This Week in AVID
This Week in AVID September 30, 2019
We have been facilitating AVID Learning Modules around the district and have been amazed at how many teachers are using WICOR strategies to engage all students. It was also brought to our attention that some teachers are wanting these tools but need a little reminder. We often need a new tool in our belt this time of year and the routine has set in. HERE is a list of some strategies that foster engagement. Try one this week!

During the month of September we have looked at multiple ways to "be safe". Today we will take a look at how to be safe when it comes to your health.
Vaping has become very popular among middle school students. Students are vaping at home, on the school bus, and in school bathrooms. Vape pen manufacturers want you to think that vaping isn't harmful to your health; but if you look at the chemicals you are putting into your body when you vape, you will realize vape pens are very bad for your health. Vaping is also very addictive because vape pens contain nicotine.

If you know someone who is vaping, encourage them to speak to an adult or a counselor to get help.

Never underestimate the power of a good classroom-greeting routine.
From the Educational Leadership September 2019 magazine (page 10) an article highlighting proactive classroom management strategies in regards to teachers new and experienced:
"In a recent study, five middle school math and science teachers whose classes had high rates of disruptive and off-task behaviors were given training and follow-up support on a specific approach for greeting students at their classroom door. The approach entailed:
- positively connecting with each student (fist bumps and creative handshakes allowed);
- providing "pre-corrective statements" to remind students of expected behaviors as they transition to the classroom;
- privately offering guidance and encouragement to students who struggled with behavior issues the previous day; and
- praising individual students' actions to reinforce desired behaviors."
