Faculty Focus
Ms. Grothe
Q: How did you know you wanted to become an English teacher?
A: I enjoy reading, writing and even grammar. I like the vitality and energy of high schoolers and teaching them. So, combining two of my favorite things into a lifetime of service has been great.
Q: How long have you been teaching?
A: I have been both a high school principal and an English teacher for 32 years.
Q: What are some of your favorite memories while working at Sargent Central?
A: I enjoy giving real-life mini lectures to my students and hope that the seeds I sow will someday bloom.
Q: What are some things you look forward to in the next year?
A: I hope 2022 is a gentler, merrier year. I like the quote, "Your goodness is greatness."
Q: What are some fun facts about you?
A: Traveling is a passion of mine. I backpacked in Europe for a month and have been to 46 states. I can't wait to see the last four.
Mr. McAmis
Q: Why did you want to start teaching?
A: Originally, he wanted to be in a band, but two of his professors at Science School in Wahpeton steered him into the profession.
Q: Why did you want to teach music?
A: Like all other teachers, he wanted to share his love of the subject matter. He discovered music at a very young age and it's always been something he's been good at. It gave him a lot and he wanted to help students discover their passion for music.
Q: What is your favorite part of the year?
A: His favorite part of the year is contest preparation. Picking out new music, mixing and matching students for ensembles, challenging students individually, and getting ready for competition. Mostly, he likes getting the chance to work with students one on one and in small groups. Helping them with their personal musical goals while giving them opportunities to excel on their own.
Q: What do you enjoy most about the students?
A: He likes goofing around with students on downtime and seeing what their likes and dislikes are, getting to know their lives outside of school, giving them random trivia at lunch, and saying hi to the little kids in the hallway. He likes that in a small school, you can have close relationships with most students because you know them all. Sargent Central is full of good kids!
Q: What do you like to do for fun?
A: Mr. McAmis likes to golf and ride motorcycle mostly. He tried camping for the first time this summer. He also enjoys taking his dog Baxter on walks around town.

Mr. Askerooth
Q: What made you become a teacher?
A: I enjoy teaching people about science and seeing the light bulb light up when they finally understand.

I also try to make sure they get where they need to be for their practices and games.

Class Highlights
12th Grade
In Applied Communications, the seniors were assigned another challenge. They were given a dramatic speech assignment to perform in front of the class and to be graded by their peers. Some of the speeches recited were written by Maya Angelou, Poetri, Walt Whitman and many more. These speeches were meant to be three to five minutes long and the students had to make annotations on their speeches. Annotations are text, symbols or highlighted parts to a piece of writing. The intentions of an annotation are to help with expression, change of tone and emotion, as well as adding gestures.
11th Grade
The juniors have been working hard in all their classes in the past couple of months. In Chemistry, they have been studying about different types of atoms and how to draw them. They have also been learning about The Lewis Structure and how to draw them as well. In US History, they learned about the United States' involvement in World War I, the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt's the New Deal. In English, they have been working hard with entering into their literature unit for the year. They have been reading stories about history, Native Americans, and slavery.
10th Grade
In science, the sophomore class is learning about DNA and RNA. They must figure out how to use RNA and get codons. They are also learning about translation. The translation is just translating the genetic code into RNA. The sophomores have fun trying to get the codes and putting it all together. There are many different types of RNA, so it can be confusing. The sophomores are very confident they can figure it all out!
9th Grade
This past month the freshmen have been practicing sewing in FCS and working on making boats to hold as many pennies as possible in physical science.
8th Grade
Mateya Wolters
In 8th grade math, the students are learning how to do a couple of different techniques such as solving equations by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing equations. They are also learning equations with two variables, slope and y-intercept, and graphing equations using slope-intercept form. I asked the new math teacher Mr. Isakson about why he likes teaching the 8th grade and he replied with, “They are great to work with, and I enjoy seeing them every day”. He also claims that they are smart students.7th Grade
By Mya Swanson
The 7th graders are learning about classification and organizing organisms in science. They’re going on to study what organisms exist in our world and the different groups. The 7th graders are also learning how to cook. They are going to start by baking chocolate chip cookies!
Holiday Lights
The seniors took time out of their day to put up blue and white lights up outside in the front yard of the school. "It was so much fun, we all had a blast and worked well together." - Cheyenne Treat

Dress-up Days
By Gabi Christianson
Mrs. Peterson and Mrs. Stenvold headed up the dress-up days every week in the month of December. They thought of fun holiday ideas that would be easy so everyone can participate. They also thought about their students' favorite Christmas movies. I just asked them why it would be important for them to have those days. They said it is fun to get in the holiday spirit. The kids have a lot of fun doing them too!
Expo Fair
The Expo Fair this year was in Fargo and the freshman and sophomore students attended it on December 2. They were able to look at many different job opportunities and have some hands-on experience. It is always a good idea to look and see what future job may await you and start thinking about the many different opportunities.
Caroling
In the spirit of the holidays, the 7-12th grade choir classes went to spread holiday cheer to some of our local businesses. They went up and down main street to the courthouse and small businesses, then they visited the nursing home across the street. With the pandemic still going on, the residents won't all be able to see their families for every holiday and the choir brought some holiday cheer.
Book Reviews
The Selection Series
Pages: 328
AR points: 12
Book level: 4.7
This selection is my favorite book series! There is action and romance all tied into one series. It is set in a place and time where there are kings, queens, and a whole different society than we have, which makes it so much fun to read and learn about the things they did differently throughout their world.
The Selection Book Summary By: Abigail Erickson
For thirty-five girls, the selection is their chance of a lifetime. Their chance to escape the life that has been set laid out for them since birth. Instead, to be swept up in a world filled with glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the gorgeous Prince Maxon's heart.
For America Singer, being selected is her worst nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. It means leaving her home to enter a huge competition for a crown she doesn't necessarily want. It means living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. She starts to question all the plans that she's made for herself and realizes that the life she thinks she has always wanted may not be the same to a future she has never imagined.

Allevity
On December 17th, the 5-12 kids went to the Allevity Entertainment Center in Aberdeen, South Dakota. They got this reward because they reached the AR goals set by Mr. Warcken for the 2020-2021 school year. Allevity is a big arcade that includes bumper cars, mini bowling, and laser tag. The arcade includes games like Zombie Snatcher, a Minecraft story mode machine, skeet ball, and virtual bowling. Some of the games were also claw machines that included one for giant bouncy balls, one for extra tickets, and one for candy. A lot of the kids came home with a giant ball. Allevity also includes a prize counter for tickets won at the prize center. Tickets were earned by playing arcade games. Each kid got $12 on a rechargeable card that slides into the arcade machines and allows you to play the games. Laser tag, bumper cars, mini bowling, and the interactive climbing wall did not cost any money and was free for the entire time we were there. We left at 8:00 am and returned by 2:20 pm. It took a little longer to get there and back because it started snowing and it was windy. Everyone came home safely and at the end of the day, everyone returned home for a nice soothing two-week Christmas break.
