oscar-nominated song from "Despicable Me 2" features 10-year-olds Samuel Pickens and Asia Newson as lead vocalists.
Samuel said that both the music and lyrics of "Happy" energize and inspire him.
"When I first heard that song, I really felt it. It says can't nobody bring you down, and I really feel that way, too," he said.
Maurice Morton, the CEO of the roughly 1,000-student charter school, hopes that the YouTube attention will aid fundraising efforts for the choir's planned May trip to Disney World, where it will perform.
"We're in awe, we're just amazed," Morton said of the feedback.
