September 7, 2020
Dear Village Oaks Families,
Our teachers were thrilled to meet so many of their students during our Virtual Open House. They truly enjoyed the experience and are ready to start the year! I realize things will be a bit different with our virtual learning and social distancing this year, but I look forward to continuing to connect with as many parents as possible to discover how I can be of service to you as your principal. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you need anything.
This year we have some new additions to our VO family. To help parents learn more about the wonderful professionals in our building I will provide information on our new staff members throughout the year in my weekly newsletter.
A few important updates:
- For Hybrid Learners there will be no at-home learning given on Tuesday, September 8. The A group's first day of school is Wednesday, September 9.
Questions about our CARE program (after/before school daycare) can be directed to Holly Bengle. Holly can be reached at email@example.com or (248) 449-1307.
We are still in the process of determining the dates for of our Curriculum Nights. Please stay tuned for additional information.
Please enjoy the Welcome Back Message below from Dr. Matthews!
VO FAQ's About Return To School 2020-2021
We encourage all parents to please review the ROAR plan to examine our district's approach to returning to school. ROAR Plan: https://www.novi.k12.mi.us/academics/roar-plan
Below are some VO specific answers to frequently asked questions:
Q-If I wasn't able to pick up my child's device last week, will there be another date?
A- Yes, as soon as the date and location are determined a district communication will be shared with all families.
Q-How will VO staff keep students safe during student drop off and pick up times?
A- During drop off times and pick up times students and parents will be required to wear their masks. We will also have staff members outside of the building reminding parents and students to socially distance.
Q-Will parents of virtual students have an opportunity to pick up school materials for their children (workbooks, instruments, etc.)?
A- Yes, sometime in September parents will be able to collect materials for their children who are doing virtual learning. Details coming soon.
Q-What doors will students (car riders and walkers) use to enter and exit the building?
A- Kindergarten and first grade students will use the Kindergarten entrance in our kindergarten hallway (door will be labeled K & 1). 2nd-4th grade students will use our main entrance.
Q- Will I be able to walk my child into the building in the morning?
A- No, unless your child is arriving after 9:08 am start time. If your child is late to school you may report directly to the office to sign your child in. Due to safety measures, parents will not be permitted to walk their child to their classroom.
Q- For the 2020-21 school year will there be a stronger medical professional presence at VO to support medical related questions, concerns, and issues?
A- Yes, each day we will have a district nurse visit our building and stay for a period of time for support and guidance. (Pictured below, NCSD Nurses: Reagan Huzella, Cathy Farris, and Danielle Stacer.)
More FAQ's will be answered throughout the opening weeks of school!

VOICE Bottle Return Update
A special thank you to all of the parents who donated their time this summer helping us return pop cans. It is because of your efforts we were able to raise $11,000 for our VOICE budget to help recoup funds lost due to the cancellation of Spring Fling!
Volunteer and Donation Opportunities
One of the things that makes our building so special is our diverse student population--we have families in our community who come from all over the world! To celebrate our global diversity we have hung flags in our cafeteria that represent many of the countries of our VO families. As a gift from VO retirees we were given flags of the following countries: Israel, India, United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Nigeria, South Korea, China, and USA. Thank you to our parents who have also donated the following flags: Poland, Singapore, Japan, Germany, Finland, Ireland, Nepal, Greece, Pakistan, Uruguay, Ecuador, Portugal, Spain, Central African Republic, South Africa, Wales, Iceland, Australia, Armenia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Russia, Scotland and Yemen. If you would like to purchase a flag of your country of origin or to represent one of the many nationalities of our school please visit Amazon and search for an ANLEY 3x5 flag: VO Flags
Before purchasing and donating the flag to our school’s collection please contact me or one of our secretaries with the flag information so we can make sure that another family has not already ordered the same flag.
Mrs. Cudnohufsky--help needed!
Our music teacher, Mrs. Cudnohufsky, has a volunteer opportunity for parents!
In an effort to engage with our virtual students, she is hoping to send some instrumental items home to them, but she needs help organizing the project and sorting items in to bags to send home ASAP.
Can you help out?
This year NCSD elementary schools will continue our partnership with Playworks to enhance the learning experiences for students throughout the district. Playworks is the leading nonprofit in Michigan and nationally using play to transform schools. A Playworks recess creates a place for every kid on the playground to feel included, be active, and build valuable social and emotional skills. Please click on the link below and read the attached Playworks article to learn more about our partnership!
Despite the current challenges Playworks is still committed to providing safe and healthy play for every child everyday. We see the work that you are doing to continue to educate our students and we are committed to providing the same SEL learning opportunities we have delivered in your classrooms all year. #PlayworksAtHome is a resource to help families and educators in a variety of formats so students can continue to #PlayAtHome.
Parent Pick-up/Parking & Bus Stop Expectations
As you pick-up and drop off your children please be mindful of the following:
- All adults and students are expected to wear their masks during pick up and drop off times.
- Please socially distance yourself from others as you wait to drop off or pick up your child from school.
- Do not park in front of our neighbors' driveways or mailboxes.
- Park in our parking lot and keep your pet in your car.
- For the safety of our students do not walk your children through our bus loop as students are loading/exiting our busses.
- Stay in your car as you drive through our car loop.
- Please do not drop off children before 8:55am. We do not have any supervision outside prior to this time.
- If you arrive late, please walk your child into the office and sign them in. Whenever someone enters the building they will be asked to complete a Covid Health Screener Form.
We ask that you remind your children that VO expectations/rules apply at our bus stops. We expect all of our students to be on their best behavior as they wait for their bus. We appreciate your help.
Thank you for your support!
