Dr. Carol Dweck speaks about the importance of the word Yet as part of Growth Mindset.

Students, parents, and staff may become tired during this virtual learning. Students can believe they can't do something, or become discouraged regarding the results of an assessment. Dr. Dweck of Stanford University reminded attendees in a webinar recently how important the word "Yet" is when teaching and talking with students. If a student says, "I am not good at math," you should remind the student "yet, you are not good at it yet. If you do ___ you will get good at it." A student might say that they can't do something, and our job as educators is to instill in the students that they CAN do it, maybe just not YET. But here is how you can get there, and you will if you want to.

Teachers, please remember that the students need you more than ever, and your exemplary instruction more than ever. Most importantly, the students need their teacher to instill the Growth Mindset and use the word 'yet' to promote positive learning. If something is difficult, that doesn't mean you aren't good at it. The student needs to learn that by putting in the effort to get better and learn, the student can find that it isn't so difficult. If they can't do it, just remind the student "yet."
