Emmanuel Catholic College
College Newsletter - Term One Week 7 - 16 March 2018
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Students and College Community,
Last year I announced that Mrs Lee-Anne Marroccoli was nominated for a National Excellence in Teaching Award by one of our Year 12 parents from 2017. I have just heard the wonderful news that that Lee-Anne will join another 11 fine educators from across Australia in receiving this prestigious national award.
In nominating Lee-Anne, our Year 12 parent wrote, “Her pastoral care is exceptional. She has the ability to recognise when someone is not in a good headspace and goes out of her way to help them. My son found school life difficult and told me that he doesn’t know how he would have survived Years' 11 and 12 without her.”
Selected from around 1450 nominations in 2017, the 12 national award recipients have been honoured for their inspiring and innovative contribution to teaching. Now in its 23rd year, the ASG NEiTA awards have contributed more than $1 million in professional development grants to outstanding teachers in Australia and New Zealand.
This is an exceptional award and I congratulate Lee-Anne on her outstanding contribution to education and on receiving this well-deserved award.
Year 11 & 12 students receive their Interim Reports today. This summary of student’s academic performance during the first half of Term One is an excellent indicator to how students are progressing towards their academic goals. It is important that parents attend the Parent, Teacher, Student Interviews scheduled on Monday 26 March to discuss their child’s progress in more detail with their relevant subject teachers.
Earlier this week we had a large crowd at our first College Tour for the year. It is affirming to know that so many people in the locality of Cockburn are looking to Emmanuel Catholic College as the school to have their children educated. My thanks to Mrs Kelly Lister and Mr Peter Sackett for their organization of the Tour, and to the many staff and students who assisted on the afternoon.
Today our students participated in the ACC D Division Interschool Swimming Carnival. All students participated exceptionally well and the College had a number of great performances which will be acknowledged next week. My congratulations to Asha Holmsen and Daniel Khan who were selected as Swimming Captains for 2018 and to all the other students involved. My thanks also to Mr Jarrod Parry and Amy Petersen as coach, and other staff for their energy and commitment to the Swimming Team.
Our Year 7 students have their House Camp next week. Francis, Frassati & Lisieux Houses have their camp on Monday to Wednesday and MacKillop, More & Teresa House have their camp on Wednesday to Friday. I wish all involved well.
God Bless,
Mr Leo Di Gregorio - Principal

I would like to share with you a parable I recently heard.
There once was a boy who wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed some sandwiches and something to drink and started his journey. When he had gone about three blocks he met an old woman who was sitting on a park bench.
He sat down beside her and because she looked hungry, he opened his bag and offered her a sandwich. She gratefully accepted it and smiled at him. Her smile was so pretty, he wanted to see it again so offered her a drink. Again, she accepted it and smiled. The boy was delighted. They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling but never said a word. When it was time for the boy to go he gave the woman a hug. She gave him the biggest smile ever. Arriving home, his mother could see how happy he was and asked him why. He replied, "I had lunch with God." Before his mother could respond, he added "You know what? She has the most beautiful smile ever!"
Meanwhile, the old woman also arrived home. Her face was radiant, and her son asked why she looked so happy. "I had lunch with God" she replied, "You know, he's much younger than I expected!" No need for any comment from me. I guess friendliness and a smile can bring God out to anyone.

YEAR 9 BUSHRANGER CAMP
Last week we went on our Marine Camp to Busselton and Bunbury. The first day we took the long 2km train ride on the Busselton Jetty to the aquarium. At the aquarium, we were given a tour and went down below the water line to investigate the marine life. The view of the fish was surreal and whilst we there we observed a diver putting in electrical cables. After taking the train back we drove to Bunbury to set up the tents and campsite and cooked the evening meal.
Next morning, we had a presentation on the geomorphology of the Bunbury coastline, we learnt that like many areas along our coastline the Koombana Bay area is under threat from sea rise. Mr Spencer, from the local government, explained to us the history of the formation of Koombana Bay and what was being done to stop the loss of the beaches. He described that it is a constant battle because the Bunbury townsite is built on a low basalt plain, with the currents, wind and weather impacting on the erosion and deposition of the sands in the bay. Added to this is the building of the large shipping port and of course, there is an impact on the marine life.
In the afternoon we were given presentations by research students from Murdoch University on their areas of expertise which ranged from sea turtles to whales, manta and stingrays and dolphins. Koombana Bay is one of three main breeding areas for bottlenose dolphins where dolphin socialisation is monitored every day. We headed out in groups on a large research boat where we could observe the bottlenose dolphins naturally. We saw dolphins playing and hunting fish. On Friday morning we had a presentation on the physiology of Dolphins and before we knew it we were on our way back to the College.
Thanks to Mr Prigg, Miss Deacon, Miss Knight and Miss Hynes for making the camp possible and helping us to understand how important sustainability of our marine life is.

MENTOR MORNING TEA
As a continuation of our Mentor Program that was initiated in 2006, teachers have again been invited to act as Mentors to our Year 12 university-bound (ATAR) and Certificate IV students to “take them under their wing.” Each Mentor has been allocated a small number of students.
On Tuesday Morning at Recess, we held our Morning Tea to Launch our Mentoring Program for 2018. This was a great opportunity for the Year 12’s involved to start their initial conversations with their Mentors. Mentors and Mentees will meet during the year to talk about their progress, worries and general issues which may occur during this final year of schooling.
Mrs Deborah Barraclough - Head of Year 12

_____________________________________________________This year’s College Production is the highly anticipated Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, which our students will be presenting to the community on 20 and 21 July. In this charming and family-friendly musical, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado's path as it rips through their home in Kansas, and are whisked to the magical land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes on her journey to find the Wizard of Oz, whom everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends, Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion, their dream of getting a brain, a heart and some courage.
This enchanting musical shows the importance of loyalty, friendship, bravery and persistence, whilst giving the all-important message: there’s no place like home. It is a wonderful and fitting musical production for our students at Emmanuel to get involved in, and an exciting opportunity to display the amazing talent we have here at Emmanuel. Watch this space for ticketing information, coming in Term Two!
Miss Sara Middleton - Teacher
