Health Office Happenings: Mid-Year Reminders
Thank you for taking time to review this article as we work together to keep everyone healthy and safe!
When to Keep Your Child Home
We are in the midst of the cold and flu season. Deciding when to keep your child home is not always an easy decision. When a child is truly sick, it is important they stay home in the care of an adult to get well and to limit the spread of germs at school. Illnesses can spread quickly in a classroom and sending a sick child to school puts other students and staff at risk for illness. Below are some guidelines to help you decide when to keep your child home from school.
Skin rash from an unidentified cause that has not been evaluated by a physician. Please note that open sores should be covered until healed or evaluated by a physician.
Oral temperature of 100o F or greater. A student with such a fever should remain home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal without the aid of fever-reducing medication.
Experiencing nausea, diarrhea, and/or vomiting. Students should remain home until symptom-free for 24 hours without the use of medication.
Complaining of severe, persistent pain.
Showing signs of an upper respiratory infection (cold symptoms) or any other illness serious enough to interfere with the student’s ability to learn.
Signs of conjunctivitis (“pink eye”) present with symptoms such as secretions from one or both eyes, itching, and crusts on eyelids.
Please call the attendance line (630-682-2086) to notify the school when your child is staying home. When reporting an absence, please indicate the reason for the absence. If due to illness or a communicable disease, please report symptoms including whether your child has a fever, cough, or sore throat or report the diagnosis.
If you are not sure whether to send your child to school, you may call the school nurse for consultation. If you’re still in doubt, call or visit your physician.
Handwashing
During this period of increased illness it is an ideal time to review with your child the importance of handwashing, proper handwashing and when to wash their hands. Keeping hands away from their face also reduces the chance of illness.
Clothing Donations
The Health Office is seeking donations of gently used pants, especially sweatpants, for students who occasionally need a change of clothes. The kindergarten/1st grade age group is presently in low supply.
Injuries/Recess
If your child has an injury which keeps them out of PE class, please make sure to send the doctor’s note to the Health Office. Be aware that if your child is not able to participate in PE class, they are also unable to participate in recess.
Keep the Box Tops coming!
Thank you to everyone who has sent in Box Tops for Education! We submitted $483.60 worth of Box Tops for the Nov. 1 submission deadline. Please keep sending them in (labeled with your child's name and teacher's name), as we will submit again in the spring.
We are keeping track of the number of Box Tops submitted by each class, and the winning class will receive a special prize toward the end of the school year. Currently 2K is in 1st place, followed by 5M in 2nd and 3F in 3rd!
Please keep sending Box Tops in and thanks for your support!
