Message From Principal Appiah-McNulty:
Dear Senator Family,
October is here! “October is crisp days and cool nights, a time to curl up around the dancing flames and sink into a good book.” — John Sinor
The year is certainly underway and the end of the first quarter is quickly approaching. First quarter ends on October 13, 2021. RMS Team appreciated all of the families that were able to attend the conferences held on September 15th. Students have one full week to work very hard and catch up on assignments to pull grades up. We will plan on having an Honors Assembly each month by grade levels to celebrate students making the Honor Roll. This year, we will not be doing A and B Honor Roll, but focus on GPA (grade point average). Students with a GPA from a 3.0-4.0 will be invited to the special celebrations. This allows students who may get a C in a class along with mainly A’s and B’s to still have an opportunity to be honored. This is also a great way to help students understand the transition to high school and why their GPAs are important. The next Honors Assembly will be held on Tuesday, October 26th from 8:30-9:30am. This will be for the students, but we will ensure that our end of the year honors assemblies allow families to be here and celebrate with their students.
As we have returned fully back to school, there are two areas that we would like to focus on to support students. Attendance and school discipline are both essential components of maintaining a high functioning school. In looking at our data, we currently have a daily average attendance of 89% (6th grade 90%, 7th grade 89%, and 8th grade 88%). Our school-wide attendance goal is 95% or higher. School attendance is an important factor in student achievement (if they are not here, they will not receive instruction). We ask that our families continue to keep the line of communication open in regards to students needing attendance support. We are here to help and if parents are aware of any errors in regards to accurate attendance information, please contact Ms. Rosalyn Gilbert (Attendance Clerk) rgilbert9221@pcssd.org to support you with corrections.
Let’s chat about school discipline… Overall, we have a high percentage of our Senators who are doing great. The on-going pandemic has had an impact on our students. As students have come back, we have had to revisit what appropriate behaviors mean and also remind students of our Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) Expectations. Please review the school-wide matrix along with our Student Policies and Procedures Manual below. This will greatly align our school and home partnership as we help our Senators navigate our full return back to face to face instruction.
Additionally, we will be opening our PBIS School Store starting October 15th. This store allows RMS staff to provide school bucks to students for making positive choices in regards to behavior, academics or just being caught doing great things. They are able to spend the bucks in our school store to purchase items such as school gear, lanyards, water bottles, school supplies, fidgets, ear-buds, and many more items. If there are any families or businesses that would love to support our PBIS school initiative, please let us know. We do understand that our students should make positive choices and we want it to become intrinsic. However, we also think it is important for students to be rewarded when they continue to build a positive culture by doing great things at RMS. We are thankful for any support given to make our school store an outstanding experience for our Senators. Please email Ms. Patricia Davis pdavis9073@pcssd.org (RMS Bookkeeper) to donate items to the school store.
Again, we are thankful for our amazing school community and appreciate the parental support received. Contact our school team should you have any questions or need support. Let’s have a wonderful month of October.
