Man of La Mancha Synopsis

While sitting in a 16th-century dungeon awaiting trial by the Spanish Inquisition, author Miguel de Cervantes is brought before a kangaroo court of his fellow prisoners. As his defense, Cervantes attempts to prove his merit through a reenactment of one of his manuscripts, enlisting his fellow prisoners as characters in his story. Together, they tell the tale of the aged Alonso Quijana who, believing himself a knight-errant and renaming himself Don Quixote, embarks on an obsessive quest to attain an impossible dream. As Quixote and his trusty squire Sancho Panza take to the road in search of the good and innocent in a world filled with only darkness and despair, the prisoners are – at least for a moment – transformed. The original 1965 Broadway production of Man of La Mancha ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
